Second generation iPhone for $249 in September?
Remember all those version 2 iPhone rumors rumbling about back in May. Well, they're back and running amuck in Taiwan. According to DigiTimes, Taiwan's Chinese-language Commercial Times says that Taiwan's Wintek has gained the touch-screen panel orders for the second-gen iPhone. The report claims that Wintek has already begun test production in small volumes with Apple intent on selling their newest model of the iPhone in September for somewhere between $249 and $299. Unfortunately, the article doesn't state where this flavor of the iPhone will be sold. An important omission given that September is the same rumored delivery for Quanta's iPhone variant meant specifically for non-US markets. Of course, that would be too early according to (some) JP Morgan analysts although Kevin Chang, and his vision of an iPhone nano, would surely disagree. To muddle things further, Wintek was just fingered as the supplier of panels for future touch-screen iPods set to launch in August. However, DigiTimes sources are now reporting that the iPod's capacitive touch-screen will be "less complicated" than the panel used for the current iPhone. No multi-touch? Who knows. Man, rumor mongering is a silly business... interesting, but silly.P.S. Yes, that's a mock-up to the right.

groggit @ Nov 16th 2007 7:00AM
I doubt there will be another iPhone in the US for at least 12 more months, but this could/hopefully be a 3G version for other countries. The price would kinda make sense too, cause here in Australia phones are free when they come with a service plan, no $600 upfront BS.
Rohit Kapur @ Jul 17th 2007 5:25AM
I think that at that price range, it's more likely to the iPod than the iPhone.
Personally, this whole iPhone and 6'th Gen iPod business has made life difficult for me. I've been holding out for the 6'th Gen iPod since last year, and now, since I'm in India, I can't even get the iPhone, which, though quite spiffy in every way, I'm not sure I'd want since it's only 8 gigs of space.
I wish Apple would release the iPhone with some 15 or 20 gigs of space. . . I'd but it in an instant, if only for the convenience of having my phone and iPod in the same device.
LordFarkward @ Jul 17th 2007 5:50AM
concurred. i think it'll be for the ipod, not iphone
AAPL is not THAT stupid, there's no way in hell they'll do this to screw the first gen iphone adopters. yes, their first gen is *always sub-par*, and they're the reason for upgrades, but the upgrades won't come so soon.
something tells me that these guys are all just speculating 2nd iphone news to get clicks...
Joe @ Jul 17th 2007 7:42AM
Not that it helps you in India but I've decided this: and iPhone for my podcasts and most popular 2-3 Gigs of music. I may or may not put some video on it so I may have more than that much music. I'll buy a Gen6 iPod when it comes out for my entire music collection, which is, unto itself, only 9 Gigs. Kills me that there is no 16Gig iPhone. That would be perfect.
I'm sure applications (3rd party or Apple updated) will eat tens-of-megs of precious iPhone memory.
Rohit Kapur @ Jul 17th 2007 7:04AM
Nice idea, Joe, but I think it would be a little too hard for me to implement it, even if I lived in the States. I have a music collection that's around 14 gigs right now, and out of that, my playlist of most listened to songs is around 8 gigs in itself. At most, I can cut that down to, say, 7 or 6 gigs, if I really let go of some songs, but nothing below that. Music is my biggest passion, and I regularly add new songs to my collection, so it's ever expanding. Living within the confines of 8 gigs (remember - it's only 7.24 after formatting) would be nigh impossible.
And I can't buy both. Not THAT rich. :-)
Ah well. . . I guess I've waited this long; I can wait a while longer for the "perfect" device. Gotta come out sometime!
Chris Kelley @ Jul 18th 2007 4:33PM
@caperno:
"since i'm in india" != "i'm indian"
learn to read.
Rohit Kapur @ Jul 18th 2007 8:41PM
Actually Chris, I AM Indian. :-) Born and raised, too. My English is good simply because I grew up watching cartoons in English, and was forced to learn it. That along with my dad's watching only English shows on TV pretty much gave me the foundation I needed, which I built on by reading books and writing poetry.
And oh yeah, I may not be the average Indian in this respect, but I'm no anomaly. Most kids who go to English-medium schools here now can speak English pretty decently.
Hehe. . . We've totally left course on the topic, and this conversation could well be held outside Engadget!
On topic: BRING OUT THE NEXT iPOD ALREADY!! SHEESH!
Cameron @ Jul 17th 2007 6:19AM
"P.S. Yes, that's a mock-up to the right." oh it mocks alright...
Malcolm @ Jul 17th 2007 6:24AM
So... your telling me I bought an iphone in late JUNE.. for the price to drop substantially roughly a few months later in SEPTEMBER... SAY IT AINT SO. I'll have to agree with the others.. I'm thinking this is an ipod. I dont think a device priced at the 600/500 range would see a price cut that drastic so soon.
Ken @ Jul 17th 2007 6:42AM
$249-$299 is in line with what people would pay for an iPod. I'd love to see an 80GB iPod with widescreen video and the same form factor as the iPhone. I'm pretty sure Apple would charge more than $299 for it, though.
Matteo @ Jul 17th 2007 7:07AM
I don't think it is a 3G version of the iPhone. The iPhone sold worldwide will have roughly the same features as the ones sold in the US, so the price target given in the rumor seems unrealistic. Carriers in Europe usually subsidize the phones more than in Europe, so the very same iPhone could have a lower price tag in Europe (although I doubt it since the iPhone, unlike most other phones, really doesn't generate that many revenues for the carrier (content, music, ringtones are delievered directly by Apple, with little to no piece of the pie going to the carrier (particularly if using Wi-Fi or computer sync)).
