FlipStart sees $500 price reduction, now sits at $1,500
Demanding a cool two grand for the FlipStart was probably asking a bit much, but whacking 25-percent off the purchase price is probably a good way to get folks looking in that direction once again. Effectively immediately, the "FlipStart super compact PC will be available for $1,499," and while none of the specs have changed, it's definitely (well, somewhat) easier to stomach the pricetag. Of course, it remains to be seen if $1.5k is still a bit overpriced, but hey, it's a start, right?[Via The Boy Genius Report]

Are the people who already bought one getting $100 towards another FlipStart product?

I really do not see the point why should people buy this kind of bulky device. It is so thick, and the overall shape and design looks so stupid. Could it be designed 20 years ago? I would not take it over $500.00. Wait, no way, I have no place to bring it with me. Actually, I am not very sure if I would take it even if it is free...

I'll bite. Why would someone want one of these over say, a Samsung Q1U-V? They weigh about the same, but the Q1U-V is $300 cheaper, has a bigger hard drive, more memory, a larger screen that's a touchscreen and has longer battery life.
The both have tiny cramped keyboards (although the Q1U's looks more cramped than the Flipstart).
The only real advantages the Flipstart has is the Sidekick display on the top and the faster CPU and I'm not sure they're worth the extra cash. You could use that to get the Q1U-CMXP adding an HSDPA modem to the unit and upping the HD to 80GB.

This is major!
A sign that an update is coming?
Hopefully they will actually hire a designer this time, the current version looks so 90's...
painty @ Oct 2nd 2007 5:15PM
$1500 for a whole bunch of ugly
Ron Amadeo @ Oct 2nd 2007 5:21PM
i wouldn't buy that for a 100 bucks.
MonteVale @ Oct 2nd 2007 5:41PM
Ha-Ha-Ha...
some reduction...
In order to see a real interest these devices should cost $500 bucks max!
The EEE PC from Acer is hopefully going to move this.
(Not saying that they are the same caliber devices only about the price point).
kirby @ Oct 2nd 2007 10:01PM
Think you mean Asus buddy :P
Average Joe @ Oct 2nd 2007 9:52PM
Eee pc is from Asus.
montevale @ Oct 3rd 2007 5:12AM
sure it is Asus :)
...but the flipstart still needs to be $500 bucks!
suv4x4 @ Oct 2nd 2007 5:54PM
What they did is keep it at the same price and weight as a small laptop, but increase thickness horribly, and provide tiny screen and keyboard. Worst of all worlds?
Make you think what are people thinking when making those sometimes...
Stan Winstone @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:07PM
Oh I thought it was $1,500 they were paying me to be seen with such a POS. The Folley-O has a bit of company it seems.
eh @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:13PM
reminds me of an old RIM device that we used to use at IBM back in 1998. And it was top of the line back then! LOL
DickHardknocks @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:14PM
damn thing looks like the President's NUCLEAR FOOTBALL.

$1500 for a boat anchor? I can't really see any other "good" uses.
They might get a few sales.
Hunkbeet @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:27PM
dude, this thing is pointless...
Sony, UMPC Flipstart
core solo 1.3ghz 1ghz pentium M
1Gb of ram 512gb of ram
40gb hdd 30gb hdd
slim sleek, touch screen ugly ass design
sure the sony cost like $300 more, but it is so much better and sexy looking
mongoos150 @ Oct 2nd 2007 6:30PM
Is this thing for real? Looks like a Windows CE device from 1997. Wouldn't be caught dead with that thing on campus.
Leonardo DiCrapio @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:01PM
Just think of this as a cheaper alternative to a panic room if you fear you might be the victim of a home invasion. In case of an emergency, throw the FlipStart at the intruder and you can break the intruder's kneecap.
patrick @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:22PM
STUPID completely Shtoopid.
john @ Oct 2nd 2007 7:23PM
LOL NO WAY!!
Being seen with this would be like hang'n out with fat chicks!
No F'k Way
Tim Matthews @ Oct 3rd 2007 4:06AM
a long time ago somebody decided i know lets make an ultra compact pc and lets let it fold up. then over the years it gradually got smaller and renamed o laptop/notebook. flipstart is way too late. this has already been invented.
Richard @ Oct 3rd 2007 6:33AM
Meh, give me a Fujitsu U1010 or U800 umpc any day over this monstrosity.
