ASUS' Eee PC now being served at NewEgg
If you're still hanging in there even after the price-hike, then you'll be happy to know that the Asus Eee PC just busted free on-line over at NewEgg. No sign of it at Best Buy yet so you're stuck with a $399 4GB model (only) at the moment. A $10.33 shipping insult is added to the failed expectation injury starting today.
Update: Sold out! Of course, NewEgg's initial allotment could have been one unit for all we know. Fortunately for those on the hunt, it looks like NewEgg expects to restock tomorrow.

God dammit! Why can't Newegg ship internationally?!
PsychoPingu @ Oct 31st 2007 9:09AM
Ebuyer.com are getting stock of them in the UK for ~£200 from 12th Nov.
Jason @ Oct 31st 2007 10:27AM
Yeah! I've got some Canadian super-dollars I'd love to send them.
GameboyRMH @ Oct 31st 2007 1:07PM
...or even accept international credit cards?
Jeremy @ Oct 31st 2007 2:57PM
For us Canadians NCIX has it. They sent out an email yesterday morning announcing more stock on Nov. 1.
Marko @ Oct 31st 2007 8:09AM
Yes, thats double the the price initially announced for a 4GB/512mb model. But don't blame Asus, it is not their fault that the screen price has gone up by a whopping 10 dollars!
DickHardknocks @ Oct 31st 2007 8:11AM
ASUS has been turning out some fine products lately.
I would buy one - except for the fact that I do not trust the brand name and I'd worry about maintenance if a unit should break down on me.
If I buy HP, Compaq, SONY or Dell I KNOW what their warranties are and where to send a defective product.
I hope a big company buys ASUS so I can trust them.
Johny @ Oct 31st 2007 8:25AM
you obviously have no idea what kind of company asus is.
for example asustek, another company involved with asus is manufacturing all the macbooks for apple.
asus has one of the best customer service world wide.
mseiter @ Oct 31st 2007 8:25AM
Damn the declining dollar, I bet the thing is like 50 Canadian Dollars or 20 Euros...
fourthletter @ Oct 31st 2007 8:53AM
Why post on a tech site if you don't actually know anything about tech ?
Asus are one of the biggest PC companies in the world, They make a large percentage of the worlds motherboards, and as another knowledgable poster said the macbook for Apple.
Why oh why do we have to read pointless uninformed opinions on a geek site, come on people at least try googling about these subjects before they start posting!
SjD @ Oct 31st 2007 9:19AM
Yup, Asus is a big company, unfortunately they do make products that go bad. And the tech forums havent always been the greatest of help.
Check out the BBB report for Asus. http://goldengate.bbb.org/WWWRoot/Report.aspx?site=99&bbb=1116&firm=16870
Dont know about you but Im not sure I would do business with a company that has so many complaints listed under Warranty, Product Issues, and Customer Service.
Sure, the product you bought was awsome, just hope you never need support or repair.
Tony @ Oct 31st 2007 12:31PM
I can't believe you trust Dell. LOL.
Kevin @ Oct 31st 2007 4:47PM
I hate HP/Compaq - stupid r4000 I had to send back 3 times, first time a slight (2ft) toss onto my bed resulted in the pot-metal battery clips breaking (rendering the latch so that it would never clasp a battery again), second time screen power issue (mfg problem), third/final time ram compatibility (the mobo doesnt support corsair - so the mobo got fried from a ram upgrade).
Luckily the third time it was within the 2yr accidental-protection warranty by a week - but they called to tell me I was out of warranty so I read the girl (American! yay no-accents!) my warranty number and she said - "wait, you're under warranty I'll tell the repair department to service it then."
Thanks to their network of warranty numbers, serial numbers, trouble numbers ect. I have a desk full of just numbers! I HATE COMPAQ/HP - buy the asian brands!
Kal-El @ Oct 31st 2007 7:34PM
You trust SONY?! Haha, why don't you buy one of their CDs and play it on your computer? ..dick.
strider_mt2k @ Oct 31st 2007 8:20AM
Do they have it in black?
Cole @ Oct 31st 2007 8:25AM
Yes
bk00 @ Oct 31st 2007 8:44AM
No, Newegg doesn't list the black model. ASUS supposedly has manufactured it in black so I guess we'll have to wait even more for it to become available.
