Asus Eee PC unboxed
Asus's Eee PC is clearly making a big splash, and now that units are starting to arrive in homes everywhere the inevitable unboxing photos are starting to arrive. We've already seen the guts of this little lappie, so now it's time to see some lucky punter open their own unit and splay the battery, mini-charger, and driver disks. Nothing particularly surprising here, but if you're waiting for your own unit to arrive or for stock to replenish, we know you won't be able to get enough of these pics.

Is it just me or are the prices that NewEgg and Best Buy offering higher than MSRP? I thought the fully loaded 8GB with 3.5 hrs was supposed to be $400, but it seems like they are offering the 4GB with 3.5hrs for this price.
Mile @ Nov 4th 2007 2:23PM
Just buy it and get a lawyer lined up for later. Hasn't the iphone taught you anything?
Michael Geary @ Nov 4th 2007 6:12PM
Do you know what the "S" in "MSRP" stands for? :-)
Andrew @ Nov 4th 2007 2:27PM
You sir are a douche bag

Aweet! Is it true aout the sim card slot? How would it use it.. phone or data only?
melloncollie @ Nov 4th 2007 3:11PM
Not at all. Where'd you hear that?
Daniel @ Nov 4th 2007 8:27PM

I hope this gets down to the original price projection soon. I reallllly want this for 200 bucks.
Reader @ Nov 4th 2007 2:52PM
I don't think Andrew really deserves to be minused. So the photographer sucks at taking photos, but no reason to go bash him when he spent time doing it for other peoples' benefit. He already has the laptop, he doesn't need pictures of it.
Mr. Picklesworth @ Nov 4th 2007 2:55PM
I hate to say it, but with the exception of keyboards, those smaller devices are holding their own in quite a few ways.
Hopefully Asus will push out a bigger-screened model some day, because that's really the only place I can fault this thing on so far :)
labrats5 @ Nov 4th 2007 3:19PM
Asus said that they would release a 10" version in 2008. That is the only reason why I haven't bought one of these yet.
js @ Nov 4th 2007 3:06PM
Can we like, have an option to not post every single Asus EEE news in iEngadget?
Sander de Regt @ Nov 4th 2007 3:16PM
There's an iEngadget?
loci @ Nov 4th 2007 3:16PM
i, for one, welcome our new overlord
Mike @ Nov 4th 2007 3:29PM
wow sir, can you teach me how to be that witty?
Jeff P. @ Nov 4th 2007 10:33PM
OK then, just what news will Engadget have? Nobody wants any Apple news. Now you don't want EEE news. I've got an idea!! Why don't you post a list of the news YOU want and then they can just post THAT!! Gads, why is it so freekin hard for people to just NOT READ something if they're not interested?
Michael @ Nov 4th 2007 3:37PM
@Gadgie:

might clear up some stuff. Apparently the price went up because of an alleged LCD price increase.
There are four different configurations listed on the Wikipedia entry for the Eee PC.

Hey, if you guys want to test drive the Eee's Cool interface, visit: http://www.honeypothack.com/eee/internet.htm
Mile @ Nov 4th 2007 4:25PM
I'm never clicking on that link no matter how many times it gets posted.
Mile @ Nov 4th 2007 4:37PM
Okay, I clicked it. Finally. Very cool!
JBrown @ Nov 4th 2007 6:34PM
:D 500,000 clicks can't be wrong.
Dean @ Nov 4th 2007 4:13PM
That thing is hideous... cool idea though.
james @ Nov 4th 2007 5:16PM
Thanks for the info. I've been considering this as a travel PC, as all I usually do on the road is write to my blog, check email, and search for businesses and restaurants.
Not sold yet as I want to try in person - but maybe...

This thing is really cheap and ugly. Fujitsu makes way better sub notebook.
Fred @ Nov 5th 2007 3:34PM
Does Fujitsu make a model that is 2 lbs, has an SSD disk, and costs just $400?
Didn't think so.
Devron @ Nov 4th 2007 6:27PM
I'm loving it.... cheap, flexible... something you can keep with you on the go and not worry about it getting stolen. Quick boot up times (saw on YouTube).... and an SD slot that support SDHC.
My only question is, "Has anyone tried to put Ubuntu on this yet?"
luke @ Nov 4th 2007 7:58PM
Apparently Ubuntu works:

is there a way to play Warcraft 1 and 2 and starcraft on that little lappy?
Ayle @ Nov 4th 2007 8:04PM

