Linksys' DMA2100 / DMA2200 Media Center Extenders get priced

Remember those Linksys Media Center Extenders that popped up yesterday? Well, today the duo has officially been priced, but there's no good news for folks hoping for these two to undercut the other guys. Up first is the DMA2200, which will of course sport an integrated "upscaling DVD player" along with the obligatory dual-band Wireless N functionality, while the DMA2100 arrives in a smaller package (see it up close after the break) but keeps to the basics by omitting the optical drive. Both boxes are set to land this November, and while the DVD playin' DMA2200 will run you $349.99, you can save $50 by opting for the lesser-spec'd sibling.

Exactly what I was thinking! Xbox 360 does everything these boxes do but for less money.

@brownd: they have DivX support. Unless that comes in the fall Xbox 360 update this year, in which case you still have a point. Still, this box is only a little more expensive than a Core XBox 360, and comes with free n-grade wifi and is probably a hell of a lot smaller and quieter, so it's not a terrible proposition over all.

You can stream DivX to the 360, but I agree the new extenders are smaller and quieter.

Reasons why you want this over a 360:
Noise
Actual codec support
Integrated wifi, especially the n bit, unavailable on the 360
Automatic startup to media center
A core 360 with remote and wifi added would be $430

I'm still hoping the street price will be a bit less. Looks like a cool unit but $350 just feels a little hefty. i could spend a few hundred more and hook a mac mini up to the TV.

I hope these fail like the first generation so I can pick up a few cheap! It's a great idea, I just can't justify spending more money on something I hook up to a TV than I spent on the actual TV.

The DMA2200/2100 will likely work very nicely with a Linksys NAS200 which sports a TwonkeyVision Media Server. I juat added the NAS200 to my network and tried to use it with my 360. The 360 is finiky about what files it can see and what it will play. Some .mov files should up as audio. Some .m4p files can't even be seen. Photos work OK. Audio files should be WMA. If the DMA2200 lets me see all the various file formats and play them with out hassle Linksys just may have a nice package that eliminates the need to go to the PC or even add a multimedia PC if your strapped for cash.
