Canon's EOS 40D and EOS 1Ds Mark III get official

Well, well, hello there Canons. After Amazon's little slip ups, Canon has finally come clean with their much anticipated EOS 40D and new EOS 1Ds Mark III DSLRs. Nothing new to tell, but it's always good to get the official word, ya know? The 10.1 megapixel EOS 40D should be on shelves in early September for $1,299 while the 21.1 megapixel 1Ds Mark III should begin shipping in November for $7,999. Plenty of shots of both DSLRs in the gallery below.
[Thanks, everyone who sent this in]

Yes!!! Finally! I was wondering if Engadget would ever post any news about the official announcement.

A picture is worth a thousand words, or 8000 bucks. That's a lot of doh! for any camera.

You obviously aren't appraised of the Hasselblad H3D-39 for the low low price of Pricing: $31,995.00

When I first read the blurb on the D40 from the Amazon pages, I thought only the sensor was weather sealed, but DP review seems to be suggesting that the body is weather sealed. If true, that would be a nice touch. Hopefully, weather sealing and easily cleaned sensors are in the future for Canon's entire DSLR lineup.
At any rate, both camera's sound pretty good...

Okay, i wanted to buy a 20D before the 30D came out, and i wanted a 30D once they were out. Well, i could never afford one, so i didn't do it... Now this baby's out and i'm not waiting any longer. - September gives me just enough time to save up and buy one at launch! :)

Can someone explain what the difference is, and perhaps why this 40D is only 10.1 MP, and the new PowerShot is 12.1? Isn't 12.1 better? Why not up the 40D to 12.1 as well, if it's cheaper cousin has 12MP as well?
PhotoHead @ Aug 20th 2007 5:44AM
Image quality. The DSLR's tend to have better sensors, and when used with good glass will give much better image results - especially with zoomed in pictures - and colour saturation than fixed lens cameras.
james @ Aug 20th 2007 6:31AM
Ahh, thanks PhotoHead. I was thinking it was something similar. I've still got an old N70 that I used back in highschool, and have been considering getting a DSLR.
MR @ Aug 20th 2007 6:47AM
I'm guessing you're comparing it to the G9. The 40D's sensor is actually about 7.5 times the size of the G9's, meaning that even if both are having the same pixel count, the 40D would allow 7.5 times more light per pixel.
In photography, light is what the camera is trying to capture. The more light it gets per pixel, the better it can resolve the brightness and color. The end result would be a higher quality image. This is especially true in indoor/low-light conditions.
Mjuboy @ Aug 20th 2007 9:03AM
I was just about to get 30D, but now, I'm definitely buying the 40D!
Eric @ Aug 20th 2007 9:36AM
When are they replacing the EOS 5? I want a full frame sensor, but not for $8K.
Darnell @ Aug 20th 2007 1:34PM
You may want to look at the 5D. Full Frame 12MP.

for those in the south east. PRP in atlanta told me that they would have a few bodies ready to rent. I believe the day rate is sub $300 as well. this camera sensor wise is better th HB other than studio shoots in my opinion. the images coming from it at 3200 are outstanding. it's worth every penny. it just really changes everything and opens up creative freedom.

Just a small point but if you read the small print on the eos 1DS mark 111 blurb is says this cannot be offered for sale until it has fcc approval does this delay the release? Presumably delay will depend on when they offered this up to the fcc. There is no mention of European release-which is normal but frustrating. It will also be twice the price in Euroope. I hope the focussing is right on such a high end product. But I am still in techno lust!

21.1MP X 14bit A/D conversion! Better take another look at Sandisk stock.
shane williams @ Aug 20th 2007 4:48PM
Well here we go, so glad I waited and didnt get the eos30d now.
One question for everyone who is in the know on lenses. I have an eos300d (rebel in n. america) and have just used the standard lens that it came with. Which do you suggest I buy with this for everyday use, I already have a canon 60m macro. THanks
JD @ Aug 20th 2007 5:26PM
I would get the 24-105 f/4L IS. About $1100.
VJH @ Aug 20th 2007 10:06PM
you also can't go wrong with a higher speed prime lens like the EF 35 f/1.4 L, or it's much cheaper cousin the EF 35 f/2. Those will give you close to a 50 mm effective focal length with the 1.6 crop factor, which is good for many situations. Plus the wider apertures of the primes generally make nice for nice portraits and non-flash pictures under low-light conditions.
