iPod touch gets updated to 1.1.1, too
It looks like the iPhone's not the only touchscreen-based Apple device getting an update today, with the iPod touch now also moving on up to version 1.1.1. While it's yet to be confirmed, some users at the MacRumors forums are reporting that the update (which clocks in at a hefty 150MB) actually fixes some of the screen problems that users have been experiencing on the device -- still no calendar editing though. For its part, Apple only describes the update as containing "bug fixes," although touch users needn't go very far to see exactly what that entails, with the update now available though iTunes.
Update: This also fixes the iPod touch unlocking issues for those of you trying to sync with non-English version of Microsoft Windows in Japan and beyond.

about time ...
John @ Sep 27th 2007 4:05PM
Does it let you buy and add ringtones?
Tucker @ Sep 27th 2007 4:07PM
...to an iPod Touch? To what end, exactly, would you suggest using ringtones on a non-phone device?
John @ Sep 27th 2007 4:12PM
To give Apple more money :D
Constable Odo @ Sep 27th 2007 8:08PM
Because it's my iPod touch and I can do anything I want with it. I'll create a third-party application that just plays ring tones randomly every few minutes or so to annoy all the people around me. I'll put it to my face and talk into it for a while. I like to feel important and I can't afford an iPhone.
Liqwid @ Sep 27th 2007 4:12PM
I know this may be a stupid question, but does the WiFi Music Store only work on WiFi, or does it work on Edge as well?
RDH @ Sep 27th 2007 4:19PM
Where is the Firmware for iPod Classic? - Apple is being completely negligent over all the issues that are rendering this device useless to many, many customers. Their silence on this issue is not far short of scandalous!
Joel Pirela @ Sep 27th 2007 4:18PM
Only on WIFI... no EDGE
MRCUR @ Sep 27th 2007 4:19PM
1. The iPod Touch only has WiFi, so yes, only WiFi.
2. The store only works over WiFi on the iPhone, hence the name WiFi Music Store.
Liqwid @ Sep 27th 2007 4:36PM
Thanks. And I was referring to the iPhone, otherwise I would not have mentioned Edge. But, yeah, useless feature when you have a perfectly good computer laying around.
Ignacio @ Sep 27th 2007 5:38PM
I hope this clears that up ;-)

Still no calender editing, still no money given to Apple by me.
jason @ Sep 28th 2007 10:41AM
No calendar editing is the one thing keeping me from giving Apple $399 dollars of my money, There have to be more people out there that would love to use this is a kind of a stripped down PDA.
It already has internet, and keeps a calendar, so what's the deal
Twitchy @ Sep 27th 2007 4:17PM
Does the bug fix repair the stupidly large price sticker? If yes, then I'm interested.
Lee Lovell @ Sep 27th 2007 4:19PM
heh, i do remember submitting this. With that link. Yet no credit.
*Goes to bathtub, turns on linkin park on iPod touch, begins cutting*

