New Dell XPS M1730 pics pop-up

Notebook Italia has turned up even more shots of Dell's new XPS M1730 laptop, from a variety of different angles. What's very clear from the new pictures is that this model has size "issues," so if you don't like chunky lappies, stay away. Still, those specifications -- 17-inch screen, Core 2 Extreme X7800 chip, GeForce 8700M -- do look mighty tasty. Ahh, decisions, decisions.

I really don't get this. Dell is one of the world biggest companies but still fails to hire a decent designer. What angers me is that there are so many people involved in this. The designer, the assistant designers, engineers, technicians, CEO and focus group. How can they all let these ugly XPS designer through by giving it green light!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are they all blind or what?

To be fair, I think Dell has made improvements on the design front. I think the current Inspirons are an improvement over the previous generation, and the XPSM1330 has a generally nice look, although still perhaps not quite as "sexy" as the Sony Vaio SZ it most closely competes with.

But I do have to agree on this one - I am assuming these are design mockups. It seems like they're going for some sort of halftone dot look, and it just doesn't look very appealing - although I imagine in person it might look better.

Zadillo: The M1330 is indeed a sweet one. When I saw it I thought Dell was entering a new era, an era of competing against Sony, Apple and HP. But then pictures of this rather distastefully designed monster popped up on the net showing that Dell is taken a step back to their sinful habits of selling laptops with disappointing looks.

I agree that the fake textured metal/carbon fibre effect is nasty. How this was passed by the Dell industrial design team is beyond me! Obviously they'll be offering different colour's than this one if that's any consolation.
Why doesn't Dell just offer a nice magnesium metal case without any of this gimmick crap- I mean this thing ain't going to be cheap.

Take it from a Dell guy. There is not even any info on Dell's intranet on the new XPS m1730 and I HIGHLY doubt that Michael Dell would push such an ugly looking system. You can almost tell its Photoshoped from a pic of the Inspiron 1720.

Why is that? After all, the vast majority of computers Dell has made in the past are chunky and ugly, just like this one. Was Michael Dell not responsible for those? Has he suddenly acquired taste or some kind of new design skill? I don't get it.

I see that it's a full keyboard, but why does the touchpad need to be directly beneath the spacebar? I don't like how the touchpad is off-center. I'd much rather see the touchpad smack in the middle... I realize Dell isn't the only one doing this, but I've started noticing this being done for all laptops will full-size keyboards and I have to wonder... why?

Why? Because it's in the only place it can be in- directly between your hands. Take 5 seconds to think about it... if the trackpad were centered on the computer, it'd be directly under your right wrist.

That makes sense... It just seems like quite a reach if you want to use it for a computer game... WASD with your left and the touch pad with your right... But then again if you're going to game on it I suppose you'd have a mouse.

Still, the aesthetics of putting it all the way over there... I dunno, it just looks funny.

Dell XPS Techincal Support as not even seen this system or even have training for this system, that and the internal docs for the system the pix even looked photoshoped, I would wait until tech support as training or has even seen the system before buying it either that or log into http://www.dellideastorm.com/ and post your comments there cause then dell will atleast see them

This laptop doesn't really look that different from their current version, though I still prefer the current lid design. I find Dell similar to IBM's not-really-good-looking laptops but usually with coupons, you can get Dell's for ridiculously low prices - though XPS systems typically don't have as much coupons as their normal brethren. Also, it IS a 17" laptop and the parts are top notch so it is expected to be a bit thick as I'm sure the Core 2 Extreme and SLI graphics would require some pretty powerful cooling.

sure they could disguise it to look ugly for now for testing. but the back only shows 1 usb and ethernet connectors. um, yeah ok. where's the dvi out, modem, other usb ports, firewire, tv out, etc etc. surely not everything will be pushed to the side panels.

It looks like the designers went on a party after the M1330 got released, got wasted, then went home and designed this beast, then the next day, while one guy was delivering the plans, he tripped and it all fell into the paper shredder, then he tried to tape it together, now you have what you see before you.
