Casio brings world's fastest 60fps, 6 megapixel camera/camcorder to IFA
Ok, here we go. Casio has a world's first prototype shooter at IFA sporting what must be Sony's 60fps 1/1.8-inch CMOS sensor. Right, bursting sixty 6 megapixel frames per second for what should be a resolution in the ballpark of 2921 x 2184. It'll even go 300fps if you want to scale things back to VGA video. The prototype features a 12x optical zoom and 2.8-inch LCD in a beefy piece of kit measuring in at 127.5 x 79.5 x 130.0-mm / 650-grams. What's also notable is what's missing from the specs: the storage utilized by this cam. A pretty serious omission when you think about the transfer speeds required to move (and store) that much data.

Something I have been looking for ... Release date ??
Joe @ Aug 31st 2007 7:14AM
I hope there's lots of options. I'm not going to lie, there are lots of times I wish I could play with 300 fps, but there are times where I wish my DSLR did something like 20 fps burst mode, not for video but to make sure I got the shot.

Soon, you will see the merge of VIDEO capture and still DSLR imaging - all in one unit!
Wait...they have that already - it's called Sony handycam - model with built in 6mp camera and miniDV recorder!

@canon shooter:
Rite.. sony camcorder can't do 60Fps 'AND' 6 megapixel, moron.. only 'OR'
Louis @ Aug 31st 2007 6:18AM
So this can take 6mp stills at 60fps until it fills up whatever storage it uses? What would that be 1mb per 6mp image, 60mb a second? wow.
Louis @ Aug 31st 2007 6:18AM
ops stand corrected:
"output this resolution at 60 frames per second (a data rate of around 384 megapixels per second)."
Andrew Cummings @ Aug 31st 2007 6:24AM
This better bloody well do high speed movies. I guess you could stick them together but it would be nice if it did it for you.
kaztm @ Aug 31st 2007 6:40AM
It does 300fps MotionJPEG in VGA. Is that high speed enough for you?
HexBox @ Aug 31st 2007 7:03AM
Let's hope the battery life isn't measured in seconds.

60 fps ! Thats awesome, the day is not far when the boundary between DSLR and Point and Shoot model merge.
Blake @ Aug 31st 2007 7:36AM
I bet it has an ESATA port.

Looks like MONO sound capture to me. Bleh.
I use a Canon S2IS {stereo sound capture} and a manual focus ring is probably my most sought after feature that I'm waiting for before I upgrade.
All this video muscle and MONO sound capture?! WTF?
Come on Casio, you've got a few months before manufacturing ramps up, let's see some stereo sound capture!

Right, good luck finding a memory card to keep up with that speed. Even the Ducati Edition Sandisk CF cards do only 45 MB/sec. That speed could handle maybe 7-8 6.0 MP RAW images per second at most, by my calculations. So, unless Casio has some kind of secretive new memory card tech they will also unveil, you will never get to SEE 60 fps.
coolant8 @ Aug 31st 2007 2:33PM
Maybe you do get to see it, it will be so highly compressed that VGA image look sharper than the 6MP image.
Noli @ Aug 31st 2007 8:14PM
@Silverfrog
Yeah but you're assuming it saves video in RAW which is ridiculous. My panasonic lumix (8MP) can record 848 x 480 video (0.4 megapixels) at 1.55 Mb/sec. The video image will save the frames as jpeg or something even more compressed. Multiply that up to 6 MP (x14.7) brings 22 Mb per sec which your Ducati Sandisk can handle easily. I agree that it's ridiculous amount of resolution and ridiculous amounts of storage but it may just be possible. I'm sceptical too but will keep an open mind until it's out.

I was wondering when someone was going to bring up not having a card that can keep up. (maybe) It had better have a hellagood buffer as well. I've only dealt with Casio PS so far, and it's near magic to get a clear picture off of one of those, regardless of settings. Hopefully this model doesn't suffer the same shortcomings. It would really suck to have a camera that can shoot at 60fps and every one of them blurry.
