Shortly after hearing that Sony's PSP
overtook Nintendo's DS in Japanese sales, along comes word that --
surprise,
surprise -- the Big N is still king in the Wii / PS3 / Xbox 360 sales war. According to reports that looked at movement from April through September, the Wii outsold the PlayStation 3 "by more than four to one in Japan," which is admittedly better than the "
six to one" differential it's faced before. Reportedly, Nintendo moved nearly 1.6 million units in the homeland while Sony garnered just over 385,000 new PS3 customers in the same period, but this really
shouldn't be shocking to anyone at this point.
It's sooooo sad that everyone who's a "hardcore" gamer, is lost on the fact that "hardcore" gamers aren't the majority anymore.
Yeah, but hardcore gamers tend to buy more than a few games per system thus generating license revenue. Nintendo could not have sold the Wii at a loss because a majority of the people that bought it will likely never remove Wii-Sports from the drive. They may as well have created a Wii-Sports version of it with no drive and smaller footprint.
To all the people criticizing the Wii for not being "hardcore".
All I have to say is "DUUHHHHH!"
Even the Big N admitted the Wii is not hardcore. They have positioned it to be the "second console" in the house. And judging by how many "hardcore" gamers in this very thread have admitted they have a PS3/Xbox AND a Wii.....I'd say it worked.
I, myself, used to be hardcore but just can't keep it up anymore. So the Wii suites me PERFECTLY. And I have more than 3 games (RE4 Wii version, Zelda, Sports, Paper mario, and Metroid to be exact). Between that and my DS, I have plenty to keep me entertained when I have a moment...which...like most people is a lot more rare than the "hardcore" demographic.
I personally just think the "hardcore" community is a bit miffed that this is the first time they haven't been catered to exclusively. They are scared because it's not the Wii that is last gen....it's the community.
While our Wii definitely gets the least play of our consoles, with the 360 naturally getting the most game time, I still love the Wii and I know that there will be some must own titles in the near future.
I'm really looking forward to picking up the new Smash Bros. and Mario Galaxy, and personally, as long as the new Zelda titles are coming out, I'll never give up on the Wii.
A $399 Acer laptop, or a $1299 Sony laptop? Using it to get onto the internet, doing some MS office stuff, I'd go for $399. Same with gaming. Not everyone cares about graphics. Price and fun is what some people care about.
Your analogy is flawed. If the Acer laptop had a 640 line screen and the Sony laptop had 1080 lines, you might just pick up the Sony.
@ Andir, actually it's your analogy that's flawed. You're making the assumption that screen resolution is everything. This is exactly what wysiwyg was arguing against. If you find something that does what you want/need for less money than the "biggest, baddest" beast on the market, you would probably be better off going with the less expensive.
To go along with the rest of the Ferrari analogies here: Why would you buy a Ferrari if all you need is a commuter car? There are more efficient, economical cars out there, better suited to a commuter's needs.
>> Your analogy is flawed. If the Acer laptop had a 640 line screen and the Sony laptop had 1080 lines, you might just pick up the Sony.
Not exactly. I bought my dad a laptop with a 15" WXGA screen. Yet he only uses 800x600, saying that the default fonts are too small for WXGA.
Sometime the specs are just overkill for some people.
Wii aren't availabe in the markets of the rest of Asia. So wii buyers live in Hong Kong, Taiwan, China etc. have to buy wii from Japan. At least most from Japan. So the sales are boosted high.
Hi, I'm a Japanese gamer. It seems to me that many Japanese gamers who want PS3 are just waiting for the price drop. They are usually not satisfied with only Wii games, that's why PS2 games still sell well in Japan. Once a Price cut comes PS3 sales will rise alot. Also games like Guran turismo5, MGS4, Winning Eleven, FF13 will help PS3 alot (people go nuts for these games over here).
why american products don't sale well in Japan? Japan only purchase Japan products. Even the Ipod is not a success as it is in the US and Europe.
Wii sales are down to around 24,000 per week in Japan. That's only about a 2:1 difference over the PS3.
I've been predicting this for a while. Wii was at 6:1, now it's 4:1 overall, and 2:1 week to week. The ratio is dropping, and dropping fast. If there's a PS3 price drop as we expect next week (I imagine Japan will get the same 40GB model), we'll be seeing 1:1 pretty soon.
The Wii's novelty is wearing off.
No surprise here. What games are people playing on their PS3? I have both, and the only thing I've used my PS3 for is watching Blu-Ray DVD and I played Resistance Fall of Man, but it was only "okay"
Nintendo has proven a great point here. People care more about game play than graphics and "state of the art" technology, always have, and always will.
