Asus' Eee PC possibly delayed
Granted, nothing was set in stone in regard to the Eee PC's release date, but those hoping to snag one before heading off to college may be out of luck. According to a user who inquired to Asus about the launch status of the diminutive machine here in the US, he was informed that current estimates show the device "hitting the market in mid-September to early-October." Unfortunately, the response also included the wee fact that specifications aren't yet "100-percent firm," and considering that the aforementioned dates are mere months away, that kind of uncertainty isn't exactly comforting.[Via Eee User, thanks Devon]

*sigh* Hopefully they will get it out in the stores before January the first. By biggest wish though is that they don't increase the price of this baby. I want to be able to pick up the 4GB version for under 300 dollars

Oh god, the internet humor!!!!
Randavance @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:03AM
Just in time for Halloween. We can dress it up like a Dell and make it play Windows ME start up noises while we trick or treat.
David H @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:36AM
Damn, I really did want to pick one up for note taking and wikipedia checking for my classroom time up at school.
Oh well, I shall just wait.
AlexP @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:28AM
I'm more curious to know what happened to the XG station.
jg @ Aug 3rd 2007 11:41AM
I second that AlexP, that thing had me all excited with DirectX 10 possibilities for my laptop, and then it disappeared from the face of the Earth.
Here my cry Engadget! More XG Station news!!

Why the "F" would you pay $300 for a 4 GB, 7in display, that dont even have a CD/DVD. When you can get triple the ammount in a reg laptop. Just look around.
I mean you buy for 300,,,,plus 40 to 60 for shipping,,,lol,,,its a waste of money.
Heres just one example below of a better deal,,,,just look around,,,forget the stupid delayed EEE PC.

When it was announced it was at a dirt cheap 200 US, and later upped to 250 US.
It is meant as an extremely portable cheap computer to do simple stuff like browse the net. Its not obviously not for people who want a regular notebook.
Also, considering you will have to pay shipping regardless of what you get, it is pretty pointless to include it in your argument.
jetpeach @ Aug 3rd 2007 7:08PM
i look at the deals on cheap laptops all the time, and every laptop that is in the sub $300 range typically weighs 5.5 lbs or more and has about 1hour 20 minutes of battery life. i want ultra portable, where carrying it with me at all times is easy and i don't need to charge it every hour...
of course, the price going up to $299 and now the delay are both definitely hurting the deal...
jwtrooper @ Aug 3rd 2007 10:52PM
Thanks Pimpin!! Been lookin for a sub-400 laptop for my trip this week... Just for email/web/dvd's. Ran out and bought one.
vrimj @ Aug 6th 2007 4:23PM
Because it will fit in my purse. I only need word processing and email, but that is more then I want to do on a blackberry. I don't want to carry around 5 lbs to to write a letter when I am out of the office, but I am not willing to spend 1k or more for a thin and light laptop either.
Shwat @ Aug 15th 2007 4:01PM
Barring all the other arguments before this one, any laptop out now that's around the same price range as this has a hard drive. The Eee PC uses a Flash drive, which means short of dropping it in a stairwell while it's on, there's little chance you'll kill the drive before you replace the PC.
zorg @ Aug 3rd 2007 1:20PM
I am sorry that you are a moron. The machine you link to weighs 5.3 lbs. and has dimensions of 1.4x9.9x13.4 inches. The EEE is 1.4x6.5x8.8 and weighs 1.96 lbs.
On the plus side I'm not going to repeat any old jokes about the disappointment women experience when they discover that your other assertions about size are unreliable.
Tomas Kapler @ Aug 3rd 2007 1:39PM
:-( definitely waiting for this. I will buy 100 pcs imediately, it is exactly what we need for our application. The advantage is simple - small form factor, no moving parts (HD), lightweight, normal OS and incredibly low price - compare it with PDA, compare it with UMPC, compare it with lightweight notebooks. There are probably plenty of people who do not need fast procesor, tons of GB and enormous display, this device would be just perfect for many things. And the anounced 10'' display version would be even better (if for still good price)
But if it will not be August 07 but again and again postponed, and if it will not be 200$ but again and again increased, they would definitely lost my interest.
Brian Sexton @ Aug 3rd 2007 1:52PM
With a backpack full of textbooks, even a few pounds saved can be much appreciated. I have considered buying a new PDA and a keyboard for use in class, but one of these looks like a much better option.

