Sirius delights the kiddies with SCV1 backseat TV tuner
Sirius is seriously on a roll today. Clearly not content with debuting its Stiletto 2 and Sportster 4 portable receivers, the satellite powerhouse has officially announced its SCV1, aka Backseat TV, aka The Child-Silencer (our name). If you've ever been on a road-trip with a couple of bundles of joy, you'll understand how helpful this particular technology could be. The new receiver is able to grab both radio and TV signals, allowing it to pull down Nickelodeon, the Disney Channel, and Cartoon Network on TV screens in the backseat (for the joy bundles) while it streams music or talk up front (for you). The system offers a "kid friendly" remote for controlling Backseat content, while the "adult" section is operated by a separate, wired remote. The radio can also be controlled via Sirius-compatible aftermarket headunits. The SCV1 will be available in the 4th quarter of 2007, and will run you $299.99 for the unit, plus an additional $6.99 for TV service each month -- but hey -- that's a small price to pay for a quiet drive.

Wow, that's a REALLY good idea... and definitely worth the price of admission. Those with backseat dvd players for the kids will love the new content coming in on those networks for their kids...might save them on kid-friendly dvd purchases too.
Now...how much for the Playboy channel? KIDDING...

Should be Sportster 5
I was wondering how long this would take..........
I'm all for it........
now if they would do some type of "Dora on Demand" or any type of Preschool show I'll be ecstatic........lol
Brilliant!!!
I was expecting the price to be a LOT higher; kudos to Sirius.
SO, I can buy this set-up and a pair of 8" dual screen LCD displays at Wal-Mart for less than $500 OR purchase a new 2008 Chrysler Town & Country and add the same as a $2020 option???
Strange...most of us grew up taking road trips during which time we'd read, play road games or just talk with our families. When did it become necessary to keep kids entertained with worthless TV and bad movies, while also disconnecting them from the family? It'll be a cold day in hell before my kid gets to watch a anything in a car other than the road and signs.
lol.............I understand what you are saying, I was forced to nag my parents for HOURS when we would go on trips. but times have changed, I mean I didnt have a TV in My room until I got a Job and got one myself....... my daughters have a 20" LCD in there room and they are only toddlers........I already have a DVD player in my car with Screens in the Headrest.........this is just what I was waiting on.......bad TV?? as long as its educational whats bad about it?? lol
Strange...most of us grew up making telephone calls from our homes during which time we'd stay indoors. When did it become necessary to keep kids connected communication-wise, while also letting them loose from the home? It'll be a cold day in hell before my kid gets to make a phone call on anything other than a landline.
He walked uphill to school, too... Both ways.
And he LIKED it!
Seriously though, you're right. Technology sucks! That's why I'm here reading a gadget site. My car today has seat belts and airbags... Even side curtain airbags. Where do those automakers get off!? In my day, if there was an accident, we died... And we LIKED it!
movies4axe, I understand what you're saying when you make the comparison between this and cell phones. If we took the attitude that technology was destroying society and culture and family values, we wouldn't be where we are today.
But where are we today, exactly? We're in a society that's more violent, more apathetic, more desensitized than the society our parents grew up in.
Technology is great...to a point. What we need to do is determine where to draw the line. If we decide that this is acceptable, what's next? When do we decide that we've crossed a line, gone too far?
I'm not bashing your ideas or believes, nor am I siding completely with YouFaceTheTick's. I'm simply saying that we all need to think about the ramifications of technology and decide for ourselves if it suits our life, and our families lives.
And just so you're aware, I'm only 24. I've grown up throughout a very rapid period of growth in technology. I don't fear change, I just feel that we should be wary of whether it's for the better, or for the worse.
All you need now are more channels and we can ditch our cable providers...
