Nikon D3 teaser ad leaked?
Is this a teaser ad for the Nikon D3, a pro-level DSLR the subject of a swirling whirlwind of rumors? If this isn't fake, this would be the third (fourth?) report we've seen pointing to the existence of such a camera. Just so you know, the text apparently points out the following specs: 3.0-inch LCD, 9 frames per second shooting, and 51 Autofocus Points. Not bad, but what's the price?

Hope it's a full frame
Olivier @ Aug 20th 2007 5:41AM
Why would you want full frame? The Canon full frame is known to be flawed. The extremities and corners have information loss that can clearly be seen if you push your contrast. The rumor is that they'll go 1.1 to not have any information loss at full. Canon is blowing smoke in your face with the full frame CMOS. We have three 5d's here and we have to crop the extremities off all the images we shoot (over 100K a year).

Olivier, maybe you need to get better lenses. Using APS-C lenses on an APS-C sensor is the same as using a full-frame lens on a full-frame sensor. The only difference could be that 'digital' wide angle lenses might be more retrofocused, but then similarly you can also use more telecentric wides on a full-frame sensor. The best thing about Canon is that you can use lenses from just about every other company via an adapter (although you need to manual focus), so you have a variety to choose from.

This is what Babelfish thinks it says: 51 frames per second, 9 inch display, USB 3.0 interface, 92.000.000 yen msrp.

seriously! Nikon does an advert using a vector and a outer glow in photoshop? erm, I think not. This is too amature.
PhilDinTempe @ Aug 19th 2007 7:58PM
Yeah, but does it have a full frame chip?
Drew @ Aug 19th 2007 8:03PM
It's not going full frame, otherwise they would release a new line of lenses before hand.
kirk @ Aug 19th 2007 9:02PM
why would nikon need to release a new line of lenses ... they've already have perfectly excellent non dx-lenses for their film cameras ...
Dan Gleckler @ Aug 19th 2007 8:04PM
Someone was probably just pissed that Nikon wasn't getting any attention after the Amazon-Canon leaked pages, and wanted people to remember Nikon is going to release some new DSLRs soon too.
M @ Aug 19th 2007 9:53PM
That is exactly what I thought, and thou I do think Nikon or anybody else would do a silhouette ad, this is not done well. Any if this is a quick “response” Nikon leak, then again maybe that is why it is so bad. More probable is that a Nikon fan did this. It is just a tool, not a new testament.

Yes, but will the rumor blend?

I read Japanese, and I'm pretty sure it's fake; I can even tell it's been done by a non-Japanese. This is what it says:
- 51-point autofocus
- 9 frames/sec
And get this:
- 920k-pixels!
Bushcat @ Aug 19th 2007 11:32PM
920k pixels on the 3-inch polysilicon TFT display.

This has been around for a month and looks too amateurish to be real.
Listening to the Nikon users predict the next announcement date for the D3 is a bit like the Jehovah's Witnesses predicting the end of the world.
But, for the sake of humouring people, here's the next five Nikon digital SLRs, in order of release:
D3H
D90
D3X
D30
D300
All with the usual cropped sensors.
What they really need is new, fixed-focal pro lenses, like a 28mm AF-S f1.4 or an 85mm AF-S VR f1.4, but there's no chance of that. They seem to have abandoned people who want to take good pictures in favour of cheap zooms.
Darnell @ Aug 19th 2007 11:43PM
One thing for certain is that there will be a D3. Everything else is just speculation. That said, I'm sure some guesses will be more on the mark than others. I personally don't think the frame rate will change--unless they can catch Canon's. Definitely a bump in resolution. Better LCD. Same pricing. Cosmetically, I think it will change little. The biggest question would have to be the sensor size. And for that answer I'd say look to Sony. They're developing a bigger sensor and if it's done on time, odds are we'll see it in the next iteration of Nikon's flagship.

Looks like Canon just beat Nikon to the punch:

Sorry to say this, Engadget is not a good place for photography related rumor. Just goto dpreview.

The fine print says it's a fake.
J. Mills @ Aug 20th 2007 6:42AM
This is about 2 or 3 months old. This has already been on the dpreview forums for ages now!!!

Do we really all feel that the D3 is the new D2xs???? Look at the Nikon text. " for sports and photojournalists " This is the new DH... right? Dont we expect more for the new D3x! Help me out! I'm just stabbing in the dark here, but I think more is still to come?
