iPod Classic firmware update improves Cover Flow performance
Apple has already seen fit to give the new iPod Classics a firmware update, which according to the company does nothing but fix bugs. Members of iLounge's forum know otherwise, with members reporting that it improves previously sluggish menu and CoverFlow performance: one of the few gripes with the updated iPod. Notice anything else? Let loose in the comments.P.S. Sick of all the fruit-related news? Don't moan, just check this out.
[Thanks, Julian]

The update makes my iPod classic vibrate when a phone rings.
The firmware update makes me want to not buy songs from iTunes.
Thanks for posting this Engadget. I had no idea the update was available. PC mongers can just skip over Apple related articles so we don't have to soil out eyes by reading their elementary school quips.
Perhaps they should just put out a firmware update that warns consumers to wait for the next revision of this extremely-rushed, poorly-coordinated release of iPods before slapping down their cold, hard cash.
I mean, honestly, other than "wow, it LOOKS so pretty", I've heard far more bad things about these new iPods than good - even from otherwise iFanboys - and that's disappointing coming from the King of Detail-Oriented Products. (I've gone from wanting an new iPod on Day 1 to not wanting one on Day 10.)

SCREW YOU SPAMMER!
I DONT WANT UR DAMN "FREE" iPOD!

hi
can someone tell me the url for the new ipod classic firmware update please?
ta
Before the firmware update, my 160GB iPod Classic seemed to have an issue where its battery would run down quickly if you put it into sleep mode and left it alone for several hours--a couple of times I got up in the morning after leaving it unplugged all night (and not playing), and there'd be no charge left. From what I can tell, the firmware update seems to have fixed it. Maybe it was just a bug with the way it read the battery.
The iPod Camera Connector does not work with the new iPod Classic. This makes me very upset as I purchased the 160 to use as for on-the-go photo storage, and now when I plug in the accessory, it shows "This accessory is not supported"
Seems like Linux isn't the only thing they took away from the iPod with the 'new' version...
Here's what I've seen after applying the new update to my 160gb classic:
First of all, the click wheel seems more responsive and accurate. I used to have issues scrolling through my artists list, in that I couldn't make the letters pop up to quickly skip to them, but it seems they lowered the minimum threshold speed required to do so. Excellent.
Cover flow is WAAAAAAY better now. It pre-loads the album art before you see it, not while looking at it, and it doesn't lag when you click on the albums. It /does/ however seem like they've turned down the cover flow antialiasing a bit, because I'm noticing a lot more jaggies on the albums. Whatever though, I'm just glad it works.
The P is still at the top while syncing if you have time in title turned on.
It seems more responsive when syncing, but that may be psychosomatic wishful thinking.
I have the universal dock, and the remote, and it now remembers the previous volume setting from last time I plugged it into the dock. This volume setting is independent of the one displayed on the ipod's screen, but this is a good thing because I no longer have to worry about getting an earful of music at full volume when I plug it in.
Finally, I no longer have to enable disk mode to enable the tv out selection in the menu.
Now if they would just update it so you could control the interface with the remote, and maybe display the interface on your television, it would be perfect. I suppose that would cut into their appletv sales though.
I just want them to give me an option to turn off that screensaver they put in. I like to be able to look down at my iPod and see what's playing, not see a giant battery life indicator and a clock.
Also, I want to be able to use my games again.
Otherwise, yes, coverflow and menu responsiveness does seem improved.
New firmware changes battery charging logo. Instead of having an image of the battery level slowly going up as it charges, this one looks more like previous charge icons with a lightning bolt through the middle of a battery that fills up from left to rigt every couple of seconds.
I update the software yesterday and noticed that many of my albums have now disappeared entirely from cover flow yet still appear in the main listing. Anyone else had this? I have getting on for 25000 files on now and wondered if there is a limit to the amount of images. I tried asking "Honey" at iPod technical but might has well have asked the cat.
the new ipod 160G silver I bought 2days ago I was so happy with the new function
but unfortunately today I am really piss off when I found my ipod is monitor dead ......
all the sudden it just turn off had not any responding whatever I did to it .and then I have to do some resreach on internet to find out this is the very very common problem that I pod had for a long time ...
First of all connect the ipod to your pc then press menu and the central button simultaneity for 6 seconds then it wake up ....
but how about the fans who doesn't know how to find out the solution ????
here for really disappoint with the new technology
Ok...Well I love all of the up dates! Although there are still some gliches that I think can be fix.
When ever I go through cover flow and choose a song, and look at the lyrics then hit the menu button to go back to cover flow, it becomes all screwy! Its like the center of the screen is pushed up and comes through the bottom...
And there some other issues when I do that same thing it turns into a green plad type screen...
