That really sketchy looking photo of the
iPod nano "phatty" from yesterday? Yeah, you can officially file that under
deceptively sketchy looking -- Apple's legal team called demanding we take the shot down, claiming ownership of the photo, and that it was "stolen" from the company. Ooook. Granted, Apple doesn't send takedowns to all confirmed-true leaks -- take the
new aluminum Mac keyboard, for example. Apple never gave us a hard time when
we broke that story. Still, Apple's legal team wouldn't be wasting its or our time if they didn't feel there was something to lose by inaction, so until further notice we're considering this the real deal. Just in case you missed it the first time, we pulled together a quick mockup of the newer, fatter nano. See? You really weren't missing anything. Expect 'em out in the
next couple of months, says we.

SERIOUSLY though... I have an 8gb Nano and I LOVE IT, but this looks like a major step in the wrong direction.
Its not common for Apple's design team to mess up, but this is definitely one example of it. I mean, why go 4:3 in this day and age? Especially when it means making your device wider in a world that can't seem to get anything TOO thin... Well, I've always felt like the nano would make perfect sense if it was just a tiny tiny bit wider than the 2g, equally as thin, and with a WIDESCREEN screen. All of you readers (naturally) agree with me in our utter disappointment with this design, I know.

This isn't necessarily confirmation. Remember Asteroid that ThinkSecret got sued over. Remember 9to5 mac is a new rumor site. Apple might be trying to kill it off in infancy. Maybe it was even a controlled leak.

That's an interesting idea. But how would we have dialed on one of those thing? I think it's a coincidence that those two items are the same size.
Just this morning I was going to point out that if it were real then the lawyers would have pulled it. Apparently Apple's iPod Division has some serious bloodhounds. They should loan some of their boys out to whoever missed that keyboard slip-up.

The mockup is pretty bad - makes the nano look far thicker - the edges dont have such a gradient. I suspect the nanos will be very thin.

IMHO: The new Apple Keyborad is not a major product, just a peripherial. The iPod Nano btw is one MAJOR stuff, needed to be WOWed when his Steveness says "Boom".

Honestly, this doesn't look that bad. If this is the same width as the nano, I think that it would be quite a hit. This coming from someone who has never owned a single ipod or apple product ever. I like it. If you look at a 2G nano there is all that wasted blank space below the screen and below the wheel. If they get rid of that and then made it a little wider so you could fit a bigger screen and watch video, it would still smaller and more functional. How is that not better than the current one?

their is better, cheaper current products that are available TODAY for your son to use/abuse.
this is going to be id i had to guess, $150-200 USD. you can get a refurbished ZVM(60gig) for that.
whether your son be 2 years old or 20, its going to get scratched unless he wraps it up in a silicone case or a hard plastic skin. and currently i havent seen to many things as resistant to scratches as the zune, and vision:m but still everything thats shiney will become not.
please people look before you buy these products, just because its on tv doesnt mean its good. i bet this is going to support pics and vid's and music only. no voice recording no FM radio/recording. and will probably only support AVI Mpeg movies and maybe a few others. but i really hope the AVI files are compressed that it supports.

Here's what I think.
They are making this new Nano a smaller version of 5g iPod that can play video for people who DON'T want the BRAND NEW 6g widescreen iPod.
That way they have video on their two main iPod lines with two choices:
1. Sexy widescreen that's like the iPhone or
2. Smaller screen and smaller product for on the run.
So people actually want to watch videos on a small Nano screen? Wow, break out the magnifying glasses!
I think the mockup and "spy" photos show the same or maybe a bit smaller screen than the 5.5g iPod. Not the same screen size as the current Nano. At least that's what I interpreted it as.
Isn't it possible they wanted them taken down because they thought that (maybe an internal digital mock-up) photo of a hideously ugly Nano might make the sleek clean apple image a little rustier? I'm sure they come up with dozens of case ideas for new iPods. I mean would you want to be associated with something like that especially if half your consumer base is hipsters for whom style is a lifestyle?

for the new nano, that would be cool if they did a sansa e200-esque thing, where the screen is tall and you rotate it to play videos and pictures. but higher res, at least if it does video.

I can't help thinking this is a fake and on the real version, you would rotate the screen and the control symbols on the dial would rotate electronically. the proportion of the dial to the empty space on the player just does not make any sense design wise... very un-apple.
That really looks bad from all directions, no way to spin-it.
In the on-going quest for shrinkage, what can you do to the nano? Make it much thinner? No, it is already quite thin. Make it less wide? No, that would make the screen smaller, and no one wants that. That only leaves you with making it shorter, which is what it looks like they did (if you believe this rumor). I for one don't think it looks bad. I know it is cool to dis things that are popular, but I'm sure that whatever design Apple comes out with for the next nano will sell plenty.
easy, create a wide screen 16:9 by turning the current nano sideways, and leave the scroll wheel in a similar position, alongside the screen.
But I'm not convinced ipods will go widescreen: apple continues to ignore major issues in the pmp market (formats, widescreen, High Res), and it has not (yet) got the widescreen content to buy.
and people say the zune is ugly. that is possibly the ugliest mp3 player i've ever seen. they could've pulled a zune and made the screen sideways so that it could be wide and the player wouldn't be fat.
I watch video on my iPod almost every day. It is obviously NOT the ultimate viewing experience, but just fine for watching TV shows or video podcasts of less than one hour. Perfect for my commute by bus.
The new Nano screen would be a bit smaller, but for shorter content, the size is acceptable.

Why couldn’t they use the same form factor as the 2G nano, but with a full front touch screen with an optical glass façade like the iPhone, so you can hold it sideways to watch 16:9 video? Seems like the screen would be much larger this way, but then probably far too expensive to produce and market at the current nano price range.

It's possible that people believing this is the next Nano could end up hurting the company on the stock end. It could have just been a mock up for the new Nano and got leaked out there and the reaction across the interwebs could affect investors.
That's nasty looking regardless of what version of yPod it is ... and even it is paper thin, its still stupid big compared to a nano or mini ... kinda defeats the purpose.

idk guys...i dont think this is the nano i think this is a video. i bet they split the video into 2 seperate cateogires--1 that is touchscreen and like 160gbs (high end) and then this one thats not touchscreen and sticks with 80gbs (lower end). i seriously doubt the nano form factor is gonna change much.
I'm still calling shenanigans. Apple's keyboard is different. That isn't their cash cow. Fake photos claiming to be real can hurt Apple in that it can harm their reputation, so they have a very good reason to issue takedown demands. I mean, look at that thing. It's hideous! It's a mockup based on a different picture, granted, but Christ on a cracker, it's ugly! I'd understand perfectly if Apple wanted to distance themselves from any rumour that this thing is real by quashing any blogs/news sites claiming that it's real.
I really hope that isn't real. I really can't see them selling very many of these fat-assed G3 nanos if it isn't. People will just stick to their G2s or G1s or buy a 6G Video.
