Just in case you've been keeping one eye trained on the console wars out there, you might want to take note of the most recent sales figures from Japan. According to the latest stats, the PSP overtook the DS, Wii, Xbox 360, PS3, and PS2 in sales last week, propelled by the newest handheld installment of the
Final Fantasy series,
Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Sure, it's happened
before, but with the increasing competitiveness out there, this one seems extra important. The message should be clear to Nintendo -- don't rest on your laurels. Also, don't miss out on really hot Square Enix exclusives. The last thing you want is to go the way of Atari, and just end up as a
simulation on a thriving system.
"The three commandments of the internets:"
Yes, but will you blend?
Psp fanboys, rather than fight the ds owners, enjoy the moment since there isn't another FF7 game coming in a very long while, if I were you, I would just go watch the FF7 movie or something on the psp or something to celebrate, on umd of course... Considering also the fact that Nintendo is stock piling the U.S. since the big spending season is coming to stores starting thanksgiving they already own Japan with or with Final fantasy which is like a bible over there...
On the basis of these disturbing news, I'm setting up an "I-hate-SONY blog"
I bet sony are going to take notice...
Couldnt care what people say but the DS is Butt fuggly. Ive never seen such an ugly device in my life. The psp looks the part and there so cheap now.
The DS Lite is a very stylish piece of hardware, I see what you mean if you're talking about DS Phat, but you're going to have to get off your knees and do up Sony's pants if you believe that the PSP has any significant aesthetic advantage over the Lite.
Congratulations Sony, you've done something right for a change. The slim version of the psp was a good move, but too little, too late...
The DS is the winning console because it clearly offered a new experience, nintendo took a brave (foolhardy?) route and took a new look at the Gameboy experience. Sony played it safe and delivered what it thought people would want, a PS2 in their pocket. Not that the PSP is a bad system, far from it, it just wasn't offering anything new.
Saying all that, I had a DS for a while, then dropped it and it broke. I'd played Mario and Wario... I couldn't be bothered to buy a new one for Zelda... Nintendo thought up a new portable console, but forgot to make new IP. And the first version of the DS was damn ugly.
The DS walked the fine line of being a novelty and a fresh look a gaming; it all depended on the quality of the games and like the N64 and Gamecube, it's had only a few AAA titles and then a slew of crap. Even the AAA titles are mostly Mario or Zelda based. The Playstation tries to caters for a wider market, the old favourites and the odd ball game like Loco. It's key advantage was it didn't look like a kiddies toy, but the DSlite helped remove some of that stigma. The DS offered family fun, Dad and the kids could enjoy in brief sessions, the PSP didn't offer that simplicity (or the right price). Oh and the portable PS? Not that portable.
It's only a blip in the sales, because a new PSP claiming to solve slow loading times has arrived. Perhaps Sony should have worried less about hackers and homebrewers and got the update out sooner! It's sad to see Sony make a good job out of the first two playstations and then stumble so badly. I think both the PSP and PS3 have lost too much ground to the others, Sony may win an occasional battle, but they lost this war. Hopefully they'll learn and the PSP2 and PS4 can wow the public like the original Playstation did. But this is Sony and I doubt it. The whole Playstation 1&2 success must have been a blip!
everyone in japan already has a ds!!
Doesn't everyone in Japan already own a DS?
Makes me smile how one small victory for PSP makes the Sony fanboys think the console is now doing super-well in comparison to the DS. How red-faced they will look next week. Hoo-boy.
Funny, Engadget. I didn't know it was April 1st already!
This is ridiculous. Final Fantasy isn't some magic panacea that can turn things around for the PSP... just ask the Wonderswan if you need proof. Sales for the PSP have spiked in the past thanks to high-profile releases like Monster Hunter Freedom, but those increased sales never last long, and this won't be an exception.
i dont care which system sell the best. i care for the system that has the best games for me :3
this happened with, er, monster rancher.. 3000.
final fantasy 7: instant sales boost.
wonder how much it will last. i mean, japan shows signs of at least 4 DS per capita. it's unbelievable.
how do you sell 50000 of the same device EVERY WEEK. they make houses with DS...'s?
Funny how people see Sony as the bad guy and Nintendo as the good guy.
Even though Nintendo has sold a sh.. load of DS Lights, that doesn´t mean that Sonys PSP isent a succes.
Its Sonys first handheld and its sold 20 somthing million units. That most be somekind of succes.
