Team Xecuter's Hard Drive Xtender replaces PS3 HDD with your own
Rest assured, those looking for a clean solution to add hard drive space to their PlayStation 3 had mixed emotions when pondering the Hyperdrive. Thankfully, Team Xecuter has unveiled a much sleeker (and flexible) alternative with the Hard Drive Xtender; the device actually replaces the internal PS3 hard drive and provides a plug to run externally, where you can then attach your favorite SATA or IDE drive (with optional adapter). Obviously, the biggest boon in this setup is the money you'll save from not having to spend a small fortune on a dense 2.5-inch SATA drive, and considering that the Hyperdrive can reportedly be used in conjunction, the limits of PS3 capacity are now slightly closer to endless. Hackers rejoice, it's yours for a meager £12.99 ($26).[Thanks, Jaimesh]

Now with the Xtreme Xtender my PS3 can get the Ego boost it needs to perform.

I like this whole thing. But, they should've also made a cover with a hole to allow access to the SATA port, instead of having that ugly silver tray exposed.
For $26, I'd take both.

Odd, mine came with a cover to replace the stock one and expose just the port. I really wish they had also extended the power outlet too though.

Okay, basically this is a:
Metal shell that fits inside your PS3's HD slot/spot
SATA HD Connectors
PCB
Umm... How is this revolutionary? I can do the exact same thing with a dremel and a internal SATA to eSATA port already. And not to mention that the plates are all of $5 bucks. With no shipping, because I can get them at the local Microcenter.
Also, there is no power port. What good does that do? You'd have to power your drive somehow else. Granted, most eSata boxes are powered--but you don't have the eSata port on there!
I will stick with my solution, thanks.

Nobody said it was revolutionary.

I think I can count the number of people willing to take a dremel tool to their $600+ piece of hardware on one hand.

1. They are violating their warranty by putting this in the PS3.
2. It would require the same level of expertise. Plug A goes into socket A, etc.
3. You still need a HD and some way to power it.
Most people don't care about 1, but 2 and 3 are pretty much end-all issues for most people. And if you aren't willing to wreck your equipment, you don't deserve to pirate games--and lets face it, that's the only reason to upgrade your PS3, or I should say it would be the only reason if you could actually do that. Which you can't at this moment.
Go big, or go home. If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. We build. We fight. SEABEES!

Actually, I ran out of space on my hard drive with all the installed games, E3 videos and demos I had downloaded. Sure, I could just delete everything I didn't use anymore, but I'm a digital pack-rat. I keep practically everything.
Mitch @ Jul 14th 2007 4:18PM
So basically, this lets me use a larger/cheaper HDD externally while my PS3 recognizes it as internal?
Darren Tilley @ Jul 14th 2007 5:14PM
Exactly correct.
Paris K @ Jul 14th 2007 5:32PM
Why didn't someone do this for the xbox0360 ? Or did they?
chris @ Jul 14th 2007 8:59PM
microsoft wants you to buy their POS add on for a price of $100
Jackyshadow @ Jul 14th 2007 6:43PM
Well, the x360 HDD is encrypted with some hardcore DOD tech, so u won't be able to get a third-party HDD running on it unless you are a terrorist.
hmmmm @ Jul 14th 2007 9:13PM
i havent been following ps3 hackin much still in love with my xbmc but does this mean i could put a 200 internal drive in the ps3, then hook an addition 1tb external hard drive then play all my divx files...can the ps3 play divx? if so ps3mc sounds nice
Benko @ Jul 15th 2007 12:57AM
someone said it'll help sell more units but selling games is where the profit is, the console/unit itself has little or no profit
I predict game copy serializing with external/online/telephone host registration and activation, consoles with processor ids, automatic disable identifiers for unregistered console id matches with game serial (oh wait that sounds like micro$oft not $ony)
how far off is this, but it is a war, make no mistake, afterall nothing is flawless, the systems all contain a hole that is yet to be exploited even if it is visible

This is sooooo old it's not even funny!

I really don't see the point of this add-on when you should be aiming to get all your media to a network attached storage. I've got a Dlink-DNS 323 NAS hooked up to my router. It's my iTunes and PS3 media server.
If you download Twonky http://www.twonkyvision.com it enables the NAS to be DLNA capable which the PS3 is. Next thing use Yahoo Pipes to aggreegate all your video/podcast feeds and download them to the NAS using TVTonic. Can't wait for firmware 2.0 which would allow me to subscribe to all my pipes.
I've got two 500GB SATA drives in Raid 1 configuration. I'd rather download content to drives that are not locked to any device than otherwise. Finally Azureus and TVTonic are great for syndicated content as well. Honestly, if anyone is in any doubt. The PS3 a great entertainment centre in your living room. I don't want a plane taking off in my living room (XBox360). Start here if you're interested in the NAS option. http://wiki.dns323.info/ One last thing. Tversity is also great for syndicating content from all your PCs and feeds to the PS3.
