Brando brings iriver's S7 "choat" DAP to the States at last
It's all suddenly so clear. We've never been able to find true satisfaction in a domestic DAP due to the dearth of choat-based interfaces. Scroll wheels and touch screens are all well and good, but where's the magic? Well our problem has finally been solved by Brando, who is importing the iriver S7 -- which showed up in Korea about a year ago -- to the States as the "USB Chocolate MP3 Player." There's 2GB of memory, MP3 and WMA playback, 4 LEDs and a $40 pricetag, but none of that really matters in light of the fact that there's a chicken-goat hybrid gracing the volume up button, while a peeing dog shushes the DAP. We've finally found true love.

This would work great for me, as i only own albums by the seminal groups 'rooster' and 'dog'
JoeX @ Oct 10th 2007 11:51AM
Wait for the new model. I understand that it will have 4 GB, 2 choats and 1 dird (dolphin/bird combo).
Shadowise @ Oct 10th 2007 11:50AM
I wish iRiver would hurry up and release some decent hard drive players again. I need a worthy replacement for my iRiver HP-120.
Nando @ Oct 10th 2007 11:58AM
What's a "choat"? Isn't that like a taint?
chris @ Oct 10th 2007 12:04PM
no its like a chode and a boat; a fat ship.
Choat @ Oct 10th 2007 3:01PM
No, I'll tell you what it tain't: more than one letter off a part of my anatomy. Also, the "dog pissing" icon (which I can only assume to mean "Return to Main Menu") really made my knees weak.
Here's what Urban Dictionary has to say about it:

farfisa @ Oct 10th 2007 4:25PM
"Choata" is another word for that, yeah.
But "Choat" is just a chicken-goat. Nothing dirty about that.
Nando @ Oct 10th 2007 4:28PM
OH LOL!!! Okay, thanks for that.
Lord of the Ming @ Oct 10th 2007 12:16PM
A choat is a genetic hybrid of a chicken and a goat.
DingDong @ Oct 10th 2007 12:28PM
If I hadn't blown $100 on drinks last night I would impulse buy this right now. damn.
Anthony @ Oct 10th 2007 12:40PM
I'd consider buying aspirin instead of an MP3 player if I'd spend $100 on drinks in one night (unless they were very fancy Acai alco-ternatives).
DingDong @ Oct 10th 2007 12:44PM
thanks, I am already loaded up on Excedrin. I drink alot, and I drink in New York. $100 is par for the course, my friend.
Anthony @ Oct 10th 2007 12:38PM
This is definitely going to bum out the folks trying to sell the 1gb model on ebay for north of $100.
I actually think it would be a nice travel MP3 player, but almost all my stuff's in AAC format.
Vizion @ Oct 10th 2007 7:15PM
umm Engadget the S7 has been in the states for a long time alread. B&H Photo has been selling the real thing on their site for months and it's just $33.95:

NHAnimator @ Oct 10th 2007 12:48PM
The reason I started visiting Engadget a while back was driven by my desire to find something - anything - with a peeing dog icon. Finally!
Or as we say here in New England: Wicked Pissa!
Tommy Crashwreck @ Oct 10th 2007 1:06PM
The only contexts I have ever, ever heard of anyone saying "Wicked Pissa" have been conversations about things people say stereotypically in New England. Don't get me wrong, I say "wicked" all the time, but I just don't believe the "Wicked Pissa" myth.
ero1220 @ Oct 10th 2007 2:33PM
oh, those people do exist.
The true massholes
Paul @ Oct 10th 2007 6:39PM
As an American, I can only say, what the hell is pissa?
coach @ Oct 10th 2007 2:01PM
Well, an iPod shuffle only has a few buttons, why not replace it with some funky looking animals? Usability stays the same and I think this really looks cool.
Cesar Cardoso @ Oct 10th 2007 2:24PM
2GB of memory, MP3 and WMA playback, 4 LEDs, chicken-goats, peeing dogs and a $40 price tag? Even without chicken-goats and peeing dogs, it's a steal.
Jarom Hillery @ Oct 10th 2007 3:01PM
so... is it just me or does this thing offered by brando not exactly look like the S7 pictures on the iriver site? The buttons along the sides are in the wrong places and there aren't enough buttons. On the brando one the power button and the play button are on the side of the next track button, but on the iriver site the power/function is the only button on that side. Also, on the last track side of the real S7 there is the SRS button and the shuffle button, but the brando one has no buttons on that side. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like this should be filed under "keepin' it real fake"... that would sure explain the brando player costs so much less than the real one.
JS @ Oct 11th 2007 1:06PM
Paul you really dropped the ball on this one, very disapointing. It is so obviously a fake:
http://www.iriver.com/product/p_detail.asp?pidx=80
The original has no LED's and like mentioned in the comment above, a different button layout. You really should have done some basic research, instead I think you just wanted to make "choat" jokes.
Sandy @ Nov 17th 2007 6:25PM
You are right that this is a fake. Beware! I ordered one, and just took it out of the box...which is the wrong box. I have a real S7, so I can compare them closely. The colors are wrong, and dull. The front cover seems to be painted white, and not molded beige. The workmanship is shabby. It uses a traditional mini usb to usb cable connector. The other buttons are wrong. The instructions were a one sheet mostly printed in Chinese and bad English. It doesn't say "iRiver" anywhere on the device. And... it doesn' even work. The iRiver software doesn't recognize it, and my Windows XP computer can't use it from any port. Run away!
