Oracle ships cardboard laptops
In a typical big-business outlay of money for no apparent reason, Oracle has begun to mail cardboard laptops to certain personages of distinction, touting "Information Rights Management" (or as we like to call it, Super Duper Security), which the company hopes to unload on willing consumers / companies / schoolmarms. Users who have received the laptops say the new systems are lightweight and stylish, although there have been complaints regarding the lack of an optical drive, screen, memory, trackpad, battery, motherboard, and processor.

Hey, it's more stylish that a Dell, IBM or Apple. Oh zing!
Seriously, at least this can be recycled.

The thing is, Dells, IBMs and Apples all have a purpose, unlike this. :)

So you are saying Apple, who spends billions of dollars on good looks and features is worse than this?

seeing the title i thought they'd made some sort of environmentally friendly case... quite the oposite in fact, theyve probably destroyed a chunk of forest for advertising ^^

Actually, if someone would take the read the copy on the box, this marketing campaign makes sense to me. It’s not really about DRM. They’re talking about stopping sensitive data on laptops getting into the wrong hands. Think about all the stolen laptops at airport security, government agencies, and so on with private data. Apparently, what Oracle is promoting is a way to encrypt that data. Whatever you might think about Oracle, I’d rather have my SSN protected compared to being in the wild because some bumbling government worker let their laptop get swiped.

If you read the comments on the original flickr photos, this turns out to have been a prank by a friend of the recipient :)

Does anyone even pay attention to Oracle much anymore?
It seems you never hear word about them.

Dell actually sent out useful notebooks (paper) shaped like the new m1330 they have. I got the oddly shaped box and opened it and chuckled over it. Boss came around the corner and I said, "Hey, check out my new laptop." Thing is about a 3/4" thick and fairly tiny. Comes with awesome free-write version of Notepad!
