Asus' Eee PC up for pre-order... again
If you'll recall, Asus' Eee PC first went up for pre-order at NCIXUS just under a month ago, and merely days after the wee machine was exposed courtesy of a Russian review, here it is again on yet another e-tailer's website. The Eee PC 701 is holding down the high-end with 4GB of built-in storage and a $399.99 pricetag, while two versions of the Eee PC 700 are available at $259.99 and $299.99 price points. Interestingly, the website requires a $150 "non-refundable deposit" up front, and promises to only charge the balance once your laptop ships "in early October." Personally, we still wouldn't be so quick to put up a down payment just yet, but for the brave (and unfathomably impatient) ones out there, hit the read link to place your (pre)-order.[Via Laptoping]

They've had that up for some time now - another company, www.citrusmicro.com also has pre-orders but they don't require money down. They contacted me yesterday to say that I should have my eeePC in hand by the 2nd week of October.

Too many spec are unknown IMHO to make a non refundable deposit.
Previously it has been said that neither the RAM, nor the Flash memory, would be upradeable. However, the spec here says the RAM, even the largrt 512 MB version, is upgradeable. No mention of the flash memory maxing at 4 GB.
Paul @ Sep 26th 2007 12:42PM
From the link that I'm seeing, it shows that the RAM is upgradeable up to 1GB max, that the 4GB is embedded and that any additional memory would have to come from usb memory or SD.
Ian @ Sep 26th 2007 12:50PM
Sorta weird that the internal flash would be permanently embedded when everyone knows the price for flash will just continue to fall and the size available will increase. Sure a USB connection can work but why force a user to go that way?
JHosche @ Sep 26th 2007 12:58PM
I think the soldered on Flash reduces cost a bit since that's one less connector piece that's required. Part of the reason that its been speculated that the ram can't be upgraded either is because of the cost savings to Asus in not having that connector piece for the stick of ram.

I like the photo sharing girl, makes me think I should put that $150 deposit down in singles.

hopefully it's not only a news, since they had released a news too many months ago T_T

Anyone got a link for a european preorder?

The 100 $ PC project must be dying!
zelman @ Sep 26th 2007 1:57PM
not really. The $100 laptop is wine. This is grape juice. Wait a year and this will be the $100 laptop...but then people will say it's outdated.

I just wonder if it will support SDHC cards. I would love to throw a 8GB SDHC card in it have have moderate storage for 1-2 movies and a few albums on the go.

I thought the price on these were gonna be at least $100 bucks cheaper seeing how I just bought a Toshiba Satellite (15.4", 1.7ghz Core Duo, 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, DVD burner) for $450 new. That's a $50 dollar difference for slightly more portability and a lot less performance? Apparently I didn't get the memo.
perfectionist @ Sep 26th 2007 7:58PM
It has a quicker startup time due to the SSD. It also has a webcam, microphone, and thoughtful design, unlike most budget laptops.
It weighs 2 pounds! ~One-third of what an average 15.4" laptop weighs. A lot more portability. Who wants to drag along a big, bulky machine to college classes or a café?
Alex93053 @ Sep 26th 2007 5:19PM
what happened to the $200 price tag?
JHosche @ Sep 26th 2007 5:41PM
That model isn't going to be sold in the US or Europe but there still is a $199 model in existence apparently.
Jeff Lewis @ Sep 26th 2007 5:21PM
www.a-power.com will have it in October (or so said the salesman I talked to last weekend...

I thought that the high end model of this was 16 gb?
4/8/16 as the progression, starting at $259 to $399.
Perhaps I am wrong about this. But I believe a Chinese Asus Expo released information regarding the memory at a Convention. See http://www.umpcfever.com/viewthread.php?tid=36&extra=page%3D1
Any further information or if you or anyone else can shed light on this, I would really appreciate it.

HEY everyone, I've been hanging out at eeeuser.com following this little beauty.
A couple users uploaded pictures of the interface on the Eee and I built a little Online Test Drive for the Eee.
Check it out at: http://www.honeypothack.com/eee/internet.htm
