Apple's 3rd generation iPod nano revealed in "spy shots"?
Sure, we know that the photo up over there just looks like someone took a regular iPod, squashed it down, duplicated it, colorized it, and then pasted the copies in a playful circle. But what -- just what -- if you're actually looking at the 3G nano? According to 9to5Mac (and at this point only according to 9to5Mac), Apple's next move on the iPod front will be short, squat, and muted-pastel colorful. The site previously reported that the new color scheme will come in a variety of shades not dissimilar to what their "spy shot" shows, so at least their own info lines up. Other than that? No corroborating evidence from Apple, and no leaks from other sources indicating this direction... let's just say we wouldn't make any bets on this particular piece of news.
Update - We've gotten our hands on a nice, large version of the picture, and as many of our astute readers have already noted, you can clearly see a window heading which reads "nano-flower.psd" at the top of the shot, which should give further pause to anyone taking this at face value.
Update 2 (August 23) - Our machinegunnin' lawyers advised we pull the original image, but we've replaced it with a mockup. Full story here.

in a word:

I would like to let everyone know there will be a release of the new ipods before Christmas it will look very similar to the iphone and should drop one sept 4th.
Why? Because they can.
I don't get it. If this is the "new" version, similar to the iphone, then why the click-wheel?!?!
Looks like a total Zune ripoff.
Or at least the 2ng Gen Zune that Engadget (or someone else) mocked up.
http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/23/next-gen-zune-reportedly-on-track-for-holiday-season/
I know that was a joke by the way, but i think it looks like an iPod 5G rip-off!!
I think the new nano will be this myself: http://www.flickr.com/photos/83512992@N00/1020148556/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/83512992@N00/1020148556/ ...why does a touch screen iPod have a calculator?
That 150 dollar zune is looking pretty good right now. These are hideous. It looks like the nano went on a binge eating spree at krispy kreme.
Actually i think this is true, i have seen them on Sharpvision.com where if you are employed by a sharp retailer you can enter and get prizes from sharp for selling sharp products, this is on of them it also says it is 80gig, this Sharp promo doesn't end untill the end of sept and prizes don't come untill maybe dec... so maybe they will release the new Nano SOON
Why would Sharp give away a competitor's products?
and why would a nano be 80 gigs?
I smell SPAM.
I have no idea, but They are, the picture look EXACTLY the same as these ones do, and they are also giving away stuff like Garmen GPS and stuff.
I don't think so. The market is now expecting that Apple's next big iPod change will take it to touchscreen. If you had such a small device, would you willingly lose half the display side to a control surface? It looks too much like an iTamagotchi, which is what I predict it will be called if
I have a horrible feeling this is not that far off the mark you know. I've heard about a super small scroll wheel being included in the new 6gen iPod and this wheel is real small and would likely be the same unit.
This is one tiny device and it follows that nasty aluminium casing that the Nano now has. I think the iPod would benefit from a tiny tactile scroll and touch sensitive but on this it just looks stupid, or does it? I never know. Ow god, please let them keep the style of the 6gen iPod and leave this messy multicoloured gimmick stuff to the Nano.
Unless they fired Jonathan Ive, I call bull. Besides, the 5G iPod is in need of an update first, not the Nano.
look what he did to the iMac. don't trust him.
This is what would happen if MSFT were to buy Apple!
dude gates owns a ton of apple anyway lol
I have a hard time believing Apple would release a product so aesthetically unpleasant. We'll see.
Ergonomically unpleasant, as well.
There is nothing Apple-like about those pics.
Complete BS.
Actually they would, they call it the iMac... It's new.
I won't complain if they play video at 320x240 and keep the current price tag...
but yes .. they are ugly! I don't understand steve's love of everything aluminium, yes its a decent material to work with but don't ruin the ipods please!! first gen Nano was a beauty (although it got easily scratched but that can be fixed in the later models by using a more advanced poly coating) and this 2nd Nano is absolutely hideous! it looks as if someone has squashed an alimnium pipe and filled it with mp3 circuit put two plastic plugs on either sides and bob's your uncle ...
now if these 3rd gen Nano spy shots are real .. *sigh*
Wtf, the second gen Nano is faptastic, especially in red or blue.
