Acer's 4710 and 5920 Gemstones officially available in North America
Yeah, we already knew the 5920 was making its way out, but Acer has finally (read: officially) cast two new Gemstones into the North American market. As you so very well know, the 5920 offers up a 15.4-inch display and an HD DVD drive for high-definition film watching on the go, and the slightly smaller (14.1-inches for those counting) 4710 packs a Core 2 Duo processor, a Dolby-certified sound system, built-in CrystalEye webcam, and Vista Home Premium. 'Course, these two readily available machines are certainly geared toward very different budgets, and while you can snag an Aspire 4710 for a mere $599, the far more potent 5920 touts an entry fee of $1,999.

this thing has been at bestbuy for a month, i have seen it and used it
Yes, but without HD DVD. Plus, it was only $1299.99
It's ugly...
Seriously, that machine is very much lacking in the aesthetics department.

I have a 5920 for a month now and i can say i havn't had any regret. Only a few small flaws in the design, like where one of those rubbers that is in between the screen and the bottom is placed excactly above the left touchpad button, and the touch sensitive media buttons wich can be activated by a piece of paper falling onto them.
The laptop feels really solid and is gorgeous on the outside. Inside is not as white in normal lighting as on the pictures but still nice tough. Screen is nice and sharp and the built-in webcam amazed me of it's quality. The built-in speakers an sub is also notable since it gives good quality sound for a laptop. The only annoying problems i've had so far were all caused by windows vista. Overall a really good buy in my opinion. For those of you interested, its scores a 4.7 on the windows experience index out of the box. ( Mine has a t7300 intel, a nvidia 8600m GT and 2 Gb of ram) For what it's worth, I can recommend this one to you.
Cheers, Matt
The 5920G at Best Buy has been priced between $1099-1299 or so. What is the deal with the $1999 starting price mentioned here?
Is it possible to upgrade Toshiba tecra mv2 Ram?
The one I bought for $1099 had the HD DVD drive...
I personally think the machine looks good - better than anything Acer has ever rolled out. In fact it does not look like Acer at all. The picture here does not quite cut it. Go and see for yourself if you are interested.
This will probably replace my C2D MacBook Pro sometime next year.
The 5920 with HD dvd drive has been at Best Buy for over 1 month. I bought mine over 2 weeks ago for only $1249. It is a clearance item now, which means it is going to be replaced in a few weeks with a newer model. I have loved mine, as I just got 300 in HD and used the hdmi out to connect it to my 52" plasma.
I bought one of these when it was priced at $1099. Nice machine. The 8600M GT and HDDVD were big selling points, as were the 2gb memory and a decent sized hard drive.
The downside was the fact that it didn't have bluetooth. I ended up taking it back 4 hours after I bought it. I've broken enough bluetooth USB dongles and there aren't any Express Card bluetooth adapters that I could find. Petty, I know, but I use bluetooth enough to make it important.
Ended up going with a Dell Vostro 1500... similar specs but *with* bluetooth for about $800. Cheapest laptop I could find with the 8600M GT video.

Not petty at all. BT may not be the most important feature to everyone, but I think it's a pretty key feature for a serious laptop.
Seriously? Mine does have bluetooth built-in... even a button on the keyboard to enable/disable it....
