It's no secret that Alienware laptops have
long loved to pack some serious NVIDIA-based heat, and judging by screenshots (another shown after the jump) of a reported slip up earlier today, those scouting a new extraterrestrial rig might want to hold out just a tick longer. It looks as if the firm will soon be unveiling (officially, that is) the 15-inch M15x and 17-inch M17x gaming laptops, both of which will seemingly be available with the 512MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8800M GTX graphics processor. As for the
8M-series GPU, it'll boast full DirectX 10 support, the Lumenex Engine, second-generation PureVideo HD technology, a 500MHz core clock, 1,250MHz shader clock and an 800MHz memory clock. Regarding the actual lappies, all we know is that the smaller of the two will be available with a 1,440 x 900 resolution display, 2.2GHz Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB HDD, dual-layer DVD writer and Vista Home Premium. We'll be keeping an ear to the ground for something official, but don't worry, it ought not be long now.
[Thanks, Andrew]
I find it hard to believe that Alienware managed to put an 8800m in a 15.4". That'll just be too hot for a frame of that size, unless it's big thickness-wise.
If they managed to get it done, good for them, but better news would be that because Alienware doesn't make their own computers, who's the ODM that made that 15.4" with the 8800m?
I'm curious about that too; unless maybe these are something along the lines of the Asus C90 (a 15.4" laptop, but one that is fairly thick and heavy, to accommodate desktop components).
If it is actually semi-portable, that would be a pretty interesting laptop though, since as you say, these kinds of GPU's have historically been limited to 17" behemoths.
I believe and assumed it will be Arima, judging by the m9700 and m9750 which are made by Arima.
It'll work. The battery will only last for 36 seconds though. But it'll be a pretty 36 seconds.
the new model is 55nm and far more efficient than even the 8600m GT which currently dominates the 15.4" notebooks.. and who said it has to be thin aye? It could be 15.4" and 2 inches thick if they wanted it..

If your buying an Alienware for battery life, you shouldn't be. Portability is the key to Alienware's laptops. They are for people like me who use their laptops as true "desktop replacements" and have an extra power adapter on hand. I own the m9700 and I would never expect to rely on my battery, they are not for business class folks working on spreadsheets at the airport.
Why put all that hardware yet only 1GG of RAM?

So they can overcharge you to upgrade it, of course.
Is there a point to a portable gaming laptop, other than a portable heater?
I'd say that it's easier for people to lug around to LAN parties and such than a regular desktop box would be, but do people even still have LAN parties? I haven't been to one since the Counterstrike days.
Yeah I guess. My last LAN party was at a friends house last year :P. All nighters FTW!
For people like me who love gaming who get shipped overseas by work for weeks to months at a time. (and overseas compensation for one trip is usually enough for one of these puppies :-)
Will it play Oregon Trail?
Not sure it'll be much of a "laptop".
unless you're fat like me and have a very large lap
Can I get SLi 8800M GTX?
give us some crysis FPS test will ya? thats pretty much all i look for in a 8800
PC gaming "Jumped the Shark" a while ago. Consoles is where the party is at now!
You can keep saying that while I go play the best looking game of 2007.
Best looking game is Call of Duty 4 on the 360. Best multiplayer too!
I'm sorry, but Call of Duty 4 looks much better on the PC.
now we wait patiently for Clevo to response...
Damn! I was just about to buy an M9750 next week. Anybody have an idea as to when these will be released? I know Alienware has an event in New York on Friday, so maybe that's the big announcement date.
this is the final part of the Alienware Decipher contest answer i've been waiting for...:-) i had everything but the model numbers...:P
On very cold nights, I've slept with my laptop to keep warm. But with all that plastic and silicon, she wasn't a very comfortable bedmate. Har!
DOH! That was supposed to be in response to JDizzle's comment... hope the humor wasn't lost *tear*
I'm just praying to God this card will be supported in my NP9261. I guess I'd better start saving some major bucks now ('A`)
probably will but where do you except to buy one?
I'm hoping that sager offer a upgrade service.

Anyone catch the second paragraph about the 8800M GTX? Where it says "Provides the essential processing power for the ultimate Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movie experience on a PC". Does that mean it'll be the first laptop to have a dual drive? Or is it just talking in general for whatever company uses it?
It just might be time to upgrade from my m5500 to one of these.
And... battery life is how long?
believe me there's no way to play games on battery on any laptop
so who cares anyway:)
