Hitachi's P42-HV01, L37-XR01 HDTVs sport removable iVDR-S
Cramming DVR functionality into an HDTV is nothing new, but Hitachi is blessing two of its newest sets with a removable iVDR-S drive (shown after the jump) in case you feel like plugging your theoretical DVR HDD into other compatible devices. Up first is the 42-inch plasma, which offers up a 1,024 x 1,080 resolution, three HDMI ports, digital audio output, a headphone jack, Ethernet, dual ten-watt speakers, an SD slot, and a silver stand in case you're not keen on hoisting this up on your wall. The 37-inch LCD TV boasts a 1,920 x 1,080 Full HD resolution, 500cd/m2 brightness, 7,000:1 contrast ratio, built-in speakers, and the same port assortment as the P42-HV01. As expected, neither of these sets will come sans a stiff premium, so look for the iVDR-S-equipped PDP to land in "late October" for ¥390,000 ($3,232), while the L37-XR01 LCD arrives a month earlier at ¥350,000 ($2,901).

That's gotta be a typo. What screen has ever been taller than it is wide??
crazyman813 @ Jul 26th 2007 1:13PM
yeah you have to be kidding me. for that kind of money it should be full hd. i just got a 46" samsung lcd, 15000:1 contrast ratio, 3 hdmi ports, and full HD for a THOUSAND dollars less than that thing. what a joke.
phoenix @ Jul 26th 2007 1:54PM
Wow, you have got to be joking? That is definitely a typo, seeing as they can do a 1920x1080 resolution a 37", obviously they can do that on a 42", not to mention that there's no way a wide screen TV would have a resolution 1024x1080.

It's the best tv for watching Willy Wonka and displaying the oompa loompas

What is the Ethernet port for?
Spuds @ Jul 26th 2007 3:13PM
Most PVR / DVR / etc have ethernet ports on them to connect to home networks for various things, but mostly so that places like TiVo can wring money out of you every month for their TV Guide thing.

Oh, I thought it was for something cool, like putting pictures of your choice on the screen instead of a screen saver, or watching media files directly off of your network. ;)
Oh well, my XBOX will continue to have a job entertaining me! :)

Dear Hitachi,
I have been burdened with having to try and sell your weird-ass pixel-ratio Plasmas since your reentry into the consumer-level plasma market in 2005.
Please stop making rectangular pixels. Either make it 1920x1080, 1366x768 or stop making them.
Also, fix your black levels, they look like shit.
Sincerely,
Jonathan

It's true, it really has a 1,024 x 1,080 pixel resolution.
There should be laws against marketing this utter bullocks.
