Packard Bell's EasyNote XS 7-inch laptop
Just in case you hadn't noticed, there's a real bumper crop of super-tiny 7-inch laptops this year, and it looks like Packard Bell didn't want to miss out on the fun. The new EasyNote XS eschews the Linux of some of its peers for some vanilla XP Home action, and runs on a VIA C7-M Ultra Mobile Platform. There's a VGA webcam, built-in WiFi, 4-in-1 card reader, 30GB HDD and even a friendly 1GB of RAM. Packard Bell expects this 1.2-inch, 2 pound unit to get 3 hours of battery with WiFi on, and hopes to hit the UK market by the end of the year. Hopefully the price is right.

yes lets hope.

That's a beautiful looking computer but I doubt it's going to be sub $300. It jind of puts Palm's folio to shame.

Ok, it says coming out in uk end of year, but I'm a student wanting a laptop for uni, but also, ever since i saw the concept by VIA i wanted one, do I wait, or buy a dell or something now? argghh. choices

in my opinion, not ideal for study use...personally id rather have a larger screen so that I can use it for longer without squinting to read text. When i say larger, only perhaps 12/14 inches, so it's still portable.
Invisiblemoose @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:16PM
I still think the Eee looks most promising...

If they actually ship it... they were supposed to begin selling it in late august.

Bring back updated Psion Series 5 with all the bells and whistles, I love em. Portable with a tiny, tiny 'p'. How can these designers do a screen and keyboard so badly, 'it's a screen and keyboard' that’s all we want, all screen one side and all keyboard the other, simple.
mp3elv @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:26PM
this looks like the EEE laptop with 4gb of flash, and 256mb of ram i wonder if they are the same just with a change in some parts cos looks the same architecture and also the small screen with the piece of plastic to the side etc
ottovds @ Sep 3rd 2007 2:43PM
3h battery?
that's nothing
and that for an Ultra Portable
it had to be at least the double!
RubberBinder @ Sep 3rd 2007 4:11PM
An ultraportable should get at least 5 hours of battery life.
pikkoz @ Nov 8th 2007 2:37PM
"3 hours of battery with WiFi on" which part of "with WiFi ON" you don't get ,guys?
mattydread @ Sep 3rd 2007 3:32PM
Packard Bell is still in business!?!
Steve Paine @ Sep 3rd 2007 4:07PM
It will be 600 Euro in Europe.
Expect the everex version (slightly different looking but based on the same reference design) to hit at between 600 and 700 dollars.

Oh you just buy me this one and i'll give you my 12" hp tochscreen laptop in return. It's just 3 months old and would kill AND give my laptop for this one! :P
Blah @ Sep 3rd 2007 8:54PM
Wow PB must have been working on a big budget. I bet it cost a bundle to bring designers all the way from 1987.
typicalgmer @ Sep 3rd 2007 9:22PM
i hate that laptops can't last more than like 3-5 hours without being plugged in.
Xiao Ba @ Sep 4th 2007 1:51AM
I would like to know the battery lives of these new 7inchers. As a college student, I think it may work out well to have one of these babies to carry around to take notes in. I have relatively small hands so I don't think I will have much of a problem with hand cramps. Paired with a desktop, it's not a bad setup or a bad deal.
Xiao Ba @ Sep 4th 2007 1:53AM
oh, I totally skipped that part about a 3 hour battery life. So much for the above idea...
raymond conklin II @ Sep 4th 2007 4:52PM
Pretty soon laptops will be the size of that nasty beeper we all threw at the wall back in the day, nanotops,lol.....
shawnmos @ Sep 5th 2007 1:51AM
