Sony adds WWAN to select SZ6 / TZ20 VAIO laptops
Those scouting a sexy new VAIO may be lured a tad closer to the SZ6- and TZ20-series, as Sony has recently announced that select models in both lineups will boast integrated WWAN capability. Dubbed everywair, the specially equipped lappies will reportedly be able to cruise the HSDPA highway thanks to twin diversity antennas "concealed in the lid," which purportedly "boost signal quality in marginal areas." Additionally, the SIM card will be inserted "directly into the laptop itself," and the included VAIO Smart Network software should make managing your connections a lesson in simplicity. Oh, and for those wondering, current models should hum along at a maximum of 3.6Mbps, but a firmware upgrade will boost that figure to 7.2Mbps "when the service becomes available."

Er antennas concealed in the lid when you can plainly see that one on the outside? Unless I'm missing something...
ha nah, thats for playing slots :-)
That's an old photo from the SZ5 in the US which had it externally.
I'm surprised this didn't appear hear sooner because I ordered a TZ21VN/X in my local Sony Centre in England last Thursday. They said to expect it mid-late Sept.
Is this WWAN service available in the US? I am waiting for the SZ6 with Sprint EVDO Rev A to become available (I am already a aSprint customer and find the network very reliable).
I don't know about the SZ, but the TZ in North America has Sprint's EVDO WWAN but when it launched in Europe, it never had WWAN so its just been refreshed there to have it.
I know the older SZs in North America used Cingular's EDGE, I hope they've finally changed that.
this is crap. Dell D820 has had it for over a year with the SIM being inserted under the battery.
@ sdevera,
even the cingular EDGE based Vaio SZ 3x/4x had direct sim card placed under the battery as well. Just now it appears they went WWAN and are making the antenna internal
Any ideas on when the SZ6 is coming out in the UK?
I am tempted to go for the M1330 but I'm not sure if I should wait for the SZ..especially with the waiting list for the Dell.
Is this unlocked? More importantly, is it global?
Anybody know whether the US SZ laptops, SZ680 and such with integrated wwan broadband also work on the European networks( 3G - UMTS / HSDPA) or do they ONLY work on America's Sprint Broad EVDO network?
Also, I was wondering whether existing SZ4 or SZ5 laptops, or an SZ6 bought in the States without an integrated WWAN module, have the option of upgrading to a WWAN module once it comes out (3G / UMTS HSPDA).
I ordered an SZ680CTO from the States without the integrated broadband but would like to add integrated 3G should this be possible here in Europe.
Has anyone figured out where the SIM card slot on Vaio TZ is? Maybe one could try with a European SIM card, e.g. T-Mobile?
