Vista's search to be altered in first service pack, thanks Google
Seems that all it takes to get things done these days is whine and be named Google. A mere nine days after the aforementioned search giant kvetched about the rigidity of Vista's built-in search functionality, the higher-ups in Redmond have apparently caved. According to a blurb at CNET, "Microsoft plans to use the first service pack for Vista to make the changes to desktop search," and it was also suggested that the firm would detail these very changes "in a federal court filing being jointly made with the Justice Department." Man, talk about responsive.

boohoo, go wine at home google
But given that Eric Schmit sits on Apple's board, he doesn't want things to just work out of the box in Windows.
What about Microsoft's monopoly of operating systems if your'e taking that line?
Just a thought.................
No, no -- see, you mustn't REMIND people that Google's CEO is on Apple's board, otherwise they'll start to wonder why Google doesn't have a problem with the built-in search in Apple's OS.
THEN they might start to wonder about things like, oh... collusion, conspiracy, racketeering -- you know, all that stuff the DOJ is *supposed* to protect us from.
Don't remind people of the Apple-Google connection!!! People will start thinking, and we can't have THAT. Let's just beat up on "M$" again, like the good old days. Yeah!!!
This is just stupid. Why the hell does Google have to start whining because Live search is the default search engine option. It's pretty easy to change if you want to. Microsoft could sue Mozilla for favoring Google because Google is the default option for searching on Firefox.
This shows a big difference between Mac and PC. Mac ads go on and on about all the free stuff they include. Windows could include all the free programs in the world, put a lowercase "m" in front of them all, but they have to worry about anti-trust issues.
That said, I turned indexed Search off in Vista. Allegedly it's a big resource hog and 99% of my searches are just within email anyway. Which is actually slower than using a web browser to search Gmail, ironically. (Yeah I know, PST files suck, but still)

If you leave the search indexer on (and use Outlook 2007) email searches are lightning fast.
Also, the indexer is very heavily deprioritized. It will not impact your system while you're using it. However, if you wander off for a while and come back you may find your programs swapped out as the indexer has been working the disk cache. :) For me that's an acceptable compromise.
Man, i love Google...but i love my indexed searches in Vista too. I really hope that all they add is an on/off switch. If it's anything past that, i will block the SP1 update.
Its all because Google and Apple are butt buddies with the whole iPhone bullshit. See? I figured it out. Go me...
Google wants there s**t in everything, my question is who the f**k uses google desktop search. they should just go ahead and make their own os, they want to replace s**t in the everybody else's how much they spend on lawsuits they could design a os.
Get ready for google to make up an excuse why the saving your info and files when using their search on your computer
And no one says anything about google search being the default for firefox browsers?
Another reason for me to not use Google... I avoid them like the plague these days!
Make the search suck less. I hate the vista search.
Google needs to compete everywhere it can.
Google Desktop Search is not going to be the better search for Vista. It is average to below average software, as is most of the Google software, except WEB searching software.
GMail is average, but free. (until Google uses your mail contents and searches to sell profiles to ad companies.)
Don't install it if you don't like it!
okay - yep - initially i thought "you can just go around calling MS a monopoly whenever they do something u don't like". but someone pointed this out on slashdot:
* MS’s search feature slows down other search features.
* MS’s search feature uses undocumented APIs that provide an unfair advantage to competitors who don’t happen to also have the source code and documentation to Windows.

BAD GOOGLE! You sniveling little weenies! So when did you start sounding like Sun Micro?
If people want to use your crappy little spy software they can, but if spying on my documents is the only innovation you offer over Vista built-in then shove it!
Microsoft should let you choose to use it but add it to Windows Defender as spyware and delete it. ;)
Regardless of whether or not "changing" the Vista search system is bad or good, if MS did in fact infringe on Google's patents, Google is REQUIRED BY LAW to defend themselves. If they don't then there is a legal precedence of inaction i.e. they don't care about their patents and they become essentially unenforceable in the future. So in our strange legal reality, Google didn't have a choice.
A few things...
Google will not go after OS X for a few reasons:
Legally, it can't because Eric Schmidt is on the BOD of Apple, and a BOD is there for the general interest of the companies and cannot have conflicting companies.
Also, because Schmidt is on the BOD, of course he's not gonna go after Apple, they're friends.
Plus, the Google Desktop search was made for windows first and they only released a mac version in April 2007, which works because Apple lets it work alongside spotlight, unlike Microsoft.
This is actually a good legal argument that Google is making. Why else would Microsoft agree so quickly. Vista should not block out a program because Microsoft wants consumers to use their stuff and not Google's.
Anyways, have you heard what Microsoft says about Google?
Microsft much change Office 2007 also! They have embedded MS Desktop Search deeply into the program.
Its annoying to see...
Standard the application can only search sequentially and not indexed.
therefore you need to install windows desktop search. Really pathetic.
People keep saying Google is going to collect there data. But what about MSN, at least Google has the balls to go out and say what there doing unlike MS.
As for this search thing though I think people are quick to judge we have no idea how Google's search will be put in Vista. I use there desktop search in XP when I need something but I don't always keep it on and it works fine.
1) I really love when some jerk says "oooohh, Vista is teh shit! Me hatez! So I CRACK IT!" WTF?! If you soooo hate Vista and you just can't stand it, why the hell would you crack and USE it then?! Are you some kind of a retard? Idiot? Cretin? Or just an asshole whiner?
2) Where the fuck gets google the right to order Microsoft what to do or what NOT to do?! I hate Google's desktop search, period (besides, I'm not alone), so, why should Google dictate what should MS take out or in in THEIR VERY OWN PRODUCT?! WTF?! It's like if I was manufacturing cars and some walk-bys would start whining over my garage that they hate the color I picked for my productline and they'd sue me if I don't repaint it. They won't buy it afterwards, they just hated the color, because it makes their own cars less appealing.
Besides, why doesn't anybody else sue Apple for making their iPhone (oh I hate that thing already!) white, because it makes their black phones sales to drop!
I guess, if a robber can sue a guy who was sleeping while the dickhead was robbing him and cut himself from a glass, anything goes in the America!
Hooooraaay! Let's all be like the Americans, it's such a FREE country I can't even start to imagine! They're all so free, they can do whatever they want, like rob and sue the robee (is there such a word?), or hell no, I'll sue microsoft for using a green meadow in WinXP instead of more "ugly" something else, because it makes Linux completely uncompetitive with its geeky desktop images! Or no, better yet, I'll sue engadget for not writing about myself, how great and cool I am (as I really am!) which makes nobody to like me! It's based on nothing actually, but still, I'll sue them!
*off writing a complaint to the Justice Department*
The article itself is one-sided, What does he mean...thanks Google
