Dell laptop Wal-Mart bound as well
It appears that Dell won't just be lining the shelves of Wal-Mart and Sam's Club with cheap-as-free desktop offerings this year, they're also prepping a laptop to keep the budget shoppers happy. Unfortunately, that's all we know right now, other than that Dell is planning the model for "later in the summer." Well, that and the fact that we don't plan to be blown away by the release.

Obligatory:
Yes, but will it run Linux?
Mike @ Jun 11th 2007 5:45PM
never mind linux, can it run doom?
William @ Jun 11th 2007 5:47PM
budget= probably cannot run doom

Doom 3, probably not, but I suspect these have more than enough power to run regular old 1993 Doom perfectly well if you can get it to run MS-DOS, perhaps via Parallels Workstation or some other virtualization or emulation environment. But seriously, if you are going to step back to 1993, you might as well do yourself a favor by also stepping back to 1988 to play some King's Quest IV: The Perils of Rosella.
OK, I was kidding at first, but that actually sounds like a pretty good idea.

But isn't Dell's strategy already to sell computers for the budget-minded with relative good/ok specs?
I'm not making fun of Dell here, but I've always thought that's what Dell was aiming for. Cheap/lower cost computers with somewhat good specs. That's what they always seem to be. I couldn't imagine what computer Dell could be doing to sell to budget shoppers. Unless it's an actual really good flagship computer that they'll sell, and just toss out all the other gigantic assortment of cheap computers that I can't even remember. If they did that, then that would make a 'statement'.

For Dell, I suspect the idea here is at least partly to expand their market by selling to people who might not be inclined to order a computer without being able to first see one on display, some of whom may nonetheless recognize the Dell brand and value its familiarity in their purchasing decisions—converting mindshare into marketshare, you might say.

From what I heard the deals where for pretty good deals, and the computers did not suck at all. However it is being sold at Wal-Mart so I will never buy it.
On an related note Dell recently laid-off %10 of thier work-force so I guess you save some green and thousands of people are now unemployed, I hope people enjoy thier new computers.
Wal-Mart strikes again.

Dell is a for-profit business that will cease to exist if it ceases to be profitable and in such cases, intelligent layoffs can strengthen a company overall, protecting not only the investments of the stockholders, but the jobs of the remaining workforce. Would you prefer a 100% reduction of their workforce and a 100% loss of the investments of stockholders?
Laid off workers with skill, talent, or even just persistence and good work ethics should be able to find other employment.
