Apple rumor report: new iMacs and iLife on August 7th
From the infamous Apple rumor mill comes another shocking revelation which all of us should take as lightly as possible, knowing how these things tend to go. The current hot gossip comes from ThinkSecret, wherein the oft cited "reliable sources" recount Apple's exact date (August 7th) for announcing the brand-spanking-new iMac, replete with updated specs and the sexy brushed aluminum casing we keep "hearing" about. The article also suggests that a new version of iLife will be emerging at the same time, but reports are less clear on a solid release date. Of course, both of these rumors carry no backup from the boys in Cupertino, so as of right now all we can do is play wait-and-see.

i'Ve been replaced?
Yes, Josh-- that is if your real name it Wit.
what is the street date for thier new OS? why would anyone buy a new mac till that was the native os anyways?
When OS Tiger came out, anyone that purchased a Mac prior to some cutoff (perhaps 4 weeks earlier?) got a free upgrade from Panther. If I remember correctly, iLife was upgraded for free, too.
Whats the point of these posts.. since they moved to Intel, we all know that they are going to move to the next Intel chipsets and cpus. They are basically PCs now with the Apple tax.
Wake me up when they make a sub 5lb laptop.
wrong. Mac are always pc(personal computer). Computer with window as an OS(operating system) is just one type of personal computer. Just like a computer with Linux as a OS is also one type of pc.
whatever. i'm waiting for leopardo
Yawns @ iMac. How about a tower for under $1500 Apple?
They do...a mini :)
@ dglaz...
The Mac Mini is much more akin to a Shuttle PC or a media center PC (only in terms of size).
I too would like to see a sub-$1500 desktop from Apple. Perhaps something with similar specs to the current MBP lineup, with more options to customize? They've been making quite the sexy desktop tower for a few years now but as is, I can't really justify the premium to use OSX.
"From the infamous Apple rumor mill..." - A rumor.
"...both of these rumors carry no backup..." - So proof.
So exactly how did this become an Engadget post again?
There are weird people out there who want to hear every rumor, myth, and story about their favorite company...like macfanboy zombies
Same goes to MSfanboys...
Still, I wouldn't be surprised if this is true; apple seems to be all about asthetics these days...
It became an Engadget post because it's been nearly two whole months since Apple last replaced one of their products. That fact alone makes it entirely credible, and because that point should be completely obvious by now, Engadget rightfully doesn't mention it every one of these new iProduct rumor articles. There's only so much control-c-control-v that an editor's fingers can handle, especially when dealing with a subject matter such as this.
We'll see how nice they are but for now, I am waiting for Leopard to upgrade my iMac G5
While I don't expect an update until after the Back to School special ends, Apple has in the past excluded new releases from the special offer.
The Q3 reports are released on Wednesday, July 25th. The stock will soar. Apple does release new iMac and iLife/iWork/.Mac two weeks later would make sense. Waiting until just after the Back to School special to release the new 6G iPods with OS X, high capacity Nanos, and a Shuffle with a lower price-point (there is no reason to up the storage of a device with no display) would make sense as it would usher in the Holiday shopping season.
But would need something else for the weeks before these assumed iMac release and iPod release. Maybe some significant new features to the iPhone. After all, we can't have Apple's new cash cow get forgotten among their other products, can we?
Another overpriced all-in-one computer that you can't upgrade. Just what the world needs.
The iMac IS upgradeable you goddamned flaming idiot. The point of ANY AIO system (Mac or PC) is you get to save desk real estate. If people want something where they can swap out the logic board and processor then they'll get that. These AIO's are abviously not that. If you're going to be ignorant about your posts you should... Oh why do I even bother...
Let's see. You can't upgrade the processor, hard drive or video card. Yeah, that's what I call upgradeable! What are you upgrading? Tiger to Leopard doesn't count. Just trying to keep it real...
Well, you CAN upgrade the hard drive, and you CAN upgrade the RAM. Guess what? The VAST majority of consumers never even go that far.
You can also upgrade the video card.
Too bad you can only upgrade it to a less crappy one, though.
If they are coming out with a new iMac, I doubt it will be aluminum. That housing is usually reserved for their "Pro" line. My money is on a black iMac.
KenBan,
Do you have a link showing successfully upgraded the CPU to a faster proc?
I realize it Can be done, it doesn't mean that the firmware in EFI has been written to detect the CPU speed automatically.
