3G option coming to MacBook Pros?
Not that any of this should be a surprise, but AppleInsider says that Apple may offer a "3G wireless" option on future notebooks. Citing an "unproven but seemingly credible source," the venerable rumor mongering site says that Apple has asked for a PCI Express mini-card adapter to integrate a WWAN module inside the display lid of some future Apple laptop. While the source would not state which 3G technology would be used or which laptop(s) would benefit, HSDPA in a MacBook Pro is certainly the most likely combination what with Apple's new found love-in with AT&T. Best part? Bluetooth back to your WWAN-enabled MacBook and you've got the world's first 3G iPhone.

What a sexy momma! I must have one - the only thing that stands in my way is the Missus, who doesn't understand technology! If only she had a pacemaker, then I'd buy her an ipod......

Seems like time after time Apple fails to have any sort of cutting edge technology. While real vendors like Asus, Dell, Toshiba, etc are currently rolling out technology like LED backlight, it's only in Apple's rumor mill. At some point you have to ask yourself whether you want current gen technology or to buy into a cult.
Rodeo @ May 14th 2007 11:40AM
...but it will take Apple to get it done RIGHT!
trainwrecka @ May 14th 2007 11:45AM
a cult? give me a break. apple makes a solid product that stands up to security issues without the need for security software. the products look good and apple software is top notch. not to mention OSX. people call it a cult because once you go mac - you never go back. people are only loyal because apple consistently puts out great products.

What?
Darnell @ May 14th 2007 11:25AM
Ha. Ha. Didn't take long for the bashing to start. So Apple isn't a real vendor it's a cult? Get a life man. You should be cheering on Dell and Toshiba not posting crap on the Apple news item.

Interesting, so built-in quadband GSM + HSDPA.
So far as I know there are no Quadband HSDPA modules yet (2100 for global, 850 for US/Japan/Australia, 1900 and 1700 for north america)

Wow, 7of7
Because of that comment, I'm going to go sell my MBP and get a Dell! Thanks for your help...
...NOT!
Keep it on topic please. If you want to bash a company, Engadget is not the place to do it ok?
Rodeo @ May 14th 2007 11:41AM
That's great...now make a 13 inch MB Pro or put it in a MacBook as well. Not everyone likes to carry around a TV tray!
dax2000 @ May 14th 2007 12:03PM
Just get an EVDO Rev A ExpressCard for Sprint. I have one in my MBP, it's SMOKING FAST

Yeh, the source was myself and though I may be credible from a certain point of view it was more of an educated guess. If you throw enough darts eventually you'll hit the bullseye.
Michael @ May 14th 2007 1:37PM
Wow, it's fantastic~~

Does anyone find it a little weird that they'd put 3G into a Macbook Pro but not into the iPhone, considering 3G is a lot more standard for phones I think.
memo @ May 14th 2007 3:21PM
Its a disgrace that the iPhone doesnt have 3G to begin with! I already have 3.5G (HSDPA) on my Macbook Pro via bluetooth and MDA Vario II WHICH I GOT FOR FREE WITH 18MONTH CONTRACT. NOT $500 WITH 2 YEAR CONTRACT!!
snp @ May 14th 2007 4:14PM

jared @ May 14th 2007 4:49PM
It's _rumored_ that Apple _may_ put 3G in a future laptop? Stop the f'ing presses...
Froggy @ May 14th 2007 5:11PM
come on now, et tu Engadget?!... give the damn thing a rest, they will not. Ever. Period. They might put 4G or 5G in future models, but 3G is dead in the US. Deal with it!

Well I agree w/you, but if the iPhone has been in the planning as long as they say it's been, 3G networks were only in the planning stages and are only now getting rolled out. I'm glad that I'm in a 3G area, don't get me wrong, but it's easier to integrate the Edge network into a phone being planned rather than a 3G which isn't truly available to everyone yet.
Now that it's out however, it shouldn't take too long to integrate it (and since other laptop makers have put it in their higher end models, why not Mac)... I fully believe 3G will get into the iPhone, just not in the first model since it takes so long to get FCC approval on such a device.

Okay...
AlphaTeam @ Aug 25th 2008 11:12AM
I'll pass. I have 2 laptops and I don't the same one all the time and this would be really inconvenient.
