Apple files for a second force-sensitive touchpad patent
It looks like the elves in Cupertino are pretty busy strapping force sensors on the backs of touchpads, because Apple's just filed for a second patent on the tech. Unlike the first application, which described a system of spring membranes, the new patent relies on a second set of conductive traces underneath the standard X / Y array to detect force. As usual, there's no mention of where we might see this stuff pop up, but we're going to go ahead and assume it's for a 3G Newton Circle iPhone Extreme.

does this pressure sensitive pad have the possible potential off feed-back? They could add another layer that slightly moves back when a finger presses a region at certain pressure. I know its far fetched but the touch screen could (partly) feel like a real keyboard (which is adaptable).

Maybe you'll be able to install 3rd party apps if you press really hard...

Since it's designed by Apple, this must be an absolutely brilliant concept. Duh! Could somebody tell me, what does all that stuff mean? I touch it and it touches me back? Wow! Amazing.

No, it means it can detect how hard you're pressing. Maybe a hard press can indicate a right-click or something?

I could see it being used for better control on touch devices. When you push a little harder you fling through menus and pictures further. Just an idea.

they are probably just doing this so if someone else comes out this in their product and infringe on their copyright they can go to court and get a huge sum of money

You mean they have detectors that can sense The Force?
Jens Stalder @ Oct 12th 2007 1:19AM
Somebody gets it. It got huge potential I tell you.

Apple likes to grab everything to their side and push everyone off. "If" there's new hardware coming out with this type of tech, don't expect you can use any 3rd party apps. It won't be software block either. It will be all hardware lock. lol. :P

So only jedi will be able to use apple's new toys?
David @ Oct 12th 2007 4:56AM
Is this not like the touchpad on most laptops? I know mine can detect how hard I'm pressing. I guess maybe it's for screens.

iPod games duh!!!

I have this already on my Alpine head unit in my car.
It's white and chrome and Steve Jobs made it though! So I must get it now!

what's the license going to cost us Apple?