First Wii, now Eee...I can never get my hands on you, monosyllabic devices!

I'd be interested in one of these systems... if they can find the magic price point for it. I'm the owner of an old NEC MobilePro 770, and can testify to the usefulness of a computer that's smaller and lighter than most textbooks. Unfortunately, that system didn't have the juice or the operating system to run most applications... but this one does!

Has anyone thought about the Nokia n800? Add a Bluetooth keyboard, a few SDHC cards & open source programs and you have ‘EEE PC’ killer. Okay it cost $100 more, and you have to spring for the rest of the add-ons. But can you fit an EEE PC in your coat pocket?
You can buy it at Amazon for $350.00.
Shwat @ Aug 15th 2007 4:15PM
I doubt that will fit in most people's coat pockets comfortably, let along with all the add ons you would need to beat the Eee PC. All the stuff you listed would kick the price up to around $600 with shipping ($77 for each 8Gb SD card, $56 for Brando Bluetooth Keyboard). At that point, you like kind of funny carrying around what looks like a brick + pack of cards, and even sillier trying to use the tiny keyboard on a tiny display.
Eee PC does weigh about a pound more than your method though, so if you're more worried about weight and size than price and flexibility, n800 is the way to go.
Vic! @ Aug 23rd 2007 4:22PM
EEEPC is the shiznitz. I have a palm tx (which i think is also bad ass...I bought it over a sony mylo) but I would rather have this for about 50$ more and without having to pay for the bluetooth foldup KB I hope I can have this be a xmas present for myself and not have to wait till 2008. (included webcam and skype are tasty features)
Tristan Shandy @ Aug 25th 2007 1:13PM
Having the 16GB version of this plus an 8GB card in the SD card slot would be perfect for my application. I work offshore and my 15" screen laptop is just a pain in the ass to carry out there along with all my other gear. All I need it for offshore is as a charge station for my Zen Stone, something I can hook up to the internet with for instant messaging, email and light surfing and also to keep MP3s (which I would store on the 8gig sd card). This is so awesome, a dream come true!
I just hope a little bit of a bigger battery comes out, even if it is aftermarket.
Otherwise I am very excited for this to come out and would definately sell my current laptop which has very similar specs except for processing and hard drive capacity. My current lappy has 60gb HD (30 of which I use and alot of that is games I dont even play anymore and videos) and has a pentium M at 1.3 gigahertz.
Also I have never used Linux before but am excited to try it out since I have heard from so many that it is superior in stability and functionality to windows from so many people.

The Eee is for Mee!
I have a pretty good desktop and an IBM Thinkpad, that's been through a lot and is still preforming great, it's thin and good for work (note: since Lenovo took over the laptop quality has gone down).
The great thing about the Eee is the the value for money ratio. It's bordering the throwaway category. When it comes out I'm gonna buy one for the car, one for the scooter, one to keep in the john beside the toilet paper...
The flash (ssd) memory is the future, samsung has a 30GB version in their umpc, but the price is steep. The Eee will have 4-16GB wich is not much but there is a card slot so it can be extended and it also has 3 usb sockets where you can plug in a pendrive. I have a 4GB pendrive, bought it dirt cheap, and I've seen 32GB ones on the market. Of course they are not cheap, but the prices will drop rapidly. They are selling the 1-2GB pendrives like chewing gum beside the cashire at big electronic stores.
And there is always the usb hdd option if you wanna store a lot of data...
I love that the Eee will have Linux. I've had a try with Linux, and for basic stuff it's great. If you wanna do something specific you'll need a real computer anyway. But I predict all the coders will want a Eee to carry around and hack away on wifi on the streets. There's free wifi everywhere in the city...
So this is a definate buy for me, I hope it comes before x-mas so I can get one for Mom and my girlfriend. So I need hmmm 3 for me + 2 ... that's
5...
HOOK ME UP ASUS!!!
I think ASUS will hit it big with this, wouldn't be a bad idea to buy stock...

HEY everyone, I've been hanging out at eeeuser.com following this little beauty.
A couple users uploaded pictures of the interface on the Eee and I built a little Online Test Drive for the Eee.
