cy-fi: the wireless iPod speaker for your bicycle
Although it's certainly debatable whether or not the cy·fi truly is the "world's first wireless bicycle speaker and ultimate iPod accessory," it does look fairly well thought out. Aside from boasting an admittedly stylish design, the device weighs in at around three-ounces, mounts on nearly any frame, plays nice with your iPod / iPod nano and offers up six-hours of battery life. Additionally, it supports "multipoint broadcasting to up to four cy·fi speakers," and it's slated to hit bike stores in early 2008 for $149.95.

Ha! I beat them to it a year ago!
Lithium bottle battery, 50w amp in a saddlebag under the seat and a speaker on the handlebars :D
Love the name though...
it would be really awesome if the software could be programmed so that at any time you could hit the select button during a playing song and it would jump not to the toggle for rating and toggling the track point, but rather a loud, super-hearable honking sound to get the darned pedestrians to stop themselves BEFORE they cross through the green man despite the fact there's an oncoming cycle (honking sound or a few choice swear words, either works).
i'm impressed with this. let us know when it does hit shelves!!
Delightful... Just what we need - More noise in the parks. Whatever happened to the concept of enjoying a nice, quiet bike ride?
just what we need, drive by noise pollution!. make em wear a headset if they want music.
There is tons of drive by noise pollution as it is. We've all seen someone with a beat up old honda or cavalier with a subwoofer you could mistake for a freight train. I don't think an ipod speaker is a major concern for you.
As far as I'm concerned it's a great idea. The cyclist will be able to hear other vehicles, sirens, construction crews...it is much safer than headphones where your sense of hearing is concentrated to a very close by source. Sure all of this is done easily by not listening to music at all but I don't think anyone would want to do that.
Your only looking at it from the riders perspective. I was speaking from the stand point of everyone else around the rider. I don't like hearing that bass from passing cars and I sure as hell don't want to hear someone else's choice of music from riders flying by me on riding/walking paths.
now only if peddling could charge the ipod/speaker
Then I suggest that you wear some headphones.
As a bicycle commuter, my thoughts are that, if you don't want to enjoy the sounds of nature on your ride (into work or out in the country), insert your earbuds...so you don't hear that F-250 rumbling up behind you and we don't have to suffer your taste in tunage.
Really! this is a good idea? I'm picturing the poor kid riding up with this on his handle bars and getting beat up. And good point about a generator...when I was a kid we had lights that ran on generators attached to the front wheel. Heck, put one of those on this and then it's cool...at least with the geek crowd.
I don't see this marketed for kids. I think its for adult cyclist who ride for leisure, exercise or commute.
Great... except during windy days. And doesn't wind, rain, snow, hail, and sleet hurt speakers?
