We still don't have the magic numbers (launch date and price) on that most impressive new Dell XPS m1330, but we did at least secure some more eye candy for you. A couple more shots after the break.
Unfortunately, yes. We got tired of people using our scoops without providing credit (see: what happened when I published the first known shot of the Zune way back last July: http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/10/microsofts-argo-xbox-wireless-portable-media-player/). If everyone where honest about where they found their material then it wouldn't be necessary.
Tid: no need for such dramatic effects. Do you run a website/ blog? Do you realize everyone is stealing content? So if they got the pictures first, they wanna make sure that they at least get a trackback.
Hah! I believe the phrasa you're looking for is "many Bothans died to bring us this information" ;)
Yes, the watermarks are annoying... They look to be pre-release official Dell press photos, but I guess if Engadget wants to claim to be the source (after many, many blogs rehash the photos), they have the right to do so, if it's some kind of "exclusive". Don't worry... The real photos will be out soon and they'll be bigger and shinier sans watermark, so curb your patience a wee bit longer.
Yeah, I understand Ryan. My thinking is just that it would be a bigger deal if you actually designed the laptop or something. But it's just a picture, and it'll get out no matter what.
What's with the track pad slightly to the left. I can see they were going for the central alignment with the space bar, but that would drive me nuts. I like the whole brushed metal look though... and the car.
The track pad is slightly to the left because there is an extra column of keys (multimedia? function? who knows?) to the right of your normal keyboard layout.
Centering the pad to the primary keyboard area is more of a priority than centering it on the whole keyboard or width of the notebook, which would slip it askew your hands' natural resting/typing positions.
Oh, I get it. I think I would feel a little awkward positioning my hands off to the left, but I guess it's a bit of an aquired taste. Anyway, it's still sexy none the less.
Yesterday, immediately after Engadget posted the details they had from a marketing promotion about the Dell XPS m1330, I was only able to find three links via Google using "Dell XPS m1330". Only several more sites using just "Dell m1330" and more using m1330. "None of links I found had anything about the new Dell XPS m1330".
Earlier this morning, there were quite a few sites that now had information on the m1330. A few gave acknowledgement to Engadget, most did not. What I didn't see were any images.
it doesn't need to change, or need embelishment. it is beautiful in its minimal simplicity, driven by functional needs. you don't end up with a mashup of different colored periphs, monitors, etc, because they actually have design guidelines and standards.
Why does everyone compare Dell laptops to MacBooks? MacBooks are just pretend computers for people who cant use a real computer (and do nothing productive).
This Dell XPS M1330 looks awesome. Kudos to Dell for listening to its customers. I think the 12in screen on the M1210 is too small so i'll be upgrading on June 26 as soon as I can.
Does the watermark thing mean that the 99% of pictures that AREN'T watermarked on Engadget, encompassing thousands upon thousands of photos, have all been leeched and posted without attribution by engadget?
I think Dell's trying, this is a bit better. The pretty pictures look okay, but it really comes down to the quality of the build. They always have big gaps between parts, wierd/ugly crap on the bottom, bad/faux finishes. Oh, and too many connectors, like I still need a pcmcia slot? A phone jack? If I really need that, I'll get a dongle. Otherwise spare me and most everybody else the legacy crap.
P.S. so true about the Sony previous industrial design. P.P.S. Do you really need to cram the logo into the hinge like that? Tacky!
This thing is too hot. Still, not as good-looking as the Ziba/Intel, but I can bet the Z/I doesn't and can't use any nVidia GPU. Now I can't decide which one to choose from!!!

That's really hot.
Is the engadget watermark really necessary?
Eric @ Jun 5th 2007 2:42PM
Absolutely,
They took those pictures, and they made the laptop. It's totally appropriate for them to water mark things that aren't theirs.
Ryan Block @ Jun 5th 2007 2:53PM

Perhaps they went through a lot of trouble to get the pics. I would put a watermark on too.
tid @ Jun 5th 2007 2:44PM
Yeh, 3 people died just so we could see these pics. Definately worth watermarking

What are you talking about, Eric? That laptop is a Dell. Engadget doesn't make laptops!

Does anyone know the native screen resolution?
nebulus @ Jun 5th 2007 3:51PM
I think its a similar panel to most of the other 13.3 inch screens so likely to be 1280x800

Larry @ Jun 5th 2007 3:03PM
Yep, I'd still take the Latitude XT anyday, it's definitely Dell's best product to date...

Engadget isn't throwing a © Copyright, per se, on the images, just tossing their name on it. Everyone knows they didn't make the laptop and they're not trying to pull a fast one. They simply knew they were hitting the web first with the news and wanted credit.
I'm not sure who would really be upset about that watermark, unless...hmm...uh huh. We know why you're really complaining. ;)
Trevor @ Jun 5th 2007 3:45PM
no one can touch the beauty of the mac. hilarious attempt tho!
Chinthaka @ Jun 5th 2007 4:01PM
yes, you're right. Nothing beats the beauty that is a slim cuboid with rounded edges...
was nice at the time, but i think its time apple moved forward in their laptop designs... its getting really old

Yeah "the Mac" is the only beautiful thing in the world. Try stepping out of the house once in a while.
Trevor @ Jun 27th 2007 1:45AM
who said it was? we're talking technology here. and how is the beauty of nature even relevant to this discussion? explain yourself.

purezerg @ Jun 5th 2007 4:16PM
why is everyone complaining about water mark when the photographer of that aston martin isnt even complaining.
Din @ Jun 5th 2007 4:18PM
Finally, Dell is catching on the importance of a good design team.
And I hate to say this because I respect the right to one's work, but the watermark sort of defeats the puropse of those pictures.
Dave Zatz @ Jun 5th 2007 4:25PM
"Wow, Dell finally hired a design team!"
Or they're using someone else's hardware. They used to have a pretty sexy ultra-portable which was really a rebranded Samsung laptop.

Zeke @ Jun 5th 2007 6:37PM
I will get this the day it comes out... IF it has a gigabit ethernet.... otherwise I wont.. thats what made me give away my m1210 and get a d620...
