We think you shouldn't buy an iPod right now

We can't speak to what specific technology Cupertino's got brewing behind the scenes (we know it's OS X-based, and hear it'll use more flash), but whatever it is, we'd wager it'll be released in September or October. And not just because Apple's has taken to launching at least some new iPods every year since 2003, or admitted that it considers its iPhone business its "third", separate from its dedicated music player business (and thus wouldn't consider the iPhone its big iPod launch for 2007), or has just generally been mum about the iPod all year. It's more to do with the fact that since 2004 the company has statistically fallen into the groove of using those two months to launch new flagship iPods (probably thanks to their close-but-not-too-close proximity to the holidays).
Do we have inside dope from Apple on this one? No, none at all. Just a lot of retail reports and mounting evidence that suggests a pretty obvious conclusion. Yeah, we expect new iPods this year (seriously, why wouldn't there be?), and if we were gamblin' men we'd put our money on the September - October. Of course, we know Steve will totally read this and launch in November or December just to mess with us, but hey, as long as the masses get their music players before our annual present-opening ceremonies, everybody's happy.

It will be an iPhone without the phone. A Wi-FiPod, if you will.
SEPTEMBER 17 (or a few days later)
that's my guess for the product introduction.
like 2006 apple will make an iPod update right after the education discount deadline ends
It looks like they'd come out on September 18. Right after the back-to-school sales are done, and right before the Leopard launch. I just hope that for once Apple will stop screwing Apple retailers out of product when it comes out. I sell them part time at a non-Apple store, and it typically takes them 2-3 weeks to bother to supply us with product while their retail locations nearby all have ample supplies. Seven years ago, we ALWAYS had stock the day it was available. We just finally got two of the new iMacs in (none of the 24" size), but their stores have had them since day one.
i know by saying this i will be famed way down, but i dont think you should buy an ipod. ever.
Since when did Apple care about selling an iPod weeks before a new version ships with minor improvements? That is their whole business. I've got moronic co-workers that are on their third or fourth iPod because they always have to have the latest thing. I bought a $50 mp3 player two years ago. My additional investment? Moving from a 2GB SD card to a 4GB SD card.
Apple is king at separating hipster douchebags and their money.
OH FFS. This is the 2nd time this has happened, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Last year, I bought a 60GB 5th gen iPod, one month later the price drops by $100~ and the 5.5 gens are released. Just a few weeks ago, I bought an 80GB iPod and I'm suddenly hearing speculation of another iPod being released so soon -_-;
I'm still rockin' it out with my 20GB iPod(4G). The thing is beat up, but I'm kinda glad it is. I hate trying to protect these things from scratches and whatnot. A touch screen ipod would make me paranoid all the time!
You are so correct, it's crazy! I would have panic attacks. No Joke, Having an iPod doesn't help when your clinicly a clean freak
I drive a Dodge Stratus.
I also drive a Dodge Stratus! ...with an 80GB/5.5 to boot!
The absolute sure fire way to guarantee we get new iPods in September/October, is if I go ahead and buy an iPhone. If everyone wants to send me $2, I will buy the iPhone and then you can all benefit.
I'm just crossing my fingers that we get one of these in September or October:

Is there an upcoming Apple event that would announce this release or is it just a quick Apple Store change kind of thing?
Steve will probably give everyone an invitation again and say, "Hey, come over! We have to show you something!" Just like the new iMac's.
Maybe this time they'll make an iPod shuffle WITH A SCREEN!!!!
They do, its called a nano. :)
Something like the Sony Walkman players?
I don't mind them - I was actually going to buy one before I found out that they don't work with Macs.
Hope So, I've been looking at the U2 Edition iPod for some time now, With Video and a Steel-lokking backside, It's the sexiest iPod out right now, Besides the iPhone anyway.
I will convince CTU to get me an iPhone before this season starts. I need Google maps.
I used to love my Zen Vision M but it can't get along with Vista. C'mon ipod show me something and I'm in. The iphone sucked though and it's takin a dirt nap.
