Leopard unboxed: it's a disc in a box
If you want a blowout, a blowout is what you'll get. Just as we did for Microsoft's Vista, we're serving up an unboxing of Apple's latest operating system hours before it's slated to go on sale. Thanks to the wonders of on-time early delivery, a certain individual managed to unbox his copy of Leopard already, and he's got the pictures to prove it. Click on to the read link to see what's waiting for you later today, but don't expect anything out of the ordinary, okay?

An Open Letter to Apple,
You say you want to go green, yet you have not offered a Download it yourself and Burn it option. I would buy it today if i could Download it and burn it. Granted I do not have DL media so you may need to spread it accross 2 DVDs god forbid, but I would pay the full price to download it and burn it. We live in an immediate gratification culture. This would also be an extremely green move. I think even M$ allows you to download vista to some extent, perhaps just upgrades, but still downloads none-the-less.

can anyone answer 2 questions i have?
1. Does Leopard have a Install key? I bought the family version becase I have 2 macs but, if there is no install key then I will just cancel and use the same copy of leopard on both macs
2. Can you use 1 external HD for Time machine backups on 2 machines? Or do I need seperate external HDs?
TIB @ Oct 26th 2007 12:33PM
John M: No, yes, no.
paragraph @ Oct 26th 2007 12:42PM
Does it work with my mac?

Step 1: Cut a hole in the box.
Step 2: Put your disc in the box.
Step 3: Have her open the box.
James @ Oct 26th 2007 9:47AM
That's the way you do it!!!
chris fredette @ Oct 26th 2007 9:55AM

Oh I get it...taking something that's like a year old and applying it to a new product....well done sir.
Matt @ Oct 26th 2007 9:46AM

FAN BOY WARS COMMENCE!
Rich @ Oct 26th 2007 9:47AM
God damn it. Mine has only just been shipped. Not expected to arrive until Monday. How come I miss out on all the fun...
Maybe because mine is the (almost) free upgrade (MBP less than a month old), I get lower priority.
Dale @ Oct 26th 2007 9:51AM
Did anyone else's copy come from Ontario of all places? According to the Fed Ex tracking, that's the origin of mine. It was in Skokie, IL last I checked (I'm in Chicago). EEE!
jus10 @ Oct 26th 2007 10:20AM
That's funny since mine came from SCHAUMBURG, IL and I'm in VA. It's out for delivery at the moment.
Jason Stewart @ Oct 26th 2007 10:23AM
Mine shipped from Canada as well. Unfortunately, my apartment number was the only thing on the ship-to address, so now I have to wait until Monday for it to arrive (even though the address is all there on the Apple confirmation receipt).
Needless to say I'm not a happy camper.
Johnny @ Oct 26th 2007 10:22AM
Mine came from Memphis, TN.
SoulkeepHL @ Oct 26th 2007 10:36AM
Heh, my buddy's copy came from Ontario, CA, and he lives in Arlington Heights, IL, which shares a border with Schaumburg, IL. Maybe it would have gotten here too quickly that way.
alf @ Oct 26th 2007 10:39AM
Are you sure it came from Canada? Ontario is a major shipping hub in California which may display as "ONTARIO,CA" in your tracking software.
Xee @ Oct 26th 2007 11:19AM
Hmm. Being that I'm from Schaumburg, I'm almost tempted to order one just to see how fast it gets here. ;)
Dale @ Oct 26th 2007 11:21AM
Aha! Ontario, California makes a lot more sense. I didn't realise such a place existed.
Ireland @ Oct 26th 2007 9:54AM
Even the box is cool, it's like the Guinness Book of Records!!
bollewolle @ Oct 26th 2007 9:56AM
Mine has been delivery at about 13h local time here in Belgium. Too bad I'm at work so I'll have to wait until later to enjoy Leopard. Still, I've got a full weekend to enjoy it so it's better then waiting until Monday :)
trigatch4 @ Oct 26th 2007 9:57AM
I watched the Leopard Demo and it looks pretty sweet. I absolutely HATE MACS but Leopard has me very, very intrigued.
I know you can run a Windows clone on a Mac, which I thought I might try just to see if Macs are what they're talked up to be. How about running a virtual version of Leopard on Windows?
easymac30 @ Oct 26th 2007 11:19AM
FAIL.
No, no winblows emulators of OS X.
no.
FAIL.

