With the E-ink, I'm not sure how good backlight will be. The E-ink is almost identical to paper to read, for the previous E-reader Sony used to sell normal clip-on LED lights that worked great. Bought mine from Barnes & Noble for like $9, which is the same one that I use for paper books, works great.
IMO, the biggest issue is the price. Sony needs to sell these things for $149 or less to make it a viable platform. Its a good device, and lot of the old issues (like refresh times) seem to be addressed, but price clearly isn't (I guess the E-ink is still very expensive).
