Sanyo's Xacti DMX-HD1000: the world's smallest 1080i camcorder
We like giving Sanyo heaps of grief over their boxy gear from time to time. But make no mistake, they've nailed it with their Xacti series of solid state camcorders. Meet the DMX-HD1000, their first to record at full, 1,920 x 1,080 resolution video using the HD/MPEG-4 AVC codec. It features the ability to shoot 8 megapixel stills via its 1/2.5-inch CMOS sensor, a 10x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD, HDMI-out, and the ability to record direct to SD/SDHC cards for up to 2 hours at a charge. That's plenty of juice since an 8GB SDHC card will only hold about 1 hour and 25 minutes of Full HD recordings. All this in an itty-bitty pistol grip shooter which Sanyo claims is the world's smallest at this resolution. Available in Japan starting mid September for about ¥120,000 or about $1,000.

hahahha... FIRST!
Anyway, this camera sucks. It's not just about resolution... framerate counts as well.
That's true about framerate, but it looks to me like its 30FPS at 1080p...
That's true about framerate, but it looks to me like this is 30FPS at 1080p...
The main quality indicators for AVCHD video are resolution and bitrate. Let's assume it has a reasonable framerate. Now, the AVCHD format goes up to 25 Mbps (same as the HDV spec), but almost all AVCHD camcorders record at a lower bitrate. That is the main reason why current AVCHD camcorders produce lower quality video than HDV. For example, some of Sony's AVCHD camcorders record at 12 Mbps and others at 17 Mbps. So, does anyone know the bitrate of this new Sanyo AVCHD? That will be one of the best indicators of the video quality as the 1920x1080p resolution really needs all of that 25 Mbps maximum...
London,
Bitrate for this camera is 12Mbps
I guess all matter would be the framerate which is under question.

With the display tucked away this cam looks sooooo similar to the one used in Kubrick's 2001 by the press photographer at the meeting on the moon.
sexytime.
From a wee bit of really simple math, it seems the camera records at around 12.8mbps. This includes audio. So probably similair quality to the sony ones.
If this Sanyo's bitrate really is around 13Mbps, then that's pretty poor for 1920x1080p. I'd rather have better quality using a lower resolution with that bitrate. Note that Sony's AVCHD camcorders have lower resolution to match the lower bitrate. Just upping the AVCHD resolution without also upping the bitrate is just like increasing JPEG resolution without increasing the filesize. Just another form of digital zoom...
Did any of you guys talking about frame/bit rate actually think to click the read link? It clearly states "60field/s 12Mbps", which is ample framerate and typical bitrate. The only ambiguity is whether by "fields" they mean it's interlaced (1080i) so the effective framerate is half that, though when they're claiming "full HD" it should really be 1080p.
12 Mbps may be a typical bitrate, but that has historically been for 1440x1080i resolution. In this case, Sanyo is squeezing a much larger 1920x1080p resolution into that same bitrate. A pity as the AVCHD spec goes up to 25 Mbps...
It looks like those flashlights they used in star trek TNG.
Looks like the camera used during the press event in Kubricks 2001.
Maybe it is using h.264 for the compression? Hence the low bitrate but high res
It's going to rival the Samsung SC-X300 a friend of mine bought in smallishness =P

Cool. Looks like a great little form factor. Reminds me of a futuristic version of an old super 8 camera. But I question their choice of placement for the headphone jack.
only if they get the lowlight and quality of indoor shots under control. the last few iterations(HD1,HD1A, HD2) apparently sucked.
This thing looks awesome. On the outside. Sadly, the Xacti's have all fallen short in the area of image quality (purportedly why people buy cameras in the first place), and I have a hard time believing they've suddenly hit the nail on the head.
But if you're the type to shoot video and never watch it, this could be the cam for you!
I own an Xacti 6MP camera, and I must agree that the flash kinda sucks, and the indoor shots aren't the greatest, but something has got to be said about the small size and portability which allows me to carry the camera with me in my pocket anywhere I go... This allows me to take 10 times the amount of pictures I would have ever taken with my older olympus digital camera which was a monstrosity to fit in my pocket. (this isnt even taking into consideration its awesome video capabilities).
My only regret isnt purchasing this camera a few years earlier so I could have captured more drunken college memories with it...
This thing looks great.
Beats the crap of all the tap or hard drive based models' sizes.
Sure it may be not as good as the bigger cousins from the big names, but can you fit in you pocket?
I bought and still have the first generation Xacti which I love! You have to take three factors into consideration - quality (both camera and images), size and cost.
ican say i have had every camera sanyo has made since the c5 i didnt like the c5 simply because of the auto focus mode noise and the c6 was much better than the 5 and had a 6 megi pixil snap shot to the c5 being a 5 meg . then i got the hd2 skipped the hd1 because of reviews the hd2 was very good and expecially the standard video in the best quality the hd was great as well in the hd2 . i use the c6 and the hd2 on my bicycle handle bars with a clamp from a muffler with a 1/4 bolt sticking up and video the whole ride . i went with the hd 1000 does great video standard and hd very pleased . but the 1000 is larger and gets alot of video noise when riding i never got that with the c6 or hd2 . i video everything all the time . ive put it in shopping carts and taped the entire shopping experience . i just love the convience of the small camera . for what you get on such a small camera its simply the best for the money and size. it blows my mind that when i look at an sd card and i say where does the video fit just dosent make sense to me to think i can record 125 minutes of 1080 i on a 8 gb sd card. for convience of the small camera its the best ! you could do the video for cnn news with it no one would ever know its so small! i highly recomend it the battery life is great to . what i dont like is you really have no way to save hd except to hard drive . hd burnners are too far behind the hd tvs and cameras . so i just save the files to hard drive and transfer to dvd till i can save the hd to a dvd hd disc . so the only way you can see the hd rite now is thru the camera .