their last album was pretty emo.
Reader @ Sep 27th 2007 7:57PM
Linkin Park is considered cutter music by you people? Wow, what do you normally listen to, Britney Spears?
Lee Lovell @ Sep 27th 2007 8:16PM
*walks into wall*
Reader, use that miraculous sense of sarcasm that you seem to have.
Brian @ Sep 27th 2007 4:32PM
ive installer the update, and rushed to see if the screen is fixed... i think they just made everything lighter. all the menus just look overall lighter, and scenes where the defective screens show, are just a little bit better. looks like theyre trying to fix a hardware problem with software
Logboy @ Sep 27th 2007 5:59PM
Have you tried taking it back for an exchange?
Brian @ Sep 27th 2007 6:03PM
na, i havent... i know i should though.. the apple store is just kinda far and ill be out there next week.. haha, so i was hoping my lazy ass would get the convenience of a downloadable fix
teej @ Sep 27th 2007 4:36PM
of course it got an update too...i mean, they are the same update seeing as to how the ipod touch and iphone are the same thing.
sam @ Sep 27th 2007 4:38PM
man that really sucks.
I bought the 3G ipod like 5 years ago and have since been waiting for a compelling reason to upgrade...and the touch now gives me that...but apple goes and disables the cool new apps...goes cheap on the screen and continues to screw any customer who purchases at time of announcement.
seriously, up until 3 months ago I was more than willing to drop money on their new products at time of announcement. Now...well, now I'll wait about 2-4 months before considering a purchase on any of their products.
totally sucks. but they're better than microsoft by a long shot.
toby @ Sep 27th 2007 4:48PM
My sentiments exactly sam. I have a 3rd gen, bought a "classic" 80 gig and returned it withen a week due to it's lack luster performance. Really bummed about Apple products lately.
The Grand Master @ Sep 27th 2007 5:55PM
You've survived with Contact adding and calendar editing thus far, what changed? If you've managed 5 years without them, why do you desperately need them now? I would certainly never have considered having Google Maps a 'killer app' for an iPod, but then again that's just me.
I don't think people understand that the Touch is still an iPod, and and damn good one at that. Its no iPhone, that's for sure, but its still a freakin awesome music player.
mikecpeck @ Sep 27th 2007 4:51PM
There was an error updating mine. Had to restore it. BOO.
Camperton @ Sep 28th 2007 6:11PM
Same here. Lame.
Live2Hunt @ Sep 27th 2007 4:51PM
Since when could a firmware update fix a hardware problem?
To MacRumor:
Know the difference between "firmware" and "hardware"
joe23521 @ Sep 27th 2007 5:15PM
It's apparent that they hardly know the difference between the two, whereas, you firmly do.
robster @ Sep 27th 2007 4:57PM
Am I the only one that still has/uses their 15GB ipod (with monochrom screen and 4 buttons on the top)? I'll probably wait for a 32GB touch before upgrading..
Maverickfiveo @ Sep 27th 2007 5:02PM
I just "upgraded" from exactly that iPod (which I never filled) to the 16Gb touch because I wanted to have WiFi access while traveling for work without having to pull out and boot up my ginormous laptop. Furthermore, I also recently ran my old iPod over with my car. Don't ask how I did that.
Camperton @ Sep 28th 2007 6:06PM
How did you do that?
channy @ Oct 7th 2007 12:06PM
i am currently using that very device!
although i have a 16gb touch winging its way to me now, and am very much looking forward to owning an ipod which doesnt run out of battery within around 5 hours...
still, can't fault the thing otherwise :P
yacoub @ Sep 27th 2007 5:00PM
Hopefully now that iPhone and touch are on same firmware we'll see hackers jailbreak the iPhone and that'll offer a way to free the touch as well.
iAussie @ Sep 27th 2007 5:30PM
The really disappointing thing here is that update 1.1.1 gave apple the chance to fix the calendar cripple but it didn't, therefore apple actually still thinks that deliberatly cripplng a basic application in the name of market segmentation is OK.
Having a device ... ANY device that is running a mobile version of mac osx, with all the functionality that is needed to use these types of programs (and to have a perfectly usable version already working on its sister device the iPhone), but then CHOOSING to break it is just plain insulting the customers intelligence and I thought that apple was better than that.
NickF @ Sep 27th 2007 5:37PM
So... they've updates it before it even ships? Thats kinda stupid...
Boynamedsue @ Sep 27th 2007 6:27PM
ummm. its been at stores for weeks.
Paulieb @ Sep 27th 2007 5:38PM
Oh well I have pre-ordered a 16gb touch, thought it was about time to upgrade from my crappy battery life 20gig which is about 4 years old...from the postings it looks like the screen is bollocks and it will be improved in about 4 mths! Sod it, i'll see what comes through the post (assuming British Royal Mail doesn't lose the parcel or crush it by accident...). I also ordered the sennheiser headphones as the ipod phones are toss. Go on...are they crap as well?
Boynamedsue @ Sep 27th 2007 7:36PM
i'm still using the ones it came with. they're still not great quality but at least i haven't blown them out in a week like previous ones.
Joe Urena @ Sep 27th 2007 5:55PM
This version of the software includes additional new features, bug fixes and supersedes all previous versions.
New features include:
• iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
• Louder speakerphone and receiver volume

• Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
• Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape

• Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
• Support for TV Out

• New Passcode lock time intervals

Boynamedsue @ Sep 27th 2007 6:29PM
wow. almost sounds like it turns the touch into an iphone. oh, wait, you're posting about the iphone.
Chris @ Sep 27th 2007 5:59PM
Well I'm not sure what the update did, it hasn't installed yet, but it messed up my touch and now it has to restore...
Saint @ Sep 27th 2007 6:04PM
Does anybody know if this update fixes the ipod radio remote issue?
(At this moment is incompatible with iPod Touch)
Larry @ Sep 27th 2007 6:04PM
Looks like they fixed the lock out on the Ipod....so it will say Ipod is disabled instead of Iphone.
That is the only thing I have found so far.
Larry
JPerry2010 @ Sep 27th 2007 6:15PM
Just to let y'all know...the update put my ipod touch into recovery mode and forced me to restore it...so...now you know.
Resist @ Sep 27th 2007 6:46PM
Gots to love how Apple is using our already limited memory to fix things they didn't do correclty before releasing their products.
Boynamedsue @ Sep 27th 2007 7:05PM
i'm hardly a update wizard but i doubt the 150 megs size of the update means you lose 150 megs on the device.
just sayin.
Boynamedsue @ Sep 27th 2007 7:42PM
anyone notice that the update fucked up 3 peoples ipods in this thread. engadget should get on that story, i don't want to have to reload all my shit.
eric79 @ Sep 27th 2007 7:48PM
my (ipod touch)screen works beautiful now :)