Andir3.0 @ Oct 31st 2007 8:55AM
Does it still have the 900MHz Intel Celeron processor in it? Newegg doesn't list the processor speed, which is weird if you ask me. I guess they are marketing it as a PDA instead of a PC by listing stprage space and memory, but no details on the CPU.
strider_mt2k @ Oct 31st 2007 8:22AM
In all seriousness, it wasn't THAT long ago that I paid around 400 bucks for a Sony Clie PEG-TH55!
Sure it's bigger, but look at the bang for the buck difference!
Like it or dislike it, this future stuff has it's moments, doesn't it?
JAmerican @ Oct 31st 2007 10:11AM
Oh the good ol' days. This looks like a great upgrade to my UX50 :). Although the batt life is probably the same lol.
JAmerican
Alan Strangis @ Oct 31st 2007 3:30PM
LOL! Shout out to strider and Jamerican (Antboy from 1src) here.
I'm thinking it's a great companion to my (non Palm now) phone.
JAmerican @ Oct 31st 2007 6:02PM
CLIE reunion. LOL. It so sad how Palm could have been something but they didn't seize the moment. Too busy with minute updates to Treos.
Legodude522 @ Oct 31st 2007 7:16PM
Hey guys! Did I tell you the Tapwave Zodiac still pwns. :-P
shifuimam @ Oct 31st 2007 8:24AM
I was thinking that the $399 price point was for the 8GB/1GB model.
Pass. :(
aedanna @ Oct 31st 2007 10:32AM
EXACTLY!
What gives??? First they raise the price from $199 to $399, now they cut the memory and storage in half??? I thought the $399 was for the 8G flash, 1G memory.
Phil Perman @ Oct 31st 2007 8:25AM
For anyone in the UK, overclockers.co.uk and ebuyer.com both have it listed for just shy of £220 shipping on the 12th November.
I'm very tempted to get one, simply because of its tiny size. I don't need one, but I still want it.
Homeboy @ Oct 31st 2007 8:33AM
As much as I wanted and still want this laptop Asus has turned me off. The whole attraction with is was the 199 dollar price promised and I pictured myself buying a 250 dollar zune and a 199 dollar Eee in November.
But Asus has jacked up the price to $400 and that's for the 4GB version, WTF!!!!! Add a 8GB CF/SD card for $100 and the whole bizz ends at close to 5 Benjamins.
Sure it's still cheaper than an 11 inch Sony laptop but you can't help yourself from felling a bit disappointed. $200 dollars is a no brainier but $400 is a big chunk of money.
Sorry Asus but you won't be getting my money.
Billy Fiul @ Oct 31st 2007 10:31AM
I hear that, homeboy.
OddManOut @ Oct 31st 2007 12:51PM
Yeah, if this was a pre-meditated marketing decision (ie announce ridiculously low price to generate media buzz and consummer interest and then jack up the price when it comes time to pay) I think it's backfired.
Now that dang thing is available but the price has doubled the most pronounced feeling I have about it isn't enthusiasm, anticipation, or desire. It's disapointment.
Not a very strong selling point...
Othello @ Oct 31st 2007 2:14PM
I'm willing to bet that they're going to drop the price to expected levels in 6 months to a year. They're probably testing the waters and doing the usual early adopter wallet squeeze.
bk00 @ Oct 31st 2007 8:44AM
I REALLY want this device, but I'll wait until the black model is available. I was hoping for a $350 4G and a $399 8G, I hope we'll get a little price break (maybe black friday?) too.
Balzac2m @ Oct 31st 2007 8:50AM
Hopefully they'll release a 10" version of this thing someday. I know the 1001 was cancelled, but still.
The lid is big enough to house a 10" screen. I just don't want to go back to less than SVGA with a notebookdisplay, no matter how small it is.
Comeon Asus, for this price, you could afford a 10" XGA-panel.
Brandon @ Oct 31st 2007 8:59AM
This SUCKS!!! I was all hyping up the eee pc to my friends on how it would be under $300 for a nice ultra portable pc, and now this! Shame on you Newegg. Wasn't it released that distributors were able to buy this for around $200??? So now Newegg is trying to double their money??? WTH
bombastinator @ Oct 31st 2007 9:20AM
remember how the iPhone came out for 600 then dropped to 400? There is huge amounts of buzz about this thing and it wouldn't surprise me if Asus isn't trying out the fanboy market.
Chewy @ Oct 31st 2007 3:23PM
Blame Asus, not Newegg.