I love my (red) 2G nano.
I think this is rather a 6G iPod than a nano... I heard something like this on one of the apple rumor website with regular iPod getting multiple color and shortened length modification. Anyway I'm gonna be waiting for touchscreen iPods...
LMAO
BS
ok i'm not even a fanboy, but apple would never do something this bad.
i think they're dope. now chicks wit nanos can watch videos too. Let me know when the touch scree 320 gb joints come out. I need those!
it's printed on paper, look at the edge on left :DD
It's called a 3D shadow... It's a part of the OS X GUI.
I'm so sorry, but when I was here, the pic was around 150x150 pixels "huge"...so I couldn't notice...now I see the control widgets, it's clear to me ;)
speaking of the shadows, they look strange to me.. the light comes from one side on the bottom three, and from another direction for the top two... i could be wrong, but i think its suspect...
For whatever reason I couldn't find a link to a full size shot.
http://www.9to5mac.com/files/Nano-spy-shot.png
Looks like someone print screened it to avoid photoshop "ducky" in hex.
"Woops! It looks like you tried to access a page that doesn't exist."
A bad mockup.
Remember all those ugly mockups we got for the Wii, Ps3, and 360?
Same thing.
Apple wouldn't make something this ugly.
But then again, Leopard is pretty bad.
i dont think Apple is this stupid.
This just cannot be true !!! I mean come on why on earth would they do such a hideous thing. Looks like a game boy to me! So not Apple.
These would be the ugliest products Apple's put out since the first gen iMacs.
This is total BS.
9to5Mac aren't the only ones reporting this, as it looks to be precisely what Think Secret described a month ago...
"Apple engineers are said to have shaved the height of the iPod while maintaining the same 320x240 resolution display and click-wheel as the current 5.5G iPod. The saved space will shrink about an inch off the device and give it proportions that in some ways more resemble a BlackBerry."
http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0707ipod.html
Yep thats just what I was thinking.
There has been talk from most if not all of the rumor sites about a "blackberry-esque" ipod.
Is this necessarly exactly what it will look like? No it could very well be a fake mock up but when the new ipods hit (not necessarly nanos) this is what I'm expecting them to look like.
To Apple - Finally, thank you biatches!
Apple's more tighten about leaked nano pictures then a virgin nun!
nano-flower.psd?
I call BS.
Surely Apple isn't trying to mimic the zune are they? But then again it is a photoshop file that they are showing
Looks like the new zune...
Well at least the older nano's will be cheaper
This is so incredibly fake. For those of you who think it's real, hit up the read link, and check out the larger version. It's not printed on paper. It's open on a computer screen (In an OS X preview window to be exact.) Filename is iPod-Flower.psd, and the shading on the edges is so terribly done, it looks like utter garbage.
For any of you who want confirmation of it's illegitimacy, just hit 'Read'. 'nuff said.
Take a look at the inner edge of the iPods. The lighting is wrong. The darker edge is always in the middle of the circle, and the shadow is always on the left. This is impossible, under any lighting condition.
Also, there is half the shadow missing on the black one.
Also, the filename is nano-flower.psd, my mistake from earlier.
The image when enlarged shows that its a screen shot of a browser which reads "nano-flower.psd" so i doubt if its real...
Look at the shadows... this is just a bad photoshop mockup. Not real.
those r actual size. theyr in a psd file and blow up to 100%. facinatingly fat.
maybe it has video
http://www.9to5mac.com/files/Nano-spy-shot.png
If you look, the file name is "Nano-flower.psd"
Last time I checked, that was photoshop's file extension.
There is nothing 'nano' about it.
