Leopard unboxed: it's a disc in a box
If you want a blowout, a blowout is what you'll get. Just as we did for Microsoft's Vista, we're serving up an unboxing of Apple's latest operating system hours before it's slated to go on sale. Thanks to the wonders of on-time early delivery, a certain individual managed to unbox his copy of Leopard already, and he's got the pictures to prove it. Click on to the read link to see what's waiting for you later today, but don't expect anything out of the ordinary, okay?
[Thanks, Ben]

Really, I hadn't heard. Is there a new OS for Mac?
;-)
YEAH! time to give apple more money for another upgrade WHOOO!
humm...
10.0 upgrade pay apple money
10.1 upgrade pay apple money
10.2 upgrade pay apple money
10.3 upgrade pay apple money
10.4 upgrade pay apple money
10.5 upgrade pay apple money
Is it me or did they find a way to get $200 bucks out of you every so often not to mention other purchases for your ipod or iphone, or iprinter, or iscanner, or isoftware products? It's not that much, really?
vs.
Microsoft: Pay me $300 once every 5 years to upgrade
vs
Linux: Just downloaded the ISO off of a torrent and use it already
Three different business models, three different OSes, three different experiences. It's not like we don't choose the bed we lay in.
Except that OS X is a Unix derivative just like all Linux distributions are a Unix derivative. So uhh... Not really all that different.
Agree there different models, and the look and feel are all different so pick what you like best:
1) Apple give me small amount of money all the time
2) MS: Give me more money once in a while
3) You can use it, just dont call us for help unless you want to pay the big bucks.
But isn't that what its all about no matter how you slice and dice it:
Step 1) Think of product
Step 2) ???
Step 3) PROFIT!! WHOO!
10.1 was a free upgrade to anyone who had 10.0
XP came out in 2001. Assuming you upgraded to the Ultimate version of Vista, that was a one time payment of $260 for one system.
Mac OS X 10.0.0 came out in 2001. If you were smart enough to get five-system licenses each time OS X was upgraded and split the cost with four other people, that's $1000/5 or $200 per system.
Not everyone will have bought every iteration of OS X, but not everyone will have been able to reduce costs with five-system licenses, so I am sure people have paid more on average to maintain OS X than Windows. However, Apple are far more pro-active about interim patching - instead of infrequent bulk updates that can break more than they fix, they do lots of little fixes.
Except when MS releases an "upgrade" 5 years down the road... it's going to be a buggy pile of crap that they're saying "eh, let's get it to market and fix it later..." I'd much rather pay a fraction (and it's not $200 bucks) of what MS charges more frequently to actually have a system that is leaps and bounds ahead of the game.
But, then I'm just a stupid Mac user who sold all my PC's the day after I came to my senses almost 10 years ago and have never looked back. Man it sucks having a system that doesn't crash on me. Oh, and how do I ever miss needing to run extraneous software in the background constantly searching for viruses... Oh, those were the days....
my local apple store is closed - I will be banging on the doors at 6pm (UK time)
I'm also buying a new iMac...!
do some research as the new imacs have lots of problems. Including but not limited to the screen.. I have the last gen imac g5 and a newer intel based macbook Both run fantasic.
@ Matt
"this was also done for vista.."
No, that was Jack in a Box
Software comes in BOXES still?
LOL!
DISCS COME IN BOXES?
*woosh* that was the sound of the joke going right over your head.
That was a joke? Jokes need humor :(
Nonono... You need humor. Everything is funny to somebody. It's up to you to see the humor in all situations.
I did the "Up to Date" upgrade on 10/16 and it still hasn't shipped yet. I assume being I'm in Atlanta that it will come from the Memphis, TN distribution center. Which means if ships today, I won't see it until next Wed. at the earliest. It sucks even more because I work right across from the Perimeter Apple Store. They should have allowed users who qualified to take their receipt in their local Apple Store and get a copy UTD for $9.95 as opposed to making folks have to order to get it at the UTD price.
Curses!
Just tried to install (DVD arrived this morning), Just works my arse!!!
I now have an attractive blue screen with mouse pointer - very helpful! I'm not the only one either! (Search for leopard install blue screen)

... when of cause it comes back on line! :-p big problem?!
Thank goodness for boot camp and my XP OS else I wouldn't be able to write this!! ;-)
Apple discussion boards shut down for "updating." Let us know if your post and pics are "updated out."
No worries ... that's how things "just work."
I hope the packaging is recycled paper printed with soy inks and that everyone either recycles or composts it. Also, I hope I don't get flamed by the tailpipe-huggers for hoping such a thing.
My university's computer store's selling them tonight. I asked them for the price and they said they will be selling Leopard at $69. I'm glad that I didn't order it online.
Just received my copy as well from quebec city... received it AT 10H45 AM via purolator !
Thanks apple !
Tell me it has a2dp support. Anybody kno?
Way to steal the "Leopard Unboxed" headline from Popular Mechanics.
http://www.popularmechanics.com
Okay... for all the uninformed... The Engadget headline is clearly a spoof of a Saturday Night Live sketch with Justin Timberlake where he sings a song about a d1ck in a box.
Welcome to the New World Order. 100% recycled cardboard and plastic DVD. Apple does everything so elegantly. The perfect box for the perfect OS. It's true Vista used a nice box, but unfortunately they didn't follow through with a perfect OS. Tsk, tsk.
One look at this holographic box says, "Hey, I'm Leopard, watch me roar and cut Vista to shreds." Amazing. Totally freakin' amazing.
If you love it so much, why don't you marry it?
What, no "spoiler warning"!!!?
@John M: yes, you could return your family pack version of Leopard and instead buy a single version, then install it on two machines. That however will be theft, and may have unpleasant consequences for you. Your choice.
i like that old keyboard.
OMG, a disc in a box! Apple is so revolutionary! Ok, now I'll go back to blowing Stevie Jobs.
The first thing that came to my head when I read the title of the feed was: "NO WAI!"
Funniest headline ever!
surprisingly i ordered mine last night oh say 11:30 and it got here today about 2 hours ago...
Unboxing pictures now with install screen shots. Woot woot. Up and running on 10.5 right now.
