Samsung's white-LED backlit display for 2008: 10k:1 contrast for your laptop
We're just talking LED-backlit LCD panels at the moment, but with any luck, they'll appear in your favorite laptop someday soon. Samsung's trio measure in at 18.4-inches (1,920 x 1,080), 16.0-inches (1,366 x 768), and a more traditional 15.4-inches (1,440 x 900). The latter boasts a White-LED backlighting for a whopping 10,000:1 contrast (at least), 300cd/m2 brightness, 45% color saturation, and power consumption of just 2 Watts or less when playing video. Expect the 16:9 pair to hit mass production in the first half of 2008 while the white-LED mofo should arrive before 2008 is through. Full specs after the break.

I don't know what planet you're living on but Thinkpad X60s models have had LED backlit displays for over a year now.
Robert @ Oct 17th 2007 9:39PM
sr... what planet? The Thinkpad X60 has a terribly small screen. I know I am not the only one looking for a Laptop with a 15" display that is LED backlit other than a MAC.... 12"?... terrible

Why the crappy color gamut? I know this is cool and all, but as a designer I have to say we definitely need more colors– not more contrast. Although admittedly the screens must be very nice [for a laptop], and I'm diggin the low power consumption.
U.Pseudonym @ Oct 17th 2007 2:43AM
It seems like every screen these days is using 6 bits and using dithering to get the colours up to 16mil. I don't think it's particular to this monitor.
They're cheaper and essentially necessary in order to produce the response times people expect.

just wondering, how do typical laptop screens compare (spec wise)?
feffrey @ Oct 17th 2007 2:31AM
Once again you prove your stupidity by trying to be first and failing miserably as usual.
on topic why is is White-led? I would think that all back lights would be white.
Rick @ Oct 17th 2007 10:37AM
No, some are blue and some are yellow. A White LED would be it's close to 6500k and a clean white.

White LED (= Blue + Phosphor) vs RGB LEDs. There aren't any RGB LED backlit LCDs.

I'm just sad that the 15 in isn't WUXGA... ah what glory 1920x1200 would look like in a laptop with 10k contrast... to bad the color saturation is crap... i wonder if the contrast would make up for the not so awesome color saturation..
Rik @ Oct 17th 2007 2:57AM
Yeah, 15,4 WUXGA is so sweet, took a little while but now that i'm used to it (got it on a Dell D830).
yenraf @ Oct 17th 2007 10:43AM
I only wish I had that, I've only got 1680x1050 on a 15.4... but on my next laptop...
Andrew H. @ Oct 17th 2007 3:06AM
put that on the EEE PC and my life is complete

Looks like Samsung's doing science for those who are still alive!

Give me RGB LED or give me...nothing.

I wish manufacturers would give realistic contrast ratio ratings...

LED backlit has been on the market for a little while now.
But WHITE LED is NEW.
Why "white".
Because the regular LED's do not have the perfect natural white light color spec.
These new LED's do!!!
It's the first panel to use this new type of LED.
Just technology continuing to improve our gadgets.
Nathan @ Oct 17th 2007 2:27PM
Great, so we have more contrast... which is meaningless. I'd like to see just one Monitor manufacturer actually try to make a realistic array of colors. I don't want colors that blind me with their unnatural over-saturation. I want realistic colors out of the box.