TriZz you read my mind. This is a .pds file. a photoshop extension. You could view a file in PS but likely you have it in there to edit. Plus if you look at the shadow on the black one it looks like it is cut off at the bottom. I think someone slipped with the eraser.....
Fake (I hope) they look fat. Maybe they are part of the Rosie O'Donnel collection!
"let's just say we wouldn't make any bets on this particular piece of news."
Then why report it? I'm removing engaget from my RSS feeds. Majority of the news is as true as the National Enquirer in the checkout lines at US supermarkets.
I bet my iPhone that this is not a new iPod. Why would anyone who owns an IPOD get one of these??? The new ipod will have wireless and will have multi touch. Apple doesnt take steps back (at least not with their music biz)
Actually they do. When apple introduced the nano, it came out at 2 and 4 GB capacities, replacing the 4 and 6 GB mini. Some might argue that the flash (and size) is a step forward, but at the expense of 50% and 33% of capacity was pretty hard to swallow. As a matter of fact, apple takes steps backwards all the time, because it then gives them somewhere to go.
I just dont see the money in it for apple. Wheres the new functionality? Why, as an owner of a nano and an iPhone would i replace my nano for this one? I agree with you that apple does indeed take steps back sometimes, however it seems those steps pave the way for more inovations in future products. Also, the best thing about my nano is that it so easily fits in my "fifth pocket/change pocket on my jeans" if they made it wider it would no longer fit. Lets take a poll, DOES ANYONE THINK THIS IS THE REAL 3G NANO? ANYONE??
Need we mention iMovie '08 as perhaps the biggest step-back ever taken in software history?
Alt headline:
Flamebait flamebait flamebait, flamebait flamebait, "flamebait"?
fake.
Look at the top of the screenshot @ 9to5Mac (the fullsceen)
the pic is called "nano-flower.PSD"
Also, the shadows from the iPods are coming from a bunch of different sources...
Its Photoshopped people...
ahahah a bad photoshopped pic. and besides, apple is way smarter than this
REVOLUTIONARY!!!
GROUNDBREAKING!!
SPECTACULAR!!
INDUSTRY SHAKING!!
LMFAO!!
This site has a dubious track record, and they've already played this card: http://9to5mac.com/August-Aug-7-seventh-iMacs-Apple-Event-ipod-ipod-micro-nano-3450897543
Yeah ...like Apple would introduce iPods that would require new base designs ...low benefits at high cost in compatibility. This is bull.
no way is this real. it just looks like a squished video pod.
LIXO ESCROTO E NOJENTO....
PREFIRO MEU MP4 -->LOL
Yeah dude, good point. I totally agree with you.
better than the best.....!!!
hahaha 5.5G iPod video ftw.
Zune's not lookin' so bad to you now, is it?
A Nano with a 5G-esque screen and design? That may actually be a good thing, once the ads and promotion comes brainwashing us. Honestly, I think the crowd is far too critical, pessimistic, and conservative on anything new (at first, of course). But I don't believe this is Apple's way of (re-)revolutionizing their products if they make their Nanos midget 5Gs.
It would rock, but my money would be on a better redesign than just squashing it. I could see them turning the screen sideways before doing what's been shown in that picture.
The shading on the middle button all point towards the middle. If it's real, it's a very poor piece of design.
Just a gut feeling, but I don't think apple would change the form factor of the nano in such an odd direction, and I doubt they'd do it without changing the way the rest of it looks.
Yeah, I thought they would draw inspiration from the Zune of their own iPhone... because those (nearly-)squarish iPods look like they're from China...
This is a picture of the screen of a Mac. YOu can see the red yellow and green butons for clos minimis and maximize (or what wver they do on a mac) als you can see the file name is nano-flower.psd @ 100%. We know this is the extension for a photoshop file. So if it is real it could be an image that could be used in marketing thoe the low resolution would make it not good for print ads. More likley it is a fake done in Photoshop
FFAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OMG NOOOBZZZZ!
