SteelSeries' new Ikari Professional Gaming Mouse
We've seen a couple interesting gaming mice come out of Leipzig this year, and the SteelSeries Ikari Professional Gaming mouse is right up there with Microsoft's new Sidewinders and Razer's Lachesis. The outer shell is built to accommodate the "three major gaming grips" of "Swipe, Claw, and Palm," and gamers can select their choice of models: a high-res optical version for FPS gamers, or a laser system for RPS and MMO addicts. Both feature switchable DPI settings and five programmable buttons, with a proprietary 500MHz transmitter to reduce any lag or interference. No word on price, but SteelSeries says these'll be out in Q4, so you gamers had better start saving your pennies.

SteelSeries has a good track record with gamers. From what I've heard, their mouse pads are superb. It will be interesting to see how good their mouse is. Can a mouse pad company build a decent mouse?
On another note, SteelSeries' competitor Icemat has a secret product they're developing. Maybe they too are working on a mouse perhaps? Fill us in Engadget, please!

Steel and Icemat are owned by the same company or one by the other.
The Two brands 'Steel Series' and 'Icemat' are owned by the same company 'Soft Trading' http://www.softtrading.info/
I didn't know that. Thanks for filling me in.
*Professional* Gaming?
you bet me to it
Have you been living under a rock for say...the past 9 years?
Professional gaming does exist...granted you have to throw your life away to do it, but it does exist. You also have to be pretty quick on your feet and brain (...and hands...eyes, body in general), so a lot of people don't make the cut.
I'm sure if you look hard enough there are professional masturbators also.
(no pun intended)
Wow, gaming mice?? Just another way for people to get robbed of their hard worked money.
I have a wireless Microsoft keyboard/mouse combo ("Wireless Optical Desktop : Comfort edition). I picked it up for about 50 dollars during a sale, battery life excedes 6 months, it is very comfortabe, performant and precise with lots of features..
You computer gamers just have to realize that "gaming consoles" are the ones designed for gaming. Why pay $800 for a 8800 GTX + Mobo + CPU + Ram + "Gaming Mice" for nothing more.
Jeez, pick up a wii/360/ps3 (well, maybe not PS3) for a couple bills and just plug and play...
"Well I guess it all started the first time I went through the second grade. I caught my reflection in a spoon while I was eating my cereal, and I remember thinking "wow, you're ridiculously good looking, maybe you could do that for a career."
Do what for a career?
Be professionally good looking."
What, FPS gamers can't have a laser mouse, too?
how does engadget get their hands on these news?
RPS?
does he mean rpg and rts or is an error...
MY BRAIN!
Shouldn't it be the Ikari Warrior?
lol, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the headline.
But then it would be a dual joystick setup not a mouse, Ikari Warriors FTW
Also I like how they have 3 grips....none for lefties... ;(
I'm still waiting *cry*
Shut up, freak! Get back in your cage or it's no gruel for you tonight!
Buy a Razer Copperhead mouse
Lefties are a myth.
Yeah, Razer is the only company that makes high-end ambidextrous gaming mice. Logitech, Microsoft, and etc., only make their top gaming mice in ergonomic right-hand models, alienating 15% of gamers. At one point, Logitech did make the mx610 in a lefty version, but it's not really a gaming mouse. For lefties, the Razer Copperhead (or the new Lachesis when it comes out) is the way to go.
ok thanks!!!
another example is that new logitech mouse that's coming soon, it's ultra modable, and has 3 grips, nothing for lefties.. I guess I'll have to use a raser ;) thanks for info!
A gaming mouse that doesn't look silly or have LED lights all over it? That's craziness! For that reason, I'd like one.
Looks much slicker than the other gaming monstrosities. Too bad its wired, I can never go back to wires, trying manage cord slack drives me insane.
Why Ikari? I hope this mouse doesn't perform as bad as one of its namesakes - nobody wants a mouse which doesn't move in the middle of a critical game saying "there is nothing I can do"...
This was an Evangelion reference to those who didn't get it.
500mhz transmitter? I see a cord in the picture.
So there will be a wired and wireless version?
...just because a frequency is mentioned doesn't mean it's wireless. You can transmit 500MHz waves too you know. How do you think your processor works that fast -- the clock is just a pulse train at whatever frequency it needs to be. That's one of the reasons overclocking doesn't always work so well; if your oscillator can't keep up.
500MHz waves in a conductor*
Think the telephone system, Ethernet (wired), DSL, these are all transmitting in a medium that is not air at specific frequencies.
Certainly a possibility, and not one that I had considered.
"500mhz transmitter to reduce lag or interference" just sounds like a wireless device, especially considering that lag and interference are the major problems that affect such devices.
Steelseries works with alot of pro gaming teams to make these products top of the line. I have loved every single product I've bought from them and when my headset messed up they gave me the brand new version for free.
Yum!
