ASUS' Eee PC now being served at NewEgg
If you're still hanging in there even after the price-hike, then you'll be happy to know that the Asus Eee PC just busted free on-line over at NewEgg. No sign of it at Best Buy yet so you're stuck with a $399 4GB model (only) at the moment. A $10.33 shipping insult is added to the failed expectation injury starting today.
Update: Sold out! Of course, NewEgg's initial allotment could have been one unit for all we know. Fortunately for those on the hunt, it looks like NewEgg expects to restock tomorrow.

Newegg hasn't jacked up the price. This is the second-to-highest model, MSRP $399.
Check your facts, please.
In all fairness, www.allasus.com appears to have the same price. But there is NO WAY I'm paying $150 non-refundable deposit just to add my name to a list.

remove the webcam! make it cheaper ASUS!
Pretty sweet device. At $399, if it was black and had an ExpressCard slot and support for a mobile broadband card, I'd buy one.
It's got Mini PCI Express, for which there seem to be several broadband cards floating around. Linux support is questionable of course, but if you install XP you should be set.
Hey guys can you explain to me the purpose of this little device. Im not knocking it but I dont understand what your supposed to do with just 4gb. Am I missing something here? Is it a laptop computer, pmp or a UMPC? Once again im not hating I just want to get a better idea of functions that can be done with this device. With only 4gb it doesnt seem like you could hold many files or install programs. Someone please enlighten my in the dark ass.
You can do pretty much everything you would with a normal laptop.
The best way is to think of it as an inexpensive UMPC in ultra-compact notebook form factor.
With the included Linux system, most of the apps oe might need are already installed, and if you need more storage you can throw a 4GB SD card in for other stuff.
It fuctions as a PMP as well, just use the SD card for media. You can fit a few DVD-quality movies on that no problem.
Web browsing, email, word processing, chat/IM, skype, media playback and streaming, it does these out of the box and more. The software installaiton and removal system looks online for new software you can add just by downloading.
It's meant to be like your secondary PC, for someone who doesn't need something super-expensive or -powerful, such as teenagers who just need it for word processing, surfing the web, and instant messaging..such as me :)
So there isn't going to be an 8GB model?
And btw, if the storage space isn't enough, just plug in a USB hard drive to it and duct tape it to the bottom. Problem solved.
Hey guys, here a review of the unit including a LOT of screenshots of the OS:

Can anyone suggest an online forum that focuses on Asus Eee PC issues?
www.umpcportal.com is the only one that I've found that comes close, but sub-forum on just the Eee PC.
@ adedanna: http://forum.eeeuser.com
Very busy forum, lots of people hard at work dissecting the hardware, OS, and apps
Google, much?
http://www.eeeuser.com/
@ adedanna: Check out notebookreview.com forums...they have a pretty active Asus sub forum.
@Ryan: I saw the Pcperspective review which should be reading for anyone buying. There are alot of Pros. But thing things that made me caustios on this PC is that upgrades are under Asus control...I don't really understand why they are you out of all that Linux has in other software. I assume that will be hacked? Also curious how this handles codecs and things for all the different media sources...no clear mention.
@aedanna
Yes, the reporting is wrong. This is the 4GB/512MB model, not the 8GB/1GB model. The vendors aren't jacking the prices, Asus has.
It's possible the price will drop, seeing that they can mass produce more based on how sales have been.
Being inside on this, I assure you these are the facts. Plus there's logic involved.. 4 models between $300 and $400? So each model is $25 more than the previous? Doesn't make much sense to me.
And as far as Mr. Nick Waringa goes, just because it doesn't hold value to you, doesn't mean it hold as much or more value to others. I'm not an Asus fanboy, and as I said I wasn't impressed initially with the device at all. After getting to use one for a bit (no Asus representative or salesperson present for pitch anything), my opinion changed purely on user experience.
There are some unboxing pics here:

Does anyone have a link to better pictures of people actually using this laptop? I am curious about size...pictures related to people always help visualize.
Saaaweeet. Just ordered one with rush processing and overnight shipping. If I am going to pay (what some think is too much) for a tiny notebook, why not go all out. Hopefully it will show up tomorrow. Yay, I have been looking forward to a wee-puter for so long. Thanks Engadget for the news and Newegg for getting their act together and selling these before anyone else. I bet they are all gone before the end of the day,

Your "logic" is flawed.
Hey Guys! This Eee is awesome! I made on online interactive Test Drive for it too! So you can test out it's unique interface.

Yeah nice, but does it run Windows XP?
Yes, yes it does.
ok, so $400 for a half-assed "UMPC" with no touchscreen, short battery life, barely passable processing power with only 512RAM and 4GB of storage? what's the point of this thing? it does half the things that cheaper full-featured laptops do at a higher cost, and less things that subcompact notebooks do at half the performance.
i'm still very intrigued by the UMPC concept, but this is nowhere near what the platform could be.
Find me a full-size laptop that size withOUT a celeron processor for the same price.
Which UMPC do you know of that costs anywhere near $399, and has significantly better specs and battery life than the Eee PC?
NONE. They all have weak processors and 7" screens and START at $1000.
I'll wait for the Nokia N810. Now that it has a keyboard and decent memory, maybe they'll port OpenOffice to it.
I am going to wait until January for the EEE PC 1001 with the 10 inch screen.
Beware early adopters =PP
Most reports say this model will be vapor due to too many similar models. Jan isn't that far away for nobody to have seen it yet. Unlikely it will be out that quickly (if ever)
FYI it's back "in stock" as of 15:55 MDST. I just ordered.
As of 4:09PM on 10/31, we have 32 of these in stock. Sorry but we don't ship to the US, Canada only. Go to www.memoryexpress.com for details
Woot!!!! Us canadians finally get some love too!!!!

I just ordered my eee pc from newegg, they have recently gone back in stock. The total was 410.02 and said it would be here in Chicago in 2 days.
Overall not a bad deal for a umpc equivilant...
This has an ethernet port... 802.11 b and g... cut some cost and size and get rid of the damn dial-up connection.
I also saw it in a local computer store nearby PC Club I think. Check www.pcclub.com if they still have it in stock.
engadget's starting to sound a little bitter me thinks :)
to aedanna: engadget's reporting might be wrong...it's entirely possible...
either way, the top of the line model isn't worth it....for $25 or so you can upgrade your ram to a 1GB, and for about $40 your can add a 4GB SDHC card to the side....so for $65 you can reach the specs of the $450-499 model. and for a hundred or so cheaper, you can drop the webcam and upgrade your battery later....either way, there's an EEE for everyone...it's amazing how many people are bitching over this...if the price is too expensive for you, you never wanted it (entirely) for it's intended purpose of giving people that needed/wanted a tiny, usable laptop the option of *NOT* spending $2000....and the EEE fits that completely....the "shame on asus" and "i can get a $500 so and so that has much better specs" need not apply here...sorry.
This is the point of the eee, I took mine to the pub the other day, I could have taken my £1000 "OQO model 2" which runs vista but it's too small to see the screen properly and the keyboard makes my wrists ache after about 10mins. I could have taken my £1200 Dell laptop but it's too heavy to carry. So I took my £340 eee and it was just right, unfortunatly I didn't get much work done as people kept wanting to look at it and ask questions.
