Sony's Vaio CR series finally gets official
No real surprises at this point, but here's skinny on Sony's "worst kept secret" Santa Rosa-based Vaio CR series of 14.1-inch laptops. Sony is going the multi-color route with these, hoping to attract the fashionistas in the room with sangria, cosmopolitan, dove, indigo and black color options. Sony also packed in some fun keyboard-bordering LED action and even an option for a color-coordinated bag and mouse. Prices start at $1,350 and Sony will start shipments at the end of this month. Processors are all Core 2 Duo T7100, graphics do the Intel GMA X3100 thing, the display manages a 1280 x 800 resolution, and 2GB of RAM comes standard. Bloody love, those are beautiful. You North Americans and East Asians can consider yourselves lucky. We here in Europe don't get any of Sonys great looking laptops shipped over here.
The only Sony lappies availble here are very few, expensive and ugly.
Heck you guys even get to spec your own Sony laptop on theri website.

call me crazy, but is it just me or does this vaio take some serious design cues from the macbook pro?
cheese grater speakers on the side of the keyboard, completely flat top with the curved trimmings on the palm top.
not that I care or anything like that. sony laptops have a track record for being notoriously weak and break too easily, not to mention overpriced.

Sony was using this style keyboard long before Apple, chuds.
noob @ Jun 11th 2007 11:16AM
in that case I am in fact crazy :D
Craig @ Jun 11th 2007 10:46AM
The keyboard looks very MacBook style!
Argot @ Jun 11th 2007 12:22PM
Yes. Apple copied it from Sony a few years ago.

The shine on the lid has some serious aliasing! But overall, it's very pretty.

Seriously, go look at the older vaio's, then look at the Mac line. You used to originate, Sony, not imitate.

So many 'Sony copy Apple keyboard' comments, it gives me a headache. The keyboard was used on the X505. Google it if you want to know when it was released.

Slick. Makes me wish I wasn't broke.
Jeff @ Jun 11th 2007 11:49AM
Yay, a chiclet keyboard.
Why did everybody suddenly decide these were cool again now? Oh yeah, because Apple brought them back.
Too bad they suck just as bad now as they always did. (Yes, I have tried to type on a MacBook.)
Galley @ Jun 11th 2007 12:52PM
Mmm... Chiclets...
NutMac @ Jun 11th 2007 12:44PM
I would like to get it as a Windows PC (I have a Mac and not really into Boot Camp/Parallel/Fusion... rather have a separate PC), but the resolution is too limiting to me. Sony and most of the industries seem to be in love with 1280x800 for screen sizes including and up to 15.4-inch (Apple, Asus, Dell, HP business-class, and Lenovo are few of the exceptions that I can think of).
Jon @ Jun 11th 2007 1:05PM
I have to agree. My first laptop back in 1998 had a 1024x768 screen. My second laptop in 2001 had a 1600x1200 screen. Nowadays to find something with a higher resolution you will have to buy online.

Why is there a need to compare everything with an Apple product?
poseidongroove @ Jun 11th 2007 4:19PM
Apple fanboys/trolls always need to compare everything with Apple because they suffer from acute paradigm intelligence. The inability for a coucous infected brain to see beyond SJ's underwear. Spend more time checking things out before comparing Apple with anything. I like and use Apple products. I dislike the way Apple fanboys make a fool of themselves.
poseidongroove @ Jun 11th 2007 4:21PM
Typos !! inability of a couscous infected brain seeing beyond SJ's underpants !
Santosuke @ Jun 11th 2007 5:01PM
Darls, darls, the reason why they compare it to Apple products is because they're the best, so they're the measuring unit for everything to come. Clean and simple, no one hurt.
But anyway this laptop is a rip-off my blog's logo. You can see all the truth behind in this post: http://www.fashreport.com/fash_report/2007/06/shocking_sony_d.html
Hugs and kisses!
