Sony's Rolly speakerbot on video
If you don't get nauseated by watching things spin round and round, over and over, you might wanna check out Akihabara News' HD video of Sony's upcoming Rolly speakerbot performing its limited suite of dance moves (embedded after the break), which should give you a good sense of whether or not you'll want to save up a little more money and go with Miuro the robotic iPod dock instead.

I had a similar thought when i saw most of these "why?" comments.
The flaws of this speculation are two:
- Apple has released duds, and people have in fact not reacted well to them (I mean hell, watch people react bad to a PRICE CUT, maybe Apple customers are not so indiscriminate after all).
- Apple would never release this poor thing as iRolly since they know better.
only good thing about this rollout are the models.
You've got to be kidding!
They look like old and busted, second-string tech models.
SONY is even cutting corners in this department.
.....proving that ur taste in females is weaker than ur taste in crazy dancing robots.
They're not exactly the best-looking models I've ever seen, but I'll take one for the Endgadget team and volunteer to "hit it".
it's so you keep your eyes off the models and on the rolling—thing!
"only good thing about this rollout are the models."
The catch here is they'd sell you anything in the photo but the models. But you're welcome to look at the photo as much as you want.
1st It can't play Doom...
2nd Anyone else besides me feel like acquiring a potato launcher and watching that thing try to dance in the sky??
3rd It still can't play Doom...
I'm eager to know if it blends
Maybe the sony hate is warranted, this thing is completely useless. Shouldn't they be trying to fend off HD-DVD or trying to find people to write games for the PS3 as opposed to spending valuable time and resources on worthless gadgets for japTeenie-Bopper market? What would happen if it rolled itself off the table onto a hard surface...I can see little speaker covers breaking off nearly instantaneously.
Yeah, because it's good business to put all your eggs in one basket per say and only concentrate on one thing.
*Yawn*
Try again Sony. I'm bored after just watching half of the videos.
Not going to sell, toss into the Betamax bin. Booorring.
I can't imagine being entertained by this for more than 5 minutes. 10 if you're a kid, 20 for toddlers.
glancing at the specs http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Qnavi/Detail/SEP-10BT.html
I'd say its doomed due to its used of the notriously awful SonicStage.... though its interesting that it seems to accept MP3, ATRAC, and AAC audio files.
Unless the vids are heavily stage-managed, it does seem to do a damn good job of matching beats, spotting musical-breaks, etc...
a solution in search of a problem?
hours of fun if you have a cat.
It's one of the most idiotic things I've seen Sony produce...er... except rootkits/DRM...and the price of the PS3 ...and it's own memory sticks ...and it's defective cameras and batteries... and ATRAC and minidiscs ...and MP3 Walkmans ...and...
To be fair, the PS1 and Walkman were some of the best consumer products ever... still it does a lot of brainfarts. It seems to be overambitious, which perhaps isn't a bad fault to have, but a folly like the Rolly doesn't seem to make much financial sense. At least it's Blu-Ray Discs seem likely not to be another Betamax...
This thing makes me remember the HALO from the Gundam series anime. :)
I noticed that they never used the color red in the lights.
Guess they're trying to avoid dual RRoD's.
WOW!...to see it in action, really begs the question...WHAT IS THE POINT! Is this Sony's way of telling us to "clean your desk off or we'll start kicking papers on the floor." They rolled out a dud! Not that I have an opinion.
OOoh it's small and neon and dances and wreaks of desperation!
If it can be hacked it will make a great toy, if it only works the way sony wants it to work, it will be lame. Let's hope for the former, then it would be a realy great toy for geeks.
I wonder how fast it can go :)

I say you attach some sort of long ass handel of somesort to the center of the Rolly. Then get yourself a Zeno. Mount that Zeno on top of the Rolly and what do you got...
Robot *Segway/Jousting* Wars!
Well, it seems somebody is trying to make a quick buck on this. Rollyshop.com owners asking $50,000 for the domain! Even if this was wildly successul, thats a bit much, no?
That was incredibly boring. I stopped watching after about 10 seconds.
When viewing the video all I could think of was a crazy Beastie Boys music video staring Adrock.
You would think they would use better looking asian girls to market their products. Samsung girls are always the best!!!
What a colossal waste of resources. Why in the hell would anyone pay $350(ish) for a 1GB music player with a stupid gimmick like this.
Utterly pointless.
The only way I would ever be caught with one of these is if it was a gift, and I couldn't return it. I would be to embarrassed to list it on eBay.
Yes, people, it may seem kind of stupid. However, they might be trying to tap into the drug-users' market. Just think, you can stare at this thing instead of having one of your friends spin glowsticks around like a retard.
It's a cute novelty item, but that's it. If it were below the $70 mark, it might attract a few buyers, but the idea of a novelty item is to keep it relatively cheap. Personally, I've never felt the need to worry that my speakers are going to throw themselves off high places or knock something over in an effort to impress me. That job is reserved for kids and pets. And besides, with all the motors in this thing, you'd be sacrificing battery life just to see your speakers do something you should be doing. Get your ass up and dance!
Korean models > Jap models. Koreans are the most beautiful asians on the planet. The Japanese really should start importing Korean models.
I found this other video that shows of the interface, its actually kind of cool.

Do us a favour, SONY haters.
If this was called the iRolly you'd all be wetting your knickers right now and considering which of your Star Wars toys - sorry, memorabilia - you could sell in order to be able to buy one.
I always laugh when I see the usual Betamax swipe from clearly anti-Sony fanboys.
Betamax was far better - and no more proprietary - than VHS (both were backed by a single maufacturer) but the latter succeeded by virtue of Seagram's movie catalogue. (Indeed, the loss of the former for that reason led Sony to enter the content business themselves.) Tech fans should actually lament the loss of Betamax given that VHS was so utterly crap. Industry folk and real technicians certainly do - and some still use it to this day. Sony only stopped making Betamax machines a couple or three years ago.
So, change the record, or continue looking like a d*ck simply driven by hatred for a company (what's that about; doing much for you is it?) rather than an appreciation of technology.
I like it, granted I may not go out and buy it but it shows that Sony can be a fun company and is still willing to develop things that arent so serious like PS3's and TV's. I probably cant even imagine the kind of things their technicians get to play with, it gets me excited just thinking about it. I am a geek and yes I understand why people would ask why, but I ask - why not?
plz-plz say the name of first song!!

i want one for me and some to give to my friends..;but the manual and software is only in japanese ....?....that is not verry clever of sony !!
englisch can sale al over the world (i have orderd many stuff from japan to ship to belgium....but this i can't just for the stuppid mistake off the marketing of sony ???!!!
Let me start off by saying that Japan has a COMPLETELY different fascination & culture than than America. Second, also realize that this isn't supposed to BE a party, just use it to have some fun conversations AT a party!
Follow this link to see a little more functionality about it:http://www.sony.jp/products/Consumer/rolly/index2.html
It is the Sony Japan site so yes, it's in japanese... But down on the left is a little "Rolly Image Movie" -just click PLAY and watch it. It had a few functions that I actually thought were pretty cool and not just toy-ish.
