Archos 605 ship date and price point revealed?
The 160GB variant of the Archos 605 has popped up on Amazon, with the price point of $399.99 and an availability date of September 1st. This doesn't appear to be another one of Amazon's dodgy guestimate postings either, as it seems like physical pre-orders at this price / release date are being accepted. So, your choices are either take the plunge, or wait until September. Hopefully we'll have some more solid information before then.[Thanks, Jose]

not only this, but all the current gen Archos (except 704) are on clearance sale from Archos's store

people still buy these things
Erik @ Jul 22nd 2007 4:59PM
Amazing that people want better screens, more capacity, and greater codec support than a lot of other players...
jeff @ Jul 22nd 2007 4:57PM
160 gb 4.3" wifi touchscreen dvr with good codec support? yes, people still buy these things. A tad big for the pocket, but for people who travel/commute this thing will be awesome. Its also a reasonable home media center if you arent already equipped.

You hate the iPhone for no reason too, dont you?

$400 in USA = 160GB
$400 in UK = 30GB
:(

Are you trying to make a point? :)
I'll bet the Archos costs a lot in Australia, too.
E71 @ Jul 22nd 2007 7:16PM
Pwned.
Discosis @ Jul 22nd 2007 10:31PM
You can barely even find an 04 series in Australia (my 504 raises geek eyebrows when I use it in public). Check out the Archos resellers in Australia (listed from their own site), they're mom+pop operations in remote regional area and they're mostly still pushing Gminis and 00 series.
I don't get it ...

I have a 604 WiFi and even with all its problems, I still want to upgrade!
160GBs & 800x480 and great codec support, I am sold. Of course I would want few more codecs, but the main ones are there.
Didn't they originally say that it could play 720@24P videos?

Does the Archos support soft subtitles (.srt files) or any type of subs? Just curious.
ScOObyDoo @ Jul 22nd 2007 6:02PM
They have already started shipping in Europe, so I'm not sure this single Amazon guesstimate will stick.
pyro @ Jul 22nd 2007 6:26PM
I'll buy an Archos when they decide to make a PMP that doesn't have poor sound quality. I'm going to go with the Cowon Q5 instead.
E71 @ Jul 22nd 2007 7:25PM
I'd also go with that one too if only they had a 160GB hdd and as many codecs as 605 will support. Oh yeah, I hear 605 160GB will be slimmer than 504 160GB -- if that's true then no way am I going for the Cowon. I mean, I already got Wifi/HSDPA/GPS/Bluetooth on my phone...
pyro @ Jul 22nd 2007 8:07PM
You have to pay for half of the codecs on archos players. the few codecs the Q5 doesnt support can just be installed to windows CE.
Foley @ Jul 22nd 2007 6:58PM
Hopefully the Q5 actually surfaces in the States soon. I've been waiting for that too. Cowon has been very silent on a US release date.
gnubee @ Jul 22nd 2007 7:02PM
plays 720p on anything handy. on unit display 800x480
Ian Jardine @ Jul 22nd 2007 8:24PM
Is this a potential challenger to the Nokia N800?
JohnTitor @ Jul 22nd 2007 9:27PM
yeah I actually I was thinking that too. With all the PMP functions + the Wifi and Opera internet with Flash, this thing really could take sales from the N800
angelsvairwaves1 @ Jul 22nd 2007 11:11PM
It's so close to being the perfect PMP...
in my mind, the perfect PMP is just a screen, and maybe a hold switch. iPhone comes close (small storage capacity, tho) and this comes even closer.
JUST GET RID OF THE BUTTONS ON THE SIDE!!
JohnTitor @ Jul 23rd 2007 12:22AM
the 704 does that already, and the 705 will do the same while being a bit thinner
the only problem is, they are the size of a UMPC, mainly made for travel entertainment not really for On the Go (Archos's old slogan) use

Does anyone know if the 05 line works with the 04 DVR station. I'm not interrested in upgrading if you have to buy all the new accessories too!
JohnTitor @ Jul 23rd 2007 1:15PM
yes it does
Media Center Show @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:10AM
Hear COO of Archos Larry Smith talk about the new lineup, the DVR station, and how the deal with Echostar has fared:

I just found out about these recently, very intrigued.
Johan S @ Jul 23rd 2007 5:15PM
Now to get rid of the buttons on the side and improve the browsing experience. I wonder if Archos will get into the mobile phone business.
Jordan @ Jul 23rd 2007 10:02PM
First off as stated before the 705 will take away the buttons. However, many people (including myself) find it convenient to have both options. Sometimes it is hard to do the touchscreen, especially on the web. However if you are saying instead of the 705 being the size of a football field, the size of the 605, then yes I will agree. Have the choice of touch + button, or just touch w/ a little bigger screen. Finally, to answer the last question, I hope so. In fact having the Archos w/ a video game company IE Nintendo (Wii Phone with Archos abilities, holy crap what a phone)
triniallan @ Jul 31st 2007 5:53PM
Does anyone know if the 605 will ship with a DVR station and a power adapter?
inborn evil @ Aug 15th 2007 2:05PM
nope, you have to buy the DVR station and charger separately.
this is called flexibility, you buy what you want, charger, DVR (even for a simple TV out), and codecs :(.
It would have been a blast if archos would have provided its DVR free and codecs free, but thats just a WISH.
bottom line is - the more you pay the more/better you get, and archos makes is so clear.
anyway i need a touchscreen, so i'll shell out some more bucks.
