Well, now isn't this an interesting predicament. Jay Leno, who no doubt garners quite a few viewers on his
NBC late night talk show, was casually conversing with Sandra Bullock about the film
Premonition, and while fielding questions from Mrs. Bullock about the nature of Blu-ray vs. DVD, Leno actually blurted out that BD was "like, above HD." Granted, we're sure he was simply trying to prove a point to someone who had already admitted her ignorance towards the format, but it is quite ironic that Leno's network is the main player
still refusing to support the aforementioned high-definition format. C'mon
Universal, even The Chin recognizes that Blu-ray has its benefits.
hahaha, i love the irony...
Well, technically Leno is right. Blu-ray and HD-DVD 1080p quality is better than broadcast HDTV. And obviously Blu-ray is better than DVD, but so is HD-DVD. I don't see this as a format war, just that High Definition movies are better than HDTV. Maybe it's cause I didn't watch it, but I refuse to watch anything with Sandra Bullock in it anyways... High Def or not.
Agree with him totally. Here in Puerto Rico, the only OTA HDTV signals I receive are either 480i or merely NTSC-upconverted-to-1080i (or 1080i sourced from 480i, which anyway isn't true 1080i and doesn't look like true 1080i). [Please note that I don't have a HDTV set, but instead a HDTV tuner card on my PC and a 1920x1200 monitor capable of displaying 1080i resolution thru both DVI & analog VGA.] So instead I opted to rent Blu-rays (because the only OEM hi-def PC drives released so far are BD-REs) and sure they look way much better than my local HDTV...
Why is it Universal-bad and Sony-good for doing the same thing? I'll make you a bet: If Sony agreed to go neutral, everyone else would immediately.
Lol, first Jay Leno isn't funny. Now he's just plain stupid. What's next...in 2009 he gets replac...oh wait...
i'm sorry, but where in here did leno say blu-ray was above *HD-DVD*??....
yay for pro-bluray spin....big shocker

Since when did Jay Leno become an expert on HD quality? He has about as much credibility to comment on this subject as Regis Philbin, David Letterman, and Jon Stewart.
He has credibility to millions of people. Off-hand comments from big names carry a lot of weight. It sticks in people's heads. It isn't realistic - I suspect I know more about A/V than Jay does (but he'd kick my ass with cars) - but it is a cult of personality and fame.
If you're reading this right now - you're not likely to be influenced by what Jay Leno says. But that's not the point, there are millions of people who watch him each night who aren't savvy at all and listen to his opinions.
This is old.
This is irrelevant.
This is unnecessary.
This is silly.
Kevin Murphy, Universal is bad, because they are the only ones holding out and making there be a format war to begin with. If Universal released Blu-Ray titles, Blu-Ray would have every major studio.
Blu-Ray already has Fox, Disney, and Sony exclusively, so it's not just one company stopping the end of the format war.
Not a fanboy at all, but how can you say Fox is supporting Blu-ray? They haven't released a single movie yet...
THIS IS A WEEK OLD
THIS IS A WEEK OLD
THIS IS A WEEK OLD
Whats your point? That you have a bigger penis? Christ almighty, you "OMG OLD NEWZ LOL" people need to get over yourselves.
... Because they've pledged support for BD exclusively. They have released some movies early on (like X-men 3), but soon thereafter, AACS was cracked and movies started getting posted online, so they held back for BD+. Now that BD+ was finalized a short while ago, Fox has announced new movie releases soon (I think by year end). I believe they are also helping in the promotional programs for the BDA.
Well hopefully this does add fuel to the BD fire and ends this format war sooner.
Yea i'm a BD bias, so what?
I think he's right, Blu-ray is better than DVD and HDTV broadcast but not better than HD DVD.
hahahah, ooooookay.
Well if Jay Leno said it, it must be true!
Leno has no idea what he's talking about and probably doesn't even know what's going on with the format war. He was just plugging a guest's movie. I guarantee you'll hear him spouting the same kind of crap for HD DVD every time a Heroes cast member appears to hype up the Season 1 release and the upcoming season.
Leno's been stuck in his garage so long, breathing in those fumes must have impaired his thinking.
What's interesting here is that he actually works for NBC Universal Inc. which owns Universal Studios and yet he makes a comment about Blu-Ray. I know these guys operate as separate entities but they still belong to the same parent company. No need to seed fear, but I don't like this. It might've been his personal opinion as he goes to Magnolia or Best Buy like everyone else and hears all that Blu-Ray propaganda as well. I highly doubt that you can consider him a tech fanatic. The guy is probably just listening to marketing stuff all around him about Blu-Ray this and that and just made a comment about it. I highly doubt he gives a crap about who wins.
I've never understood Leno's appeal. He's nowhere near as funny as Craig Ferguson or David Letterman. He's only capable of repeating his writer's jokes. He has no sense of improvisation and yet he's the #1 rated late night talk host. Then again, Americans think that Lohan, Hilton and Richie are newsworthy creatures. I don't get it.....
In terms of "BD, like above HD".....good morning Mr. Leno! Did you just wake up?

Sure. Now one thing's missing from Jay's list: pimp out a ride (either a hot rod or a muscle car would do fine) complete with onboard Blu-ray and 1080p LCDs...