CRH @ Oct 31st 2007 9:04AM
I would still rather pay 5 bills for the 10" Foleo. but no, it was not to be. Anyone know where a guy could get his hands on one of the pre production units that were floating around?
dj-kenpo @ Oct 31st 2007 9:10AM
would have made a nice travelling machine for a little programming, but only at $200. it's a toy, not a primary machine.
Copperhead @ Oct 31st 2007 9:20AM
So they double the price, take forever to release it and still expect the same amount of enthusiasm we had when it was announced?
For another couple hundred bucks you could get a halfway decent laptop, use any OS you choose and not some jacked up Linux mess. Damn shame, I had high hopes for this thing.
ian_h_uk @ Oct 31st 2007 9:38AM
im just chuffed there not screwing the uk on this one!! woohoo....same price as the states!
not sure why this costs so much still, especially with the £300 laptops you can pick up these days....hmmmmm.......still tempted!
1 up for us english foke, finally a manufacturer that screws everyone in the world not just us! haha.
Mike @ Oct 31st 2007 10:13AM
Why would anyone buy this when they can get a bigger, faster laptop for about the same price?
PG @ Oct 31st 2007 10:14AM
For $399.00 I can buy a REAL laptop, thankyouverymuch.
brawa @ Oct 31st 2007 10:50AM
Is that real laptop going to have solid-state memory and weigh under 2 lbs? It's not meant to replace your desktop/primary laptop, but to provide an ultra-portable yet still productive alternative.
Just think of one scenario: instead of a new college student buying an overpriced laptop to function both as a desktop and portable (as I and many others do), you can buy an EeePC AND a solid desktop for the same or a lower price--and be even more portable.
PG @ Oct 31st 2007 10:59AM
Judging by the rated battery life, having solid state disk is not going to make a substantial difference when compared to laptops with conventional HDD's. There are laptops that can be purchased for $399.00 (sometimes even without rebates) and even with the added weight they would make more financial sense. Sure, laptop will be heavier but on the upside you'll get: bigger screen, comfortable keyboard, relatively inexpensive hardware expansion options, more software choices. I am not saying that devices like Eee do not have a niche to occupy, but at this pricepoint they can not compete even with the cheapest of laptops.
Mark @ Oct 31st 2007 12:08PM
And a laptop would have a 15.4" screen instead of 7". The choice is clear.
muriani @ Oct 31st 2007 10:34AM
First off, the vendors AREN'T getting these for $200 (cost is quite a bit higher), especially this model.
As of right now, the 512MB/4GB model is the only one that Asus has currently released, the others will be available soon.
www.directron.com has had stock available for pre-order two days ago (shipping today), and they're going like hotcakes.
I wasn't initially impressed with the prototype I saw a few weeks back, but with the Linux system they ship on the machine, I have to say I really like it. It is quite easy to use, response time is good, and the size really counts for a lot in portablity. It's no desktop replacement, but for browsing the web, chatting, email, even music and video playback (a recent review stated that it could push out 720p mpeg-4 no problem), it's a quite capable machine.
I'll likely be getting one.
aedanna @ Oct 31st 2007 11:38AM
Muriani,
With regards to your comment, "This is the second-to-highest model, MSRP $399".
Can you explain this report?
http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/17/asus-eee-pc-priced-299-to-399/
So are you saying that Engadget's reporting is wrong? Or that Asus has increased their price again in the last two weeks?
I am really pissed that the top of the line model must now be more than $399! This is classic bait and switch.
ToniCipriani @ Oct 31st 2007 10:45AM
It's the market at work. People want it, people will pay the price for it. Simple demand issue.
holycow @ Oct 31st 2007 10:56AM
remove the webcam! make it cheaper ASUS!
aedanna @ Oct 31st 2007 10:56AM
Newegg appears to have jacked up the price, then add to that Newegg's return policy:
This is our Detailed Desktop PC, Notebook and Tablet PC Return Policy. Under this policy all Desktop PCs/Notebooks/Tablet PCs are non-refundable, and this supersedes all other return policies. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy.
Go screw RottenEgg, as much as I hate WorstBuy, I guess I'll wait and go that route. I can return it minus a 15% restocking fee at any local WorstBuy.
muriani @ Oct 31st 2007 11:09AM
Newegg hasn't jacked up the price. This is the second-to-highest model, MSRP $399.
Check your facts, please.