Not saying its easy but the CPU is in a standard socket and if your willing to take the system apart you can replace it. The hard drive is just a standard SATA drive and again it takes some work but you can replace it. The 24" iMac does use a mostly laptop standard MXM video card but to my knowledge there is no known card that you can upgrade to. The problem being that since Apple built the Intel macs to use EFI instead of a standard BIOS so you need a video card that supports EFI.
yes,
welcome ILife07 for WINDOWS/OSX/IPhone ;-)
I don't believe Apple would refresh hardware a month before leopards launch, Im guessing October for anything Mac related.
Apple has released new Macs prior to the OS coming out.
There is too much to release before October, which the latest date when the Xmas refreshes/updates can come out to be highly viable for Q1 2008 (which starts Oct. 1st), Apple's busiest season.
Software:
• Leopard
• iLife '08
• iWork '08
• .Mac '08
Hardware:
• iMac redesign
• iPod Video redesign
• and possibly some performance and spec upgrades
That is too much at once. Apple doesn't want any one thing to get lost so I suspect it will be broken up as new iMacs first in Aug, then the release of new iPods in Sept, then the new software in Oct. That gives us a new in each month.
Disclaimer: pure speculation on my part
Don't care about the iMac. iLife '07 however, is LONG overdue.
I think they should just skip iLife '07 and just wait until iLife '08 during the next Macworld in January, its only 3 months away from october, any way.
"Let's see. You can't upgrade the processor, hard drive or video card. Yeah, that's what I call upgradeable! What are you upgrading? Tiger to Leopard doesn't count. Just trying to keep it real..."
Obviously you have never touched or opened an iMac it IS upgradeable. Stop posting FUD.
This article says the iMac CPU is upgradeable since it uses a standard socketed connector: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/faq_cd/imac-intel-processor-upgrade-video-upgrade.html
The article further goes on to say that there is a slot that a third-party manufacturer could use to upgrade the graphics capabilities.
All this is a moot point, since hardly anybody would bother to upgrade this type of machine except to say yippee, I knew it was possible. And as of yet no company has made a card for that special graphics slot.
The rumor has it that the Intel Mobile Extreme Processor is going to be used in the upcoming iMac. That chip probably is soldered to the motherboard, so it's not gonna be upgradeable. Apple is going for thin so the soldered chips have a lower profile.
just bought my iMac a week ago.... oh well, if this is true, I still will enjoy it...can't sit around buying all these rumors without buying the technology! Where's the fun in that?!?!
If I were you I would return it now... and hold off buy ANY new apple hardware until they release something. These current products have reached the end of their life cycle.
But thats just me. Enjoy what you got if you want, its still an awesome computer.
yeah I think I'll just keep it, already installed most of my stuff, have gotten used to it, as I've never owned a Mac before..and don't feel like paying the +$100 fee to return with out-of-box....
We are going to see new graphics card I bet along with Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player. Not to mention games like Gear of War new better graphic cards then the 8600GT
umm are u serious games like gears of war??? thats all over MS not mac.. plus its on 360.... that pisses me off
I don't understand these particular rumors. Why would Apple release a brand new version of their consumer desktop before the new operating system is released and before the new school year? Of course they are going to wait until the school special is over so they can sell remaining stock of their previous version. And of course they are going to wait until the new operating system is pre-loaded so any new features in the hardware will work with the new features in the software (like the new & improved iChat).
Also, people keep talking about an iPhone nano being released soon. Don't we all remember the reason Jobs introduced iPhone months before its release? He said the federal government filings would undoubtedly reveal their plans and he didn't want someone else to steal the glory of announcing this awesome item. It wouldn't be any different if they released a simpler, smaller iPhone.
9to5mac.com says that in addition to iMacs, new video iPods
http://www.9to5mac.com/August-Aug-7-seventh-iMacs-Apple-Event-ipod-ipod-micro-nano-3450897543
NAH! I don't think that they will release an imac before Leopard.
I waited & waited to get my first Mac because of all the rumors and crap floating around (pun intended) but decided to pull the trigger in June on a new imac and I haven't regretted it once.
If you wait until the "NEXT BIG THING" comes out, you will be waiting all your life!
"Do not fear the Mac it will not harm you!" (Takes drink of Apple Kool-Aid)
I believe the correct caption is:
"i iz replaced?" This would make the picture lolmac compatible.
Thanks.