It is more likely that what they are talking about is, if the rumor is actually somewhat true, a new generation iPod.
The iPod will have a set of features a less rich than the iPhone, in order to avoid it cannibalizing the iPhone sales, also because in other countries (outside the US) the iPhone and this new generation iPod will have release dates that are a lot closer to eachother. Another point is that purchases of the iPhone are also being delayed because of people waiting for their current contract to expire (hence sales don't follow a usual trend but tend to be spread more over time). This is also the reason because I don't think we will see price cuts in the near future. My guess is: no Wi-Fi (although this is still an open question, depends on how much Apple decides to innovate without fearing cannibalization), yes Bluetooth (in order to sell wireless headsets or maybe feature some "social interaction" (see also Wi-Fi) to compete with the Zune), no touchscreen (because of the patent Apple filed about the backlit touchwheel and mousepad), very few widgets, but yes to GAMES.
What is going to be interesting is the new design of the iPod and all the new devices Apple will bring out in the future. My personal question is if the iPhone has set a new design trend at Apple. I think this is realistic also considering the redesign of Apple's US site. Black and metal seem to be the current trend, no longer white and plastic...
I like that design
Anto @ Jul 17th 2007 7:09AM
I don't doubt that Apple will have a few tricks up it's sleeves but there's no way Apple are going to launch ANY new iPhones or for that matter iPods (assuming they will be multitouch) before the iPhone is launched in Europe. They wouldn't want to cannibalise iPhone sales.
Sinbios @ Jul 17th 2007 7:20AM
Kevin Chang's "vision"? Kevin Chang was FIRED for his "vision", and people are still taking what he said seriously?
Kirk @ Jul 17th 2007 8:37AM
I wonder if the 2nd generation iPhone will be updated to modern cell phone standards?
jilie @ Jul 17th 2007 8:56AM
Engadget don't get all wet, it just rumors
Tim @ Jul 17th 2007 9:47AM
$100 says it's for the newest version of the iPod, just in time for Apple to announce "One more thing..." - a video rental service that caters to AppleTV, iPod, and iPhone.
The positioning for renting iTunes movies/tv shows would be brought up just in time to gain attention before the holiday shopping season.
carlo @ Jul 17th 2007 9:54AM
I was told "in six months they will be coming out with a new iPhone".
Who knows though. CSRs are usually easily confused.
Michael @ Jul 17th 2007 10:07AM
Come on guys, lets think.
Apple is not going to release a new iPhone only a few months after the first one. They also aren't going to release a special 3G iPhone for Europe and the rest of the world. That's not how they think. Plus it would make a lot of Americans really mad. We already get screwed with the worst phones from the asian market, last thing we need is an American company doing the same thing to us.
There are only two possible answers for this.
1. An iPhone nano - Simple, smaller, less expensive music phone for people who don't need/want a smart phone.
2. A new iPod - more likely given the details. iPods were refreshed last September so a September release sounds very obvious this time. People saying the iPod will canibalize iPhone sales juat aren't considering that they are two different products. The iPod will have more capacity and less features and the iPhone will be able to make calls and browse the web.
tiuk @ Jul 17th 2007 10:51AM
iPods are normally launched around September, and the 5G has been due for replacement for a long time. I'm betting that's it.
Mary Webster @ Jul 17th 2007 9:25PM
Maybe it is iPhone Nano.
What do you think about the next generation iPhone? What features should be included so that you regard iPhone as the best mobile phone? Maybe the following specifications from http://www.dvdtoiphone.net/ are what you need.
* Flash (swf, flv) video playback supported.
* Third-party software: There are many programs available for Windows Mobile and Palm. Many iPhone applications like games, word processing, slideshow making, video converters will be developed.
* Support 3G network.
* Record video with the bulit-in camera.

"Your English is quite good for an Indian."
Well duh, seeing as more people speak English in India than anything else you uneducated moron!
Stephen @ Jul 19th 2007 5:24PM
I wouldn't rush getting the 2nd gen iphone for $249 that could only hold 8gb's... I would wait for the touch screen "IPOD" to come out, which shouldn't be to long aways
Brock @ Aug 19th 2007 4:27PM
Pretty sure this is an iPod by the sound of everything. I can't wait for that new iPhone cause I held off on buying the initial launch and waited for a better made one because they definitely faulted in areas they shouldn't have faulted in (no mms, EDGE???, etc.) THEY NEED TO BREAK THE 100 GB BARRIER WITH THE iPOD. ARCHOS DID IT!! With 76 GB of music and another 11 GB of video, it's annoying not being able to fit everything on my iPod. I can't take it anymore!
isaac @ Aug 17th 2007 8:05AM
Well how reliable is this report? Inevitably the iPhone will be upgraded, so it seemed silly to me to buy into the first one anyway. Upgrades come fast and furious, and the first gen phone is sure to suffer some aggrivating flaws. But hopefully the second gen (whenever it actually comes out) will be a smart buy. The phone now is a truly great concept, but for me, it lacks a few necessary items to make it worth the price tag. However, I guess time will tell what the second generation brings. But I can't legitimately believe that it will come as fast as September, drop 300$, AND have upgrades. But again, time will tell.
Gabriel @ Dec 9th 2007 2:50PM
wow!!!!
i thought the second gen would be better looking, maybe in new colors, but....
that tiny screen looks jacked up
u cant really see gud vids or pics.
i would rather have the 1st gen (wich mine is coming in 5-10 days!!! YEAH!!!)