In Japan its past 6:00PM, so the sale already started. Here are some pictures of the launch at the Apple Store in Ginza:

Constable Odo @ Oct 26th 2007 12:00PM
So where's the geishas and miniskirted female greeters sweetly voicing Irasshaimase? Damn. Usually the Japanese know how to do things properly. They must be slipping. No wonder they don't sell many Macs over there. So darn ordinary.
Camperton @ Oct 26th 2007 3:46PM
Thanks drebes. I enjoyed those.
Odo... what the hell are you talking about? Japan is big on Macs.
TeddyN @ Oct 26th 2007 9:59AM
I think the box is ugly, what makes the packaging on other Apple products so sexy is that it is minimalist. That box looks distractingly shiny and reflective.
Still, it's the software itself that counts, and I'm wary of nice boxes after the sexy Windows Vista packaging...
Chrisphillers @ Oct 26th 2007 10:00AM
I think there is something wrong with your reading of the facts - the poll you made essentially has 54% of people wanting a simple review or even less. So please tell mewhy you are doing this again??
AmazingRobie @ Oct 26th 2007 10:14AM
hahahaha I can actually see the tears of frustration rolling down your cheeks hahahaha
I for one could care less what Engadget covers and how much of it as long as they cover other stuff along with the new Apple OS. It's kind of like the Harry Potter phenomenon of the OS world.
It doesn't bother me at all. Plus, I'm looking forward to buying a MacBook Pro next month. I sold my Dell Precision M90 with 4Gb of ram last month to a family member. It was a $3,500.00 machine only about a year old that I had bought brand new from Dell direct, but I let it go for half of what I paid for it because Leopard just looks like a lot of fun where all of the regular Windows PC's I've owned weren't since I don't like playing games. I like to do things like editing and animating.
jmattick @ Oct 26th 2007 10:24AM
For the same reason that 95% of all statistics are made up. ;)
John @ Oct 26th 2007 10:44AM
It's not that it's getting coverage, it's that we're getting told that - hold the phone - it comes on a DISC. And it was packaged in a BOX. Revolutionary, but what else could we expect from those pioneers at apple.
Colin @ Oct 26th 2007 10:49AM
60% of the time, it works EVERY time.
Matt @ Oct 26th 2007 10:00AM

@Amandyke @ Oct 26th 2007 11:02AM
The MacBook Pro will not be significantly lower spec'd. It will be higher because it’s 64 bit instead of 32. Everything else inside will be equivalent or higher.
It's my understanding that you can't install the Mac OS on a PC, otherwise, I would have already tried it. The Precision M90 is a laptop workstation not a desktop. Plus, yes, I sold it for less than half of what I paid for it to a family member, so it's not like I don't have access to it should I ever need it. Which is doubful that I will. But someone needed a laptop for their work and I wanted to switch anyway.
"Umm, good job I guess?"
Thanks! You betcha. I’m looking forward to it. I haven’t owned an Apple since the IIe.
Amandyke @ Oct 26th 2007 11:02AM
Ok wait.
So you sold a $3,500 year old laptop for half of what you paid. So that you could turn around and spend $1,500 on a significantly lower spec'd machine simply because you thought leopard looked fun.
So in essence you're going to pay ~$3,000 for a macbook when all you had to do was install a linux distribution or install Leopard onto your now sold Precision.
Umm, good job I guess?
toholio @ Oct 26th 2007 10:15AM
A big part of what makes MacOS X a joy to use and helps with its fantastic stability is the tight coupling with Apple's hardware.
Go ahead and run it on any old PC you find, if that'll keep you occupied, but don't expect it to give you any deep insight into the Mac experience.
toholio @ Oct 26th 2007 10:17AM
That was supposed to be in response to trigatch4. Not sure how I messed that up.
Bob S. @ Oct 26th 2007 10:19AM
Unboxing pictures are the stupidest part of the Internet.
It isn't that this particular unboxing picture is stupid, although it is.
But the people who created it know how stupid it is, and that's a step on the evolutionary trail.
The Big O @ Oct 26th 2007 10:22AM
Mine is stupid too. But hey...I've got to do something while my current HD backs up before the big install.
coffee @ Oct 26th 2007 10:23AM
where's my 10 bucks?
PowerLlama @ Oct 26th 2007 10:23AM
I just wanted to say you have the same USB hub as me.
