Alienware, certainly no stranger to the high-end spec game, has further upped the ante with a recent announcement touting SSD options for three of its laptops -- the Area-51 m9750, m550, and the Aurora m9700. The gamer-centric PC manufacturer is now making the solid-state choice available as a single 32GB SSD, or a 64GB SSD RAID 0 dual configuration. In addition, the 32GB option can be coupled with a 200GB hard drive for added secondary storage. The new drives should increase battery life for the power-hungry laptops, while running faster and stabilizing your extra-important game saves and frag videos. The drives are available now, running in price from $500 for the 32GB single option, to $920 for the RAID set-up.

Hopefully this will jump start other companies to start doing this.

Uhh...I'll be interested in SSD drives when the price is sane. I mean, seriously, that 32GB drive costs more than a friggin' terrabyte. Sure, it's faster and more stable, but so is a RAID array, and the RAID is a hell of a lot cheaper. Yes, I realize you can't really put a RAID array in a laptop, but you also can't really run a computer off a lousy 64GB, so this is really only for people who wanna show off that they have a few thousand bucks to blow, and can afford some excellent external storage. Of course, I guess that pretty much describes anything made by alienware.

Yes you can.
But 32GB? Forget it.
Urza @ Jul 24th 2007 9:35PM
Well, I mean yea, I know you CAN, but the drives aren't going to be large enough to make it worth it IMO. And you can only really have two drives, and you can't easily swap them out, so there's not much point.

I can't wait for Apple to provide SSD on MacBook Pros.

Since when is 64GB lousy, no one says you have to store your entine DVD or music collection on your laptop.
I have a 40GB HDD on my current laptop, and I use it for everything. I also use an External Hard drive to hold extra data and Backup images of my "tiny little" 40GB hrd drive.
Granted The $$$ they are asking for the SSD is insame, 64GB off super quick file access is nothing to scoff at!

Who else just skips over to the prices whenever SSDs are involved?
conlan @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:51PM
But when will they let you use the SSD and any other hard drive (not just the 200GB)?

You can through the use of these things called screwdrivers and an order on NewEgg. It should not be terribly difficult to find the second HD slot, unless the cables are removed leading to it, which is certainly a possibility.