tnkgrl @ Nov 4th 2007 8:06PM
1) These are my pictures, from my Flickr account, for my blog post:
http://tnkgrl.wordpress.com/2007/11/03/unboxing-the-asus-701-eee/
2) I was playing around with my new Sony Ericsson K850i 5 megapixel cameraphone, purposely using the macro and not using the flash.
3) I'm female, so please stop using "he".
Steve Jobs @ Nov 4th 2007 8:09PM
Yeah, but can it play Doom?
s1pacrat @ Nov 5th 2007 12:39AM
If that thing could play doom out of the box I would probably have it already...
I'm sure there would be a way to put doom on it though :D
jwtrooper @ Nov 5th 2007 3:36AM
Wow, my old Metrobook SLT was way ahead of it's time...
Would love to play around with one of these Eee's if they didn't raise the price.
Charlotte @ Nov 5th 2007 6:09AM
I've said it before and I'll say it again - Asus is onto a winner here! I've shown my new baby to everyone I meet, and not a single person has been able to find a negative word to say.
My only problem is that the backspace key is hard to reach, and as I'm still getting used to the size of the keyboard, backspace is something that I use relatively regularly.
gyffes @ Nov 5th 2007 8:27AM
Mine, according to UPS, should arrive tomorrow.
I bought the 4gb one basically to serve until Apple releases the iMate (eMate replacement).
Having spent several hours last night playing with the gOS release, I think this Asus, with Xandros, and gOS, built on Gutsy7.10, (man, I hope the hardware isn' crap on that...) really are onto something. Apples are lovely but you pay for both the visual quality and the build quality. Getting people online and/or wordprocessing/emailing with software that "just works" without gouging them is an excellent goal.
Now, if we could just drop the cost of broadband...
superfresh @ Nov 5th 2007 8:55AM
Can't wait to get one of these... but two questions. Can anyone answer:
1. When do the other colors on the front of the box come out?
2. When in 2008 will the 10" appear?
superfresh @ Nov 5th 2007 9:04AM
Also...When, or how, do I get XP on this thing? Not that I want it. Just curious.
samdha @ Nov 5th 2007 3:59PM
1. Right now they only have white. Probably in April.
2. They are saying April
3. www.eeeuser.com the forums will answer that- and anything else

If you want to instal cp on it. Simply use a usb cd/dvd-rom and boot up the pc with the usb cd/dvd drive. Then start the setup. NOTE: afther instal of xp you will have about 2gb left on your SSD disk drive. (If you have the ver with 4gb) If you run windows update and instal all updates for windows and programs you will have about 1.2-1.5gb left. I recomend 512mb ram or more if you instal win xp. Want to know more just ask.
Mek @ Dec 2nd 2007 8:28AM
can i play warcraft 3 , counter-strike or guitar pro or use standard windows application on that eee pc of asus, co'z i'm thinking of having one of those 8gb series of them
Frode @ Dec 2nd 2007 1:16PM
You can play some games. But note that 3DFX games (open glide) Not all will work. The grafic card on the Eee computer is not the best. But Red alert 2, Doom2, Dune 2, Carmageddon 2 works fine. Allmovst every programs and games can be installed to a SD/SDHC chip. Then play/start them. But allso note that you can upgrate the SSD 4gb to a 8gb or 16GB disk on this Eee 701 mini pc. High programs or games that request allot of 3DFX/open glide will problety not work normaly. Some will work. Some will not. But movst programs works fine. My model is: Asus Eee model 701 with: 1gb ram, 900mhz 8gb hd.
Mek @ Dec 3rd 2007 2:43AM

Frode @ Dec 3rd 2007 1:34PM
I will test dota-frozen throne as soon I get my Eee back. My best friend have it now. He will be back in 9 days Then I'll test it no problemo :) Did you allso Know you can instal a mini ver of windows xp that takes only 667mb of the disk space. But I dont recomend it. I did use professional. If there is more just ask Mek ;) Allso if you need tips to upgrate the Eee 701 just ask.
Mek @ Dec 4th 2007 8:51AM
that's all for now, thanks by the way.. my only purpose for a laptop is for ggclient and guitarpro only so i should not buy an expensive one.
Frode @ Jan 13th 2008 12:22PM
I see. Then the eee 701 is fine for you. When the eee with 10" comes out I will by that one and sell the 7". The eee 701 is ok for me but I want the model with larger screen (10") It will some out januar/feb 2008. Btw I have shrinked xp to match all asus eee pc :) Takes only 850mb of disk space afther install. For more info just ask :)
Mek @ Jan 16th 2008 7:21AM
