PlayStation 2 modchip on a memory card now on sale
It's not like folks haven't been tinkering with something like this, but it's quite refreshing to see an actual product emerge that promises to deliver on the claims we've been hearing about. Apparently, the Memor 32 memory card enables PlayStation 2 owners across the globe to effectively chip their console without requiring a single power tool. The unit promises to allow gamers to load / unload save games (not to mention backups, homebrews, etc.) to and from their PC, and there's even a built-in USB connector to make things even simpler for you. 'Course, we'd still like to see one of these in action before lauding it too enthusiastically, but if you're willing to take a chance, MrModChips will gladly take your £33.49 ($70).[Via PS2News]

Finally i can play Another Century Episode 3 and SRW OG without the tedious swap disk
Shinogu @ Nov 7th 2007 7:05AM
Misinterpretation 101?
The thing's just a memory card that can connect to computers and swap game save data. There's some external file stuffs to slap on the memory card first, and those are PAL-only right now.

This gadget legally allow to manage savegames but off the records also permit to run backup games in a unmodified console.
Remember that in some countries modchip are illegal but a simple memory is allowed.
Kurian @ Nov 7th 2007 8:29AM
Now we just have to wait for an "anonymous" hacker group to show up and release a new firmware or whatever for this thing which lets you do illegal things.
Just like the DMS tea..I mean Team Toxic released the Toxic OS firmware for the DMS chips.

Without additional "3rd party", "unnoffical" software that isnt' ready yet, this is just for copying game saves (and acts as a 32 MB memory card), but what I'm really writing about is that £33.49 is not equal to $70. Currently it's equivalent to $48.74. You do have to add in shipping, though. What you were thinking of is that it was already said to cost £49.95 which was about $70.
PistolPeet @ Nov 7th 2007 7:33AM
I don't know where you get your FX rates from...
According to xe.com: 1 GBP = 2.09998 USD
Bloomberg: 1 GBP = 2.09879 USD
So it's slightly over $70
SteveJ @ Nov 7th 2007 8:15AM
Oops - I was seeing 'euros' where there were 'pounds'

I had one, it was delicious! *burrp*

this is actually old news, I guess I read about it 2 weeks ago? (not so sure)...this is the "hacker team" message (their webpage is down):
Finally we are almost done!
We had some last minute issues and decided to test them deeper to be sure that all was working good.
We are still completing the User interface and will have to need a couple more days to finish up.
We decided meantime to release this first BETA PAL ONLY version of the software for everyone to test.
This should start to give you a good idea about how easy and flexible the final release wil be, but remember, is only a BETA!!
Download the file Here
Final version is due this week.
The Memento Hack Team.

The news is that its finally on sale, not that it exists.
Jesse @ Nov 7th 2007 8:14AM
i just use the cogswap, its more troublesome to do all the swapping but i saved $70
riggs @ Nov 7th 2007 8:43AM
i have a question, if i buy this will i be able to play burned games on my ps2 (original not slim)?
SteveJ @ Nov 7th 2007 9:19AM
With the Memento hack, yes, in theory. Note that you will have to patch your backup iso's for this to work. Again, in theory, as I have never used it, plus there is currently no NTSC version of Memento. The only version available is an early PAL-only beta. Moreover, they said the "final version" would be released later that week, but now it's the next week and no final version nor any news update on their web page. Has anyone actually been able to try the PAL beta?
Erwos @ Nov 7th 2007 9:07AM
I'm certainly _interested_, but I'd like to see the NTSC version of the software working. I like being able to transfer game saves to my PC, even without the modchip software, though, so if the price is right at RHS, I may buy one anyways.
James @ Nov 7th 2007 11:53AM
I got a gameshark (?) USB cable back when I first got my PS2 (a year or two after launch), which lets you "bridge" your PS2 with a PC and transfer files that way. It works great 90% of the time. Sometimes, it can't see the PC on the other end, but usually rebooting the PS2 or unplugging/replugging the USB cable fixes it. I'm not sure, but you can probably get one for a hell of a lot cheaper than this thing (if all you want is to "dump" a save game).
I'm glad I did, BTW. I bought an off-brand "extender": you plug the Sony mem card into one end, and the other into the console, and you can switch between the real mem card and the "extended" memory. When the "extended" memory had a heart attack, I managed to salvage most of the save files using the USB cable, even though I couldn't read the saves from the actual games themselves. Dodged a bullet there; never going to buy an off-brand memory card again, that's for sure.

Fantastic reason to get a ps2! I really might, the DS got me hooked on homebrew.
danny @ Nov 7th 2007 9:54AM
if it's just a 32 mb memory card then why couldn't action replay card do the same thing with the special software added to it?
Greg @ Nov 7th 2007 5:43PM
If they make one for wii/gamecube, I'll be a happy panda.
unclechicken @ Dec 18th 2007 11:23PM
The new version of the hacker group mentioned above for this card has been released. Now supports Australian and NTSC (US) games.
Most people ive spoken to who have one, do say that it now works on a US PS2, as well as a PAL (UK, Europe) PS2.
This is no bullsh*t, works on MOST games, not all though.
thomsa1 @ Jan 20th 2008 3:47AM
Where can you download the software that these guys have made? ive been looking for it
