Wireless USB finds its way to Dell and Lenovo laptops
If you're like us, you've bopped along happily once or twice to USB.org's funky little wireless promo video, hoping that someday the wire-free utopia it promises could become a reality. Well now Lenovo and Dell have put us one step closer to the prize with two new laptops. Both the Dell Inspiron 1720 and the Lenovo ThinkPad T61 and T61p models are expected to be Wireless USB certified any day now, and ready to connect to... um, something. As the standard is just starting to see the light of day, there aren't a lot of options available unless you decide to get jiggy with a wireless router such as this Belkin hub -- but if things go as planned, in the next few years we'll all be trashing our wires and listening to really bad instrumental rock -- just like in the video you can watch after the break.

Say something of worth and be remembered in a positive way.
That NEVER goes out of style.
No one cares that you refresh engadget as fast as you can so you can be the first one to post, and thus make yourself look like an asshat.
My only question is one of overlap between WUSB, Bluetooth, and WiFi.
Much of USB's fun comes from utilizing the voltage for charging and whatnot.
maybe it sends electricity over the interweb =D
Telsa be praised! :D
It's all fun and games until someone gets hit with a flying wireless image or steps through the streaming music beam and loses an eye.
Oh sweet Jesus how long has it been that I've been waiting for wireless USB. I'd love to keep my printer in another room and maybe a few external hard drives in my closet.
Try a WiFi router with USB ports.
ah, yeah... another format war to sink my teeth into.
I had always thought that the Dell XPS 2010 had wireless usb for use with their gyration developed media center remote controll?
"Much of USB's fun comes from utilizing the voltage for charging and whatnot."
No, I wouldn't say "much", but then I remember when you would hook a printer up to a parallel port, and then later an EPP. I also remember when a full page scanner would take 10 minutes to do a full scan because of the slow epp port.
Some of USB's fun comes from the inline voltage, but not "much of"
Much of USB's fun comes from a standardized peripheral port that is faster than most devices that use it need, that you can simply plug and unplug at will and have instant access to whatever peripheral you plugged in, and the ability to expand the port availability with a "hub" device.
Indeed, but that's not the point I was making.
I was actually referring to the many USB devices out there do nothing BUT utilize the ports for power or charging.
Yeah, probably not "much", but let's not quibble over semantics.
I agree with you 100% on your point.
USB rules and I love it too!
It's just a shame us Europeans won't be getting it just yet. The French are apparently to blame :p
Just hope that lenovo doesn't take 1.5 months to deliver your laptop like they did on my x61s
the french are to blame for a lot of things.
1) being pany's.
2) being wusses.
3) being girly men.
4) being gay.
5) being anti-american.
6) just plain being morons.
and rightfully so. my 25% French blood loves Saddam and pretty shoe laces.
oh and USB rocks