I just... kinda.. had the urge to say it :)
I believe it. The whole deal is to get video on the nano's, and they may look fat and ugly in pictures, until you actually hold one and see how tiny it is I bet most of you will quit complaining...
i think it's real. time will tell i guess.
"omg, it's a PSD, it's all fake!"
... Yeah, cuz what kind of advertisement photo like that one would ever be edited for publishing in anything other than Mac Paint, right.
iZune
notice the upside down pentagram decoration... satanism :|
It's fake. it's a PSD file, which is therefore an Adobe Photoshop file which he created it in.
If you hit the read link, you'll notice that Apple told them to take it down, and they did. Apple can only tell them to take it down if they own the design. Chew on that one. I really hope these aren't the new nanos, though. I hate the shape. Although, if they introduce a touch screen, full size iPod, I could really care less, because the nano will no longer matter.
Apple still own the basic screen-and-click-wheel iPod design, so even if someone's augmented it in PS, they've still violated the Apple IP.
I call bullshit. For one, the image of the squashed iPod has been used before by 9to5: http://9to5mac.com/August-Aug-7-seventh-iMacs-Apple-Event-ipod-ipod-micro-nano-3450897543
Also, the shadows are very erratic in their behaviour:the top iPods shadows face right, the leftmost's faces up, the black's faces inwards and the green has no shadow.
And if it were at 100% as the pic suggests, then surely it would be a lot bigger if it was a promo image made by Apple. All in all, it's a crappy mock-up.
Looks like ass. Looks like they're running out of ideas. Looks like...snoreeeeeeeeeeeeee
I understand you're in a traffic battle with all the other tech blogs out there Engadget but you should maybe start taking into consideration why a lot of your fans come to this site. Normally I look the other way when it comes to these apple speculation pieces but this one is just so blatantly bad (it's a picture of a picture on a monitor for crying out loud!) that I can't imagine what was going through your heads when you decided to post this.
It's like you're giving any Apple "news" a free ride to the front page without actually doing any research. Instead of acting as a filter for tech BS, you're now a conduit. Consider yourselves deleted from my bookmarks.
I've no idea whether this is fake or not.... BUT....
Just because it's a photo of a screen showing a Photoshop file, doesn't mean it must be fake.
This could be a photo of the screen in a design agency who are working on mock ups of potential print ads for a new iPod.
That would explain why it looks unfinished, the shadows are wrong, its in Photoshop etc. It just maybe a work-in-progress press ad...
An obvious fake. The image is of the same cropped iPod rotated and copied around a central point to produce a star pattern, then the clones were colorized. The shadows of each "iPod" are completely inconsistent with a single light source. It would take about two minutes to do this in Photoshop. Fake, faker, fakest.
I am _so_ calling shenanigans. First of all, those are fugly. They look like cheap Japanese ripoffs. A 5G Video that someone sat on vertically. Apple is about aesthetics. Style. Those things look bloated and awkward and very unlike something Apple is likely to produce. Second of all, the purpose of the Nano is to be small and light. Those things are bigger than both the 1G and 2G Nanos. Bigger than the mini, for cryin' out loud, considering total apparent surface area. Fuggeddaboudit. Apple would (or should) be embarrassed to release those.
How long until you guys get a call from Apple to take down this pic? Seems like you and Macrumors are the only 2 sites still showing this and not been harassed by the Stevetroopers.
If you think about it in terms of the width matching that of the current nano, this isn't so bad...kind of like the Zen V.
I don't know. This may be real. Look what they did to the imacs and the mac keyboards. They may be trying to appeal more to pc consumers by designing devices that are more familiar to them.
It's way too easy to make mockups of Apple-products. Simply because the design is so simple. I made an iPod Video Nano (or whatever name it'll carry) mockup in just under 15 minutes. So there's no way we will know what it'll look like until Apple wants us to know.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/11980059@N02/1212434298/
Look like the colorware versions of the current video iPod.
why would apple ask 9to5mac to take the photos down? makes you think doesn't it, but personally i want a video nano but not looking like this
Not only 9to5mac was told to take it down
