Nokia N95 + RC plane = unlimited DIY aerial photography
If you've found yourself tempted by other interesting DIY aerial photography rigs, but spent all your dough on the Nokia N95 instead, you may still be able to make a lifelong (or momentary) dream come true. A pioneering lad over at the N95 Blog has suggested that nearly unlimited high-resolution aerial photography can be yours if you're willing to strap your precious handset to an RC plane and get savvy with Pict'Earth software. The application allows users to create a theoretical Google Earth of their own if the existing imagery isn't up to snuff with their personal standards. Still, we'd have to mull this one over mighty hard before attaching such a valuable communicator to a potential death bed, but feel free to let us know how things go if you can muster the courage.

I have a really hard time believing that little park-flyer could get off the ground with that cellphone atttached to it.
I don't know how big the Easy Star is. But I got an old Multiplex plane and it is huge. It's a good transporter.
and youre not the only one
Posts like these make me smile
DSLRS don't have software embedded to map the photos (though I suppose you could tether a Nikon to a GPS to get lat/lon into the EXIF data).
or if you still have time and money to spend you could do it right. :P

I wonder thou.. How to you tell the Phone to take the picture.. Is that something in the software that snaps shots at pre-set Locs or something else..
Im just lost on that fact.. and yeah.. I dont think that lil foam plane will take a payload more than the planes weight..
I think it would be much cheaper to find a old used windows mobile smartphone and a cheapo bluetooth gps and use that. It would be like $150, $200 max
So, like... by DIY aerial photography, you mean peeping on the hot neighbor girl, right?
The Gallery speaks for itself. Check the EXIF.

Anybody have any comments on the N95? I'm thinking about picking one up to hold me over till the iPhone's 2nd generation. I have a hateful and vile 8525 now and it is driving me insane.
Those ARE good snaps! Too bad you can't do video...COPS car chase reenactment...anyone!!
Um...But why was he over the Pacific Ocean in the first place?! Was he mapping Whales?

From Pict'Earth USA:
We strategically chose this plane, the Easy Star. It has a propeller that is in the back of the fuselodge, which makes it safe to take off and land. The plane is easy to fly, it will glide for a really long time after a takeoff with the brushless electric motor.
The N95 is strategic for us too. It is all in one data collection device with its gps, optics, and the Pict'Earth software. If your wondering about the safety of the phone, all of the 2,500+ pictures that are in the website gallery are from the same N95. The phone is protected inside the body of the plane, a foam sarcophagus. It is a special "elapor" foam that is nearly indestructible, and highly repairable.
At Pict'Earth we sell imaging systems that are powerful, easy to operate, and at a low cost.
