New Dell XPS M1730 pics pop-up
Notebook Italia has turned up even more shots of Dell's new XPS M1730 laptop, from a variety of different angles. What's very clear from the new pictures is that this model has size "issues," so if you don't like chunky lappies, stay away. Still, those specifications -- 17-inch screen, Core 2 Extreme X7800 chip, GeForce 8700M -- do look mighty tasty. Ahh, decisions, decisions.

No HDMI, but DVI instead - on the side of the unit no less? That alone makes it highly doubtful this is for real...
Another reason to buy an Apple.
OK, I've never really liked large laptops, but this... This is bordering on ridiculous! Not to mention ugly.
When we said "desktop replacement" we didn't actually mean replacing one desktop with another one of equal size.
No. For that, you'd want the XPS M2010. That thing is seriously bigger than my current desktop.
I used to own a Dell XPS M1710 Laptop, and whenever someone commented on its size I told them it was a desktop replacement model. But what the hell am I gonna tell them if I was carrying this hunk around? I'm gonna get a macbook pro instead. 1 inch thin baby!
Why on earth are engaget posting this crap, this has fake plastered all over it
Number 1 : where is the metal casing as seen on the XPS M1710, Number 2 : where is the HDMI port?
Coupled with the fact that is has no finger print scanner.
If this does work out to be dells own work then i will eat my laptop for dinner, this would be a major step back for dell and would scar the XPS range.
Anyone can build a laptop in a sandwich box
nuff said..
"Take it from a Dell guy. There is not even any info on Dell's intranet on the new XPS m1730"
That's slightly reassuring... but I don't get the Michael Dell takes a hands-on approach to design as much as, say, Steve Jobs... who doesn't actually DESIGN anything himself, I don't think, but certainly has final say on whether a design is allowed to pass to production.
Maybe Michael should "call in a solid" and have Steve vet his next gen XPS designs. I'd LOVE a 17" 1330 style. I can't imagine why that would be so terribly hard to do (although the larger screen would need more structural integrity in the screen back)
dont dell now own alienware? surely they could get the guys at alienware to sex up there machines...
Looks hot (not hot=cool but hot=warm=lap burner).
ciao
Those pics from Notebook Italia were already in the public domain, plus more description below:
Right Side: Fascia visible, Express card, 2 x USB, Kensington Lock & a unidentified slot on the base plus a WFI switcher
Left Side
DIVI & S-Video (chip-side down), 1 x USB, DVD-Rewriter, iee1394\iLink\Firewire, SD\xd\MMC, Mic\Line In\Headphones
Base
3 x Fans clearly visible ~ huge speculation on SLI capability
---------------------------------------------
word on the street is 8800x abandoned or released in November when nvidia releases G80 successor, the G92 chip,
also same spec laptop been available for some time from OEM supplier, to Rockdirect UK & Evesham UK
ciao
I work at Dell and have two of these sitting beside me. It's much better looking in person... and the bulk is due to the fact it supports RAID 0,1, SLI, a back lit keyboard and a G15 compatible display. They are actually very nice.
Any word on new graphics cards for the unit
& any ETA for shipping per chance?
thx in advance
Are the red panels on the front LCD light panels? It looks like the XPS letters on the screen back are reflective metal (like that on the bottom of the unit)... leading me to think that the red panels are LCDs that can be any colour you want (or OFF altogether).
There were a couple of discussion threads on www.dellcommunity.com about the rumoured M1730 that show up when doing a search on dell.com for "M1730", but the threads have been eradicated:

Damage control (i.e. preventing further damage to the eyes of people who lay eyes on the M1730 design?) or Rumour control (i.e.they're trying to plug the leak that lets LesDeLLiens get these photos early, by leaking fake pics to specific individuals within Dell France, and seeing which ones see the light of day).
Hmmm
Or maybe it isn't true. On www.ideastorm.com there are many posted ideas asking for Dell to deny the rumor. When pics of the then rumored XPS M1330 were posted there, they were removed but not this time. We have also noticed what appears to be photoshop error in the picture of the 1730 on the media buttons and the side USB which looks crooked. Here is a close up pic of the media buttons. http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/Groups/305/305307/folders/275922/2201614dellxpsm1730close-up-err.jpg
Today is the 29th August folks. Well they have missed the alleged 27th release.I am curious how people expect Dell to squeeze, all the power, gpu or 2, cpu, ram upto 4Gb hard drive, dvd/blu-ray, wireless, bluetooth ,etc into an M1330 case or similar, get with the physics!!! it wouldn't fit, or if it did it wouldn't work cos it would be too
hot, with insufficient ventilation.
Its is coming just not sure when.
